Would be nightmare if Dortmund enter the bid. We almost always lost our top best young targets to them, as they are clearly best stepping stone clubs for turning top young talent players into real star players. They just have plenty of money to spend from Sancho sales too, of course.
You could argue that Rennes has been that stepping stone club for him. He's gotten a decent amount of experience in a Top 5 league for a few seasons, and if a big club makes a convincing offer outlining further development and path to regular starts then he doesn't need to stop at yet another stepping stone club.

(Before anyone counters with Haaland being older, he didn't play in a top 5 league, and his career will be all about breaking records, so Dortmund was a good place for him to smash in goals in a top 5 league and regular CL starts while improving.)

If he moves straight into the starting XI, then I expect his partner in midfield to be Fred. He is left-footed, and Fred is also left-footed. We should look at other options imo.
We should look at other options because they are both left footed?

Lindgard presumably thinks he can do better than West Ham, if that report is accurate. Lingard would be wrong about that.
It'd be just like him to have that one good season there then revert back to underachieving once he's moved

Shaw is left footed and so is Telles, Amad.....that's far too many. They might cause dissention within the dressing room, especially if they're left handed too

There is no world where owning Fred should stop you from getting a talented player.

I would hope that (long term) he and Fred would compete for the same spot, alongside a proper holding midfielder with decent passing ability.

I was actually thinking about having a midfield with two left footed players. It’s not ideal. Like the centre backs you’d like it split to be able to play the comfortable ball into the space with the inside of your foot on either side…

Either way Camavinga at those prices makes total sense from a squad building perspective.

Wonder if they were laughing at the transfer offer or laughing at the fact that they were contacted by GFFN

Really hope we sign him.

The fee should be very affordable given he's only got a year left on his deal. There's some talk that it's around £25m, other talk that Rennes would want more.

How Leicester managed to buy Soumare - a regular CM off the French champions - for a reported £17m I don't know. As usual they've managed to get good some good financial deals - Soumare, Daka and Bertrand for £40m is some going.

As usual, the United tag seems to push prices up. But we're negotiating better at the moment so if we can bring in Sancho, and a targeted CB (Varane?) and CM (Camavinga?) then that would be great business too.

True, we have to be careful there. Given Ole's, let's say, "conservative" tendencies *, he probably isn't keen on too many lefties.

* Being diplomatic, of course: the man's a flaming racist, sexist advocate of child hunger.

Seems a bit mental that no other teams seem to be (seriously) in for him. A few 'interested' but nothing as seemingly solid as our pursuit.

No. As you have said, Camavinga is a box-to-box player, not a holding midfielder.
I saw someone say the Camavinga actually was the holding midfielder but when they signed nzonzi that's when he started playing box to box.

We don't know that though. A couple of clubs like Bayern just do business in a clandestine manner, whereas others like Chelsea have historically swooped in at the 11th hour with a hijacked bid. We just seem to be amongst the most vocal in our transfer pursuits since we seemingly love a long, drawn out transfer saga. Though I'm hoping those days have come to an end.

Agreed but they're going to want to get a replacement in and it's not fun doing last minute shopping when no one's selling good players.
They knew he'd definitely leave mate. Imo they have already found or are looking for a replacement. It's not like he'd stay anyway.

Bouhafsi is probably one of the most trustworthy journalist out there. There are hardly any French news he has got wrong. Plus Romano is backing this
That is normally true, but Bouhafsi pretty much admitted that his source was Camavinga's agent. Could very well be the agent trying to spark a bidding war or get PSG to wake the feck up.

We dont need this guy, nor Rice nor Grealish, we just resigned Juan Mata:wenger:
We extended Mata's contract at a lower wage and all reports are that we are trying to transition him through to being a member of staff. He is undoubtedly a very good presence around the club and everyone seems to love him. So get out of here with this unrelated negative slant on things.

What do you mean ”no”?

Kimmich was converted, Lahm converted, yet an 18 year old actual midfielder who has played there is a ”no”.
Lad has some skillset, can be whatever he wants to be.
The question was "can Camavinga play as a single holding midfielder with Pogba and Bruno in front of him?" He's an 18 year old kid playing as a box-to-box midfielder at a mid-table French side - he is definitely not able to play as the sole holding midfielder in a top team with the kind of demands that would be placed upon him by having to cover defensively for both Pogba AND Bruno, singlehandedly. It is questionable whether there is a player in world football who would be capable of performing that role without the side being overrun.

In terms of the potential to convert him to a holding midfield role at some point in his career - yes, I'm sure it would be possible, but would it be desirable? His standout attribute is his ability to dribble the ball forward from midfield - seems a shame to put that to waste by having him sit deep and break up play behind two attacking midfielders, especially when there are other players who are more naturally suited to such a role.

Can Camavinga play as a single holding midfielfer with Pogba and Bruno in front of him? I dont see that as he likes to drive upwards a lot with the ball, leaving space behind him. A typical box to box. A Declan Rise is much more suited with Pogba and Bruno imo. Camavinga would play alongside Fred or Mctominay.
According to the caf, no one in the word can play that role.

His standout quality is his ability to break up oppositions attacks and start the transition with a pass or dribble. I would say that he is the most naturally suited player for a deep lying playmaker role, it would be a shame to not exploit the one thing that makes him different to most players of his age.

You are correct. Everyone refers back to FBref these days, because so much great data is freely available.

Camavinga is in the 42nd percentile among midfielders for progressive passes (ie he doesn't do many of them). He's in the 88th percentile for progressive carries, 95th percentile for completed dribbles, 88th percentile for pressures and 97th percentile for tackles.
Statistics are always flawed though. Just because a player does lots of something, it doesn't mean its a good thing. He does look more box to box than holding from what I've seen but he's so young that I think he could be moulded into a variety of roles.

I understand the reticence to agree with the question but as far as talents go and his tackling/defensive abilities I think he could possibly be told to sit and protect the back four, not out of the realms of possibility.

That said he looks absolutely nailed on as a box to box player imo.

Would be brilliant if he could mould himself into a Kante type though as they are hard as shite to come by.

Look at all this tasty noise. So many journos joining in the party now.
Would feel much more confident if the likes of Whitwell, Ducker & Stone started talking up our interest in him, until then it still feels like Rice is the preferred midfield target even though they are very different types of players

Yes
There is no world where owning Fred should stop you from getting a talented player.
We shouldn't just be looking at talented players, we should be looking at talented players that are better than our current options, and would fit into the system.

Looking at how the team is, I consider Fred our best option in center midfield, and any midfielder we are signing should be better or at least good enough to displace our other options if we aren't misplacing our priorities. If Camavinga is that player, then I expect we would try to fit him in a two with Fred, and that could be a problem because they are both left-footed.

Obviously we could make it work, but I'm sure Camavinga is not the only midfielder we are keeping tabs on, and he is not established enough for us to be making compromises.

I imagine Fred will be dropped anyway, it'll be a Camavinga/McTominay double pivot.
