Im not so sure - i think they'll definitely go for a CB. The rumours of ten Hag bringing Jurrien Timber with him are around. + Araujo
I've heard that rumour too, but it could just be that, a rumour.

Hey, I'm all for buying a new CB if a suitable one is available, but not at the expense of upgrades to the midfield or even attack.

We cannot lineup with Fred + Mctominay as our default midfield pairing next season. We just can't :p

Whether he’s being harshly treated or not, the current predicament where he’s treated as a meme footballer will be incredibly hard to come back from for him at the club.

If the rumours of him not being respected by certain camps in the dressing room are true, then I feel his time is at an end here. I can’t see how he continues at the club next season after all this, especially as captain.
I agree. It's a bit of a shame to be honest. He deserves criticism but the whole meme-ificaton of Maguire is really weird.

That does not mean they play a back 5. It is pretty clear if you watch football and Chelsea their favoured formation is a 5 back defence. If you think otherwise, thats good on you.

Clearly in a back 5 Maguire looks just as good in an England shirt.

Anyway, this is a Maguire thread not Chelsea or Rudiger. We have other areas we need to address, like maybe scoring some goals.
Never said it wasn't the preferred system did i? Doesn't mean they don't try other systems out and as your evidence suggests they play a back 4 often too - especially recently - Tuchel said himself they will use a back 4 more. So must be working out for them right? But yeah you know more than the Chelsea manager Mr Football.

Some of the Maguire fans seem to forget that our objective is to be a successful football club again. We’re not a charity for rehabilitating naff players.
AKA Manchester United fans who don't feel the need to spend hours every day sticking the knife into one of our own chronically underperforming players.

Interest is interest, it's not a legally binding contract. What you should have said is 'no top club signed him' instead of saying 'no top club showed interest'. You are aware those are two very different things right?signing and interest?
If you're quoting someone you do it when they actually use those words. You can't just slap speech marks around words and pretend that's what was said.

I didn't say nobody showed interest. I've made that clear a few times now. Because interest can mean anything. Scouting a player, like I assume we're doing all the time, means taking an interest.

I said no top clubs were after him, as evidenced by no top clubs signing him.

I suggest the reason no top club signed him from Celtic comes back to my point. CB's can be made to look very good or average by the team around them. You expose any CB over and over and he'll struggle.

Those aren't speech marks.

i'd say being after a player is showing interest - doesn't mean you get them of course. In any case, a big club did get him for he was doing at a smaller club with inferior players around him.

I think a good CB has to have certain traits players like Rio/VVD has these pretty early into their careers regardless of the players around them.

If Maguire's as terrible as you make him out to be, how do explain him being named in the Euro's team of the tournament last summer?

Depends which outlet you're going by - the ones i've seen didn't have him in. I think Bonnuci, and Chellini were far better.

The official one didn't even include Luke Shaw who i thought was England's best player - so i wouldn't use that as any sort of barometer.

Going to be a bit funny seeing the meltdown here when Maguire remains captain and is still a starter every game when Ten Hag takes over. Like I don't think he should be captain but he has enough about his game along with constant availability and is good on the ball that means that he'll be in with there being bigger issues to handle for a few years yet, and a coach will just try to improve him if needed

The standard is, to improve a team you replace your worse players, not your best. As of right now Maguire is our best centre half. Verane should be but with all his injuries he hasn't been able to prove it. But for arguments sake, let's assume Verane is indeed our best. Maguire is our second best by a long margin. So in order to improve the team (improving the team is much more important than feeding ones agenda) you have to first get a player to replace your worst. So out goes Jones and in comes "player x". If he happens to be better than Maguire, then Maguire moves to 3rd in the rotation (again, assuming Verane can stay fit long enough to prove he's the best). Then if we get another defender it's to replace Bailly (again, not to feed your agenda, but to improve the team). Again, if this new player is better than Maguire, then Maguire moves to 4th. Then you get another to replace Lindelof and so on.
Maguire is not better than Varane for 1. Secondly to improve you need to replace 1 of the starting 11.
So Maguire needs to be replaced in the 11. Its quite simple.

Indeed. They'll know better than Ten Hag though.

If what you got out of my post is that you think I said Maguire is better than Verane then there is no point in even talking to you as you obviously struggle with the English language

lets see how he adapts to playing in ETH's system. it's a danger playing a high line with his lack of pace but if he's allowed to be aggressive and look to break things up before they develop it might suit him better then trying to back off and defend.

You’re words above. In reply to me saying Maguire can be moved to the bench if he is happy with that and should be replaced. We need to improve the 11 not add depth. And Varane doesn’t need to prove a thing, you do not base those decisions on one season (in which he has been better than Maguire anyway)

All of our defenders are better than Harry.

Just as silly as stating Maguire is our best cb. In what way is he better than Varane? Who has won everything.
He can get himself on the pitch?

Surely a player fit every week is more useful than a guy missing half the time.

You are worse than the British media. You totally left out the rest of my comment. Do you work for Sky?

He won't adapt to anything he just simply isn't good enough for a big team like this. He was fine at Leicester but even there I saw some of their fans saying Evans outshined him in many games. The guy was just a hugely expensive mistake and you can bump this post at the end of next season if I was wrong but truth is I won't be, he's a massive liability.

Just ignore these silly little facts that go against your agenda
So you are saying just because he was on that list the people criticizing him has an agenda? He's the most expensive centre half in history and is rightly getting critique because the majority of his time here has been absolute dross.

What I'm saying is that this was a direct reply to someone who said Harry Maguire has been shocking for 18 months. If that's the case, then how did this happen?

That's because people are discussing united based performances in here bringing England to it is not really relevant, he has also been shocking at times there too.

Manchester Utd never lose, just run out of time
While Sadler is obviously incredibly biased towards Maguire, he has somewhat of a point here. Maguire was arguably one of the best central defenders in Europe in the second half of last season (including but not limited to the Euro's). So anybody saying that he's been shocking for 18 months is getting a bit ridiculous.

Of course, that half a season is the only time in his entire career he's been remotely close to that level. If we take the last two seasons in total he HAS been absolutely terrible (the first few months of last season and the first half of this one) for longer than he has been good (the second half of last season), and the few months that aren't included in those periods he was just average.

Yeah I think Maguire was quite good last season and at the Euros too (or generally for England). But having read about ETHs tactical preferences and desire for defenders to be aggressive and also have the ability to deal with difficult situations (2 v 3 or whatever), I worry about both Maguire and Lindelof for their lack of pace /mobility and physicality/ball winning respectively. Varane should suit it fine, but he's often not fit.
