They were hardly abusing him in fairness. Told him his performance was awful which it was yet again.

I'm sure he's fully aware he's not playing well.

Fans are allowing their anger and frustration to now spill over to abusing players to their faces. Because that's going to make everything better isn't it?

It's the owners and board who are responsible for our situation. Not Marcus Rashford. Take it out on them.

If your performances can drop THIS far due to "confidence" then you're an awful sportsman.

You can play badly. You can have a loss of confidence. You can have a patch of bad form. But this isn't that. This is a sustained, gargantuan drop off in standards from a pro athlete.

I don't buy confidence. I think he has deep personal issues (for which I'm sympathetic) but don't make yourself available until you're confident and ready

Again. They didn't abuse him to his face. I'm not saying it's cool to tell him how godawful he is at the moment but stop being so melodramatic. They told him he had a poor performance. Hardly scandalous

BECAUSE he didn't stop for autographs for fans who had been waiting with their kids (who idolise him) and he ignored them, after that performance.

Feel everyone is missing this part, guy says "after that performance, come on guys" as in the least you can do is sign some shirts etc.

So this is PR apology letter number what now? Must be more than his goals this season. At this rate he will end up with more letters than goals in his United career

He even came on a sub ffs. Granted when he came on he was awful but it seems like he's just the easy target for the anger and blame at the moment. It's so so sad to see.

That result wasn't down to Marcus Rashford but people need someone to blame.

I actually like the fact he reacted to the abuse. I'd have done the same thing.

Shove your apology that was prepared by Phil Lynch and half a dozen other cnuts up your arse.

This is damning only because of his woe is me victimhood statement. Loads of fans are dicks, but own your actions. He really has been absolutely ruined by the woman who took over his career and turned him into a caricature of a modern footballer.

Hardly any abuse from the fans, really. If anything, they are more annoyed at his behaviour of walking away from them and ignoring them rather than the performance, even though it was abysmal.

Exactly. Nothing "abusive" really. It is more of a comment of how he was behaving in front of the fans despite of their pleads. Even then, the comment hardly deserves the kind of reply he was giving the fans. That's the issue.

The mask is slipping.

Get rid whilst there’s still a possibility someone will be stupid enough to pay money for him.

Yeah I don't really care about his reaction either. You take out you take in but let's not play the victim card for him because of some 'abuse' he simply didn't get. He was emotional and angry as I'm sure he's fully aware of the fact that his performances are pure shit for more than a year now. Took it out on some fans. It's ok. I'm pretty much indiferrent about him at this point anyway.

People working on the factory floor, at McDonalds get much more bollocking on a regular basis. No one thinks about feelings being hurt.
But when it comes to footballers earning silly money, so touchy.

Talk about missing the point. Fans are people and there will be good and bad amongst them. Rashford has had more defenders than most until his form was so horrible, he's being dropped for club and soon country.

Rashford overacted to a random comment by a random fan that was only slightly critical with a weird invitation to fight. He then came out with a predictable statement trying to explain himself. Like Pogue said, it's all actually kind of sad. A fresh start in a new league might be best for all parties.

What point? I'm not missing any point. I'm calling out the mentality of these clowns who think they can treat players like verbal punching bags, then get all indignant when they receive any pushback and play the victim. Why is this guy going out of his way to heckle Rashford? He hasn't got any right to do that. Or if he does do it, he should expect pushback without getting all pissy about it. And then give it the old "how could a treat a fan like this. Someone who pays and travels to watch him?" Feck off.

And yeah, it is sad. It's sad to see an academy player who had so much promise go on a downward spiral that's he unable to arrest. It's also sad to see so many fans lob personal abuse at him that goes beyond criticizing his football.

Cant fault the PR team, those guys do good work quickly.

You've literally described an imaginary situation. Watch the video again and listen to what was said. Spoiler alert it's mild as feck. Rashford overreacted and knows it hence his PR statement/apology on twitter.

I have been criticising him for his poor performances for a long time now and I have said he obviously lacks confidence and it shows. It is very clear. But I can not see a reason to blame Marcus for what happened with this fan. Let’s not forget these players are human beings. Is marcus happy with what is happening? Of course not. Is this mentally difficult for him to handle? Of course yes. He is a human being and he reacted - it has nothing to do with ego or anything of that sort. He is frustrated (just like everyone else).

That's what those who criticize him are reduced to ? Tories  ?
That guy has been doing that every time someone criticises his precious Rashford. He has some unhealthy association with Rashford. He has no issue abusing likes Pogba or Martial.

So a fan abuses Rashford, Who then shouts something back. And everyone is crying about Rashford abusing a fan

Good. I’d rather footballers behaved like human beings. If someone shouted at me after leaving work, you best believe I’m shouting back. Actual grown adults waiting outside the stadium to shout abuse at their own players.

The what now? And does this “caricature of a modern footballer” necessarily involve campaigning on behalf of underprivileged children? Not the first thing you’d associated with modern footballers, if I’m honest.

No, I haven't. Again, I'm making a comment on the constant victimhood of fans who believe they are entitled to treat players like shit and heckle them, but then get all pissy when the players say something back. That's why, in my original comment, I was talking about the abuse they receive both on social media and at the stadium. The incident above is merely one example. What gives him the right to heckle a player, but then play the victim afterward. Same for any fan who goes out of their way to talk shit. And the guy literally makes a comment about "how could you treat a fan like this who pays to watch you", etc. So I'm not making anything up. These things happen.

It's also doubly depressing that it's happening to "one of our own", for lack of a better phrase.

I have no time for Rashford and his attitude on the pitch but I can't help but feel some of the animosity towards him stems from cynical people who have a miatrust of his charity and see his campaign as some sort of pr. People can't seem to seprate the two which is a massive mstake.
His representatives also have fault. The speed at which they come out when there's anything negative about Rashford the footballer hasnt helped him. Look at how they reacted to Ole's comment when he meant no harm?
I applaud him for his campaign but still think he's been badly managed.

People turning on his off the filed social engagements are cnuts. Shouldn't make him immune to ciritcism for his performances of course but leave that out. That's has been really really great

I wonder if Rashford is aware the constant essay PR posts are one of the things that get the fans annoyed...if I was in the United squad at the moment I'd tell my team to cool it with the social media posts until the summer.

His team are - all domestic PR agencies are aware of how apology posts come across now...but this wasn't a post to placate fans, it was a post to appease brands.

This sounds like Stan writing to Eminem

If you didn’t want to talk to me outside the stadium, you didn’t have to
But you could’ve signed an autograph for Matthew

That wasn't any abuse and don't know why people are defending him and by the looks of the video there are families and kids there waiting for them probably to get an autograph. They aren't booing or insulting them but he must have really thin skin if that comment 'after that performance' triggered him like that.

Think he needs to put as much effort on his football as he does in his social network, he acted like a jerk and needs to man up and leave all the social media drama behind.

If there's one thing fans love to do, it's to play the victim. They give football players dogs abuse, both in person and on social media, then immediately fecking cry when they dare say something back.

Verbally abuse them for weeks, give them shit throughout the game, then as soon as the player has the gumption to say something back, they're all "sir, did you see that sir? did you hear what he said to me"

Feck off.

This. Some thin skinned people in here tonight.

Meh it's all handbags. Couldn't care less about this fan stuff. Only about his disgraceful performances match after match. Won't mind him gone in the summer.

If Paxi's post is correct then Rashford also said "it's always that guy", with the fan acknowledging that he often stands in that spot yelling over to Rashford.

I would suggest that if Rashford can actually pick him out as the fan who is constantly yelling at him then he has earned that reaction over time rather than just with this one particular whinge.

This. I just hate it when pro athletes somehow say they are hurt when the average Joe gets a hell lot more bollocking up close and personal on the job than he does.

Whilst I would agree with the sentiment above that if youre going to give, you should be able to take....
What abuse was given to Rashford in the video by the person Rashford had a go at? Maybe I missed it. can you please explain?

Or are we saying its ok to group people together as one? So Steven abused Rashford so Rashford has a right to go at Derek? Or.... am i missing something?

How old are you? 12?

Yeah being childish on a player performance thread is not it right? Oh btw.... on the same page.

You're all absolute nobodies. What the hell have you all done in your lives? This lad has achieved more than any of us ever will by the age of 24.

Tories everywhere on this forum. It's so bleeding obvious.

Have you ever seen a player in injury time, in a match they are losing 0-1, at home, in a knock out CL game, receive the ball in the final third, with only a defender to beat, stop dead in their tracks, turn around and casually side foot it backwards?

(Marcus Rashford)
