Gaming PlayStation 5

Even after this deal MS are still a fair way behind Sony on gaming revenue.

Apple, Disney or Meta will acquire Sony or buy PlayStation at some point anyway I'd expect. Only deal challenge is with them being a Japanese company. Part of this move from Microsoft is no doubt pre emptive with that in mind.
Meta buying Playstation would be pretty hilarious to be fair. It'd instantly go from one of the world's most beloved and loyal brands to one of the most hated.

Apple? Maybe, but unlikely, they're not as in to big acquisitions as Microsoft.

Disney? No chance, as Revan said, Sony would be impossible for them to acquire.

Also Sony would never willingly sell the Playstation brand or section, it's easily their most profitable.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if there was a Meta and Sony(or MS) deal at some point. If they're going heavy on VR then gaming will be part of that i just wouldn't expect it to be a buyout.

This would be interesting however I’d imagine Sony would need to get its shit together given the fiasco with the PS 5 stock which is still ongoing.

Don’t think Nintendo would tolerate such amateurish production.

How are global stock shortages a Sony fiasco?

You do know it's affecting numerous electronic manufacturers.

Maybe its about leverage to get xbox game pass on sony and nintentdo machines rather than taking over the hardware market, which i dont think microsoft care that much about

So, in 2021 I played 1289 hours apparently.

288 hours on binding of isaac

278 hours on destiny 2

158 hours on tribes of midgaard

101 hours on marvel avengers

64 hours on Outriders.

Owing to isolation over Christmas I managed to get some decent time to play the PS5 in the past few weeks. Picked up a few deals on the January sales. Platinumed Ratchet and Clank, did one play through of Resident Evil Village and working through Death Loop and Guardians of the Galaxy now.

Spent way too much time on COD Cold War this past year so it was nice to get into more story driven games.

One of them (could be someone like a Tencent too) will look to acquire them I'm sure of it. Japanese element definitely adds a barrier though.

They're all gearing for metaverse and Sony would help that a lot. Pretty sure that will have been a big part of the story for Microsoft on Activision Blizzard too.

I could see Meta buying Take Two first and going from there.

They cannot. They have a higher market capitalisation (260B for Disney vs 140B for Sony), but Sony has higher revenues and higher profits, and Disney definitely does not have 200B or so to buy Sony. At best, they could do a 1.5-1 merge in favor of Disney.

On the other hand, Meta, Google, Apple, or Amazon could likely afford to buy Sony (in the case of later, funding it via Amazon shares) but I do not see Sony being interested in that for at least another few years. They totally dominated the last console war (more than double the sales of XBox) and despite that you cannot buy a PS5 cause of chip shortage, they still sold more than XBox console. I think they still have the better first-party games, and I am not sure how much long term these purchases will hurt them. For example, Fallout has gone to crap, and the last ES was in 2011, so Bethesda even going full Microsoft, won't hurt Sony too much. WoW was always a PC game so that won't hurt Sony. Call of Duty sure, but then Sony was never that big in first-person shooters (unlike Microsoft who has Halo and Gears). At the end of the day, despite the Bethesda and Activision Blizzard purchase, Microsoft Gaming will still have a lower revenue than Sony.

Saying that, obviously these purchases are putting Microsoft in a very good position to fight back after their defeat in the previous console. I still think that Sony are gonna win this console generation war, but it is going to be much closer, or probably a draw like with PS3-XBox 360.

It would also be interesting to see if Sony has any move. For example, buying SquareEnix and ensuring that FF, KH, DQ, TR and other games become exclusive. I do not expect a Sony-Nintendo merge, to be fair, totally different things.

Then there is always the possibility of a new player entering the scene (looking at Tencent).

Tencent is already the 2nd biggest in terms of gaming revenue I think?

Could see Sony going for a Konami or Square for sure.

I'm not saying an acquisition will happen immediately, itll be a while yet, but somebody like Meta would be willing to overpay by a lot for Sony if they were allowed to buy them.

I've had about 13 meetings on metaverse this year (I'm sick of it) and some are going all out. Meta aren't planning to slow down on that front and gaming is at the centre of everything they want to do. I think they'd see the vr stuff as complimentary rather than duplicate and it helps them diversify, something they've struggled with, without adding to the anti competition issues they'd face with other acquisitions that could drive similar growth.

I held the opinion when the deal happened that COD would remain on PlayStation. Don't know why, really, but I still think that will happen. And it has nothing to do with Phil Spencer coming out yesterday and saying it because I wouldn't trust that guy as far as I could throw him.

The doomsday merchants in various quarters of the internet who are proclaiming the demise of PlayStation are ridiculous though, regardless of whether COD remains on the platform or not. "It's over for PlayStation" Calm the feck down

Obviously losing COD will be a blow (the numbers tell you that) but I'm sure they'll survive. Would love for them to actually focus on a First Person multiplayer shooter now. I know others have tried to take on COD and have failed, but if ever there was a time to really go for it, it would be now.

I imagine they'll keep it multiplatform but also throw it up on gamepass Day 1 to entice people to go for their service instead. It's probably more profitable for them in the long run and they already work with Nintendo in terms of making their exclusive IPs available on other consoles (Ori and Banjo).

Either way, we're forgetting that Microsoft and Sony have had business relationships in the past. MLB The Show 21 is a Sony developed game that Microsoft paid money to put on Gamepass on release. This'll just be a reverse of the situation where Microsoft probably retain further rights to exclusive/timed DLC.

If there's one thing I'm absolutely not looking forward to in the video game industry, it's a fecking metaverse. Jesus wept.

They'll certainly put it on gamepass day 1. MLB wasn't Sony's decision right? I thought MLB themselves basically forced it through since it's their license.

On Nintendo front, there was this from Phil Spencer, where it sounded like he was saying putting exclusives on Switch created confusion and that they should step away from doing that and focus on putting on Xbox + PS. Was a bit vague and obviously Cod is in a league of it's own.

Mate.. it's not just video game industry.

There's a big car brand looking to give new car owners an NFT that unlocks the car and turns it on..

Oh, they'll definitely put it on Gamepass. That's the whole idea. "Here, you can have it on PlayStation, but you'll have to pay £60 for it while we'll have it on Gamepass on release"

The MLB one is interesting, though, because it wasn't Sony who decided to work together with Microsoft. Despite the fact that one of their internal studios made the game, the MLB itself were the ones who said we're moving to Xbox as well. Not a lot Sony could do about it.

Also, the assumption was at the time that it would kill the sales on PlayStation when Microsft announced that it would be on Gamepass, but it ended up actually doing great numbers on the PlayStation. Obviously, there are way more PlayStation consoles in the wild than Xbox's so maybe no surprise. But at the time I think the general feeling was "this is going to be bad for Sony".

Not that you can draw any comparisons between MLB and COD. Two completely different animals, of course.

Decided to hook my ps5 upto the projector, only a 1080p projectors but it looks way better than the PS4 hooked upto the projector, any reason why?

I started Little Nightmares last night. Creepy fecking game  Probably shouldn't have played it in the dark on my own.

On another note, I started replaying Horizon yesterday to get ready for Forbidden West. First time playing was on base ps4, 1080p display. Looked great then, but seeing it now on PS5 and a 4K OLED is mindblowing. What a game.

Horizon was my favourite game from last gen. Loved almost everything about it. My only complaint was combat against human enemies. It was pretty shit, but it looks like they've improved it a lot in Forbidden West. Can't wait for Forbidden West!

My favourite story in a game since Mass Effect. Game of the generation, for me. (honourable mention to Witcher 3 and GoW)

Have they announced Bloodborne 2 yet? I feel like Sony announcing that with FromSoft would spike interest.

I don’t think Sony have anything to worry about that much by Microsoft acquiring Activision Blizzard anyway. Activision are usually viewed with disdain by most ‘gamers’. Call of Duty is getting worse and worse every year and their sales are falling.

And Blizzard barely make games anymore since the original World of Warcraft launched. Are they going to entice them in playing an almost 20 year old MMO with dwindling numbers? Remakes of their old awesome games like Diablo 2? The only thing that Blizzard have in the pipeline that’s potentially exciting is Diablo 4 (see no need to make a second Overwatch game to be honest) but you just know they’ll mess it up somehow, like make it too easy, too anime looking (since D1 and D2 is gritty, gothic and dark) and have that stupid ‘must be online 24/7’ stipulation like Diablo 3.

Great post mate.

Hoping for Bloodborne 2 is a road that can only lead to disappointment, suffering and giving up on life. Not going to happen, don't even dream about it.

Its got being saved for a remake all over it bloodborne, rather then any sequel.

A properly frame-paced, 60fps version is about as far as I dare to dream, and even that is something I don't believe in.

Duke Nukem forever and The Last guardian were real, never say never

How difficult would a Bloodborne remaster really be to make? It'd be a massive money maker so i'm not really sure what would stop them.

I think it will happen i presume Bluepoint who did the Demons souls remaster will at some point give bloodborne the same treatment.
