Would you sell Rashford?

I've always felt he was not good enough for a team looking to win major titles. I'm more convinced now than ever.
Yeah I’m not convinced of that at all. Mainly because I don’t believe in having a first XI. I believe in having a strong squad. Naturally players emerge that, through form, almost demand to be considered first choice, but really success comes from having options and competition for places. In that way, I think Rashford has a potentially important role to play as one of 5-6 forwards competing for 3-4 spots.

Came across this post on Facebook but it sums up my thoughts succinctly.

Shame on anyone who truly thinks our club would be better off without Marcus.
Basically it's all about reputation. Martial had the same record a year back but wasn't deemed untouchable due to the lofty home grown status. I wouldn't sell Rashford yet, I'd give him next season. But it's clear why he should be on the edge - his performances have even consistently rubbish

We’ll be winning nowt so long as Rashford is capable of competing with the rest of our attacking options. It really amazes me how low standards have become.

By the end of next season, he's technically a free agent. Club has an option to extend a further year until 23/24. If he's not a bang on starter, why should he be given new terms at similar or greater wages? If he's a squad player with the potential to rotate into the starting XI, but not a bona fide starting XI, then he shouldn't be paid like one and embrace his role.
Yeh. Keep seeing this point is easily ignored by some. "wait until the end of next season" is reasonable, but people need to address that 1 year contract left issue. It's easier to play dumb about it though.

What doesn’t surprise me is how fickle and myopic much of our fan base is.

I wouldn’t give up on rashford just yet. I’d give him another season and see if the new manager can get him to re discover his form. A fit and firing rashford is lethal. Plus if we sold him we would need to sign like another 3 forwards, martial and lingard Will be gone. Maybe Ronaldo.

Acknowledging that a player isn't very good after God knows how long of performing terribly isn't fickle, it's accepting the reality of the situation instead of basing an opinion on sentimentality or some fanciful notion that he'll magically become world class because he's a local lad from the academy.

Maybe if we had more "fickle" fans we wouldn't have been stuck with Solskjaer for 3 years, or Lingard for 6 years, or countless other petsonnel who we continued to cheer and support for years despite not being of a high enough standard for this club.

He won't be sold this summer that's for sure, but last year wasn't great, and this year is awful, and if he can't bounce next season then he's done. Still, we need to be a bit more ruthless. Players lose form for few months, but we're fine when it happens for years here.

If there's a world where we're interested in Kane in the summer, I wouldn't be surprised if levy asks for Rashford.

Your fickleness is disappointing. We need to focus on what matters: his GQ man of the year nomination and his Twitter follower numbers

It’s what Roy Keane would want us to do

Awful ball control, head is always down, can't complete simple passes, can't head the ball, can't cross, can't hold up the ball, can't link up play, moves usually break down once he touches the ball, can't dribble, I'm trying to remember the last time he actually went past someone, his kick and rush style of play has been totally figured out, can't shoot accurately yet he always wants to shoot from impossible angles thereby breaking down every promising move by the team, he has little to no technical ability and has no tactical nous or awareness, has been horrible for nearly two years now and the press act like his poor form only just began, I have never seen a player that fans readily have an excuse for, such as he looks injured and he can't be bothered, or the injuries have slowed him down.
Just call it for what he is he is totally out of his depth on a team that wants to challenge for the premier league or Champions league. Everytime he's on the pitch, it feels like we are a man down, thats how disillusioned I have become with him.

It was exciting when he was coming through the ranks and I genuinely believed he would become world class to a certain extent, I was hoping for an Mbappe type player, but the level of difference in technical ability between the two is ridiculous and I just believe that Rashford does not have the ability to play for the likes of a Liverpool or City as well as the Reals and Barcas of this world, he can't play in Italy because every game is tactical and defensive and I doubt Bayern will ever want a player like him. So my question is if he is not good enough for any of these teams why should he be good enough for us and I also wonder, if he was ever on the market, what type of team will show an interest.
I also never believed the rumours that Barcelona were ever after him.

Rashford has always been class to me.

But he so far off the pace at the moment I'm worried for him. Hopefully he can finish strong for the season but he doesn't look to be enjoying himself. I suspect that mostly down to himself and he frustrated with his own performances. Confidence will be massive for him

He will play better after leaving United. Relies too much on his academy status and influence to get by with shit performances and by moving away from the club he will have no choice but to graft and make a name for himself on the pitch again.

At any proper well run big club he would be on the market and certainly in Fergie era.

Jesus, that was hard to read.. Rashford can't dribble, shoot or cross .. ok.

He's appallingly out of form but it's far too early to write him off. Especially given our current status and situation. It's not like we're challenging for the league or CL.
I for one am hopeful he will rediscover his form once the situation at the club settles, hopefully under ETH next season.

I loved the type of form he was on prior to his injury.

Whether he could ever get back to that is pure guess work.

No way will we sell him. He is dreadfully out of form, but he has demonstrated his evident talent in the past. And given the turnover that is coming through the rest of the squad (aged legs and expiring contracts) we're not going to add another empty peg that needs to be filled.

I wouldn't sell him because we need a squad to challenge on all fronts but as a first team weekly starter he might never be good enough. Whatever position he fills will always have a way of feeling in need of reinforcements. RR said we needed a young striker meanwhile Rashford is still at the club. It's not a slight, his skillset is just really really incomplete. He doesn't really have the qualities of a modern lone striker. He's off form but his linkup isn't actually much different from what it has always been. It's now very obvious because he's no longer splitting the brunt of the criticism with Greenwood and Martial and we're now a quick passing team so there are no zombie tactics to blame for terrible decisions.

A big NO. Throwing around like a potato under Ole and Ralf. No specializing. A big good as LW, a bit good as RW and sometime as a CF. Throwing around like a potato. Full focus on one spot and what he is best with.

Rashford like Vardy = Super explosive and fast. The different is Vardy has always play as a CF. With a world class ballwinner behind Vardy + a super and world class service in Mahrez or current Leicester players. More than only Mahrez and one player now. Vardy have Maddison, Barnes and Tielemans to feed him now. Compare to Mahrez and Albrighton.

Get Raphinha. Playing ahead of this service = Raphinha - Bruno - Sancho = Rashford would score 20 goals + each season in the future. No penalties inlcude. I can promise garantue. Special if you get a world class nr.8 behind those 3 too like this.

Raphinha - Bellingham - McTom - Sancho + Bruno + Rashford. The 6 combination line up. Still 2 pieces, puzzles and reasons are missing to have a consistent of creating and scoring many goals that will lead to big chance to win the a football match.

Rashford has shown that he can be clinical as a CF. Had a really good run before that back injury. After that throwing around like a potato.

He’s a wide forwards who prefers the left but sometimes is asked to play on the right. That shouldn’t be an insurmountable obstacle to a half decent footballer that excuses two years of playing like he’s had his shoes tied together and been forced to wear a blindfold.

The normalisation of ‘of course he looks like shit, walking around the field like Eric Cantona with an erection, he’s playing from his non-preferred side’ whilst also pretending he’s a top player has been an incredible achievement

Aside from anything else his resilience and versatility even by the standards of his most vocal apologists is non existent. Yet they still won’t admit he isn’t close to a top player

They talk about him like some precocious flower that blooms once every 7 months only if a very particular set of circumstances have culminated at same time. Brilliant if playing in a certain system in an exact position, against a particular type of defensive line playing a specific type of football if he’s not distracted by off field issues, hasn’t had row with his gf in last few weeks, is several months clear of his latest injury, if the wind is coming from a south-westerly direction and he’s having pork chops that night

There were some on here claiming that Rashford was already better than Giggs and would have a better career (or something like that).

I don’t know what those people think now but Rashford seems to have a pretty steep fall from grace.

I would say try to remember the very exciting performances he was capable of and root for him to get back to that form (which was, incidentally, nowhere close to Giggs).

I'd like to hear what this talent of Rashford is that people speak of. I am not talking about running mind, especially mindlessly into opposition players.

The guy was always an instinctive pace and power merchant with questionable decision-making and technical skills.

Now he's lost his pace and supposed passion and he's got nothing. All this talent talk reminds me of the made-up good performances of Maguire and our supposed great results under OGS. It's in some people's heads but certainly not reflected in reality.

Gosh. This post reminds me of people who think Beckham never did much and would be nothing without his right leg.

Exactly what I'm talking about. What's Rashford's skillset beyond running in behind?

There was a lengthy period where he was a good finisher and showed plenty of skill dribbling and beating players. I still hope he can reproduce that and build on it; seems like a better outlook than hoping he won’t.

He’s been off it for a couple of years but some people look at Rooney’s last couple of years and say he was overrated. Rashford’s recent poor form doesn’t mean he was never any good - he was our most effective forward for a while and I think it’s a bit soon to condemn him.

To me, it was always potential even when he was getting the numbers.

He always had a way to go to that top, top level at which he's already pay-wise.

His heading ability is also absolutely awful and has not improved one bit since his first game for us.

All in all, his trajectory is firmly in the Welbeck category, in my opinion. If even Southgate has given up on you, you know you're not doing well.

He benefited from people massively overrating him. You only had to watch him at his peak to see he was still absolutely miles off being a top quality footballer. He was scoring goals, he was getting assists but he still had miles to go. And there’s nothing wrong with that. You’d expect a 19/20 year old to still develop and be behind most of the team, but even then some wouldn’t have it that he was anything other than a top class talent. It was ridiculous. You just had to open your eyes to see he was a player in need of development who looked promising. He was never “brilliant” or “top class”

Yeah he’s definitely overpaid. If he starts getting the numbers again, that’s the important thing. He may never of course.

Agreed 100%.
Why are standards so low?
And why are so many fans attached to losers like Rashford? He has been garbage for about 2 years now and weirdly, it is quite possible that his best years are behind him.
We need to get rid of anyone not willing to pull their weight or are lacking the requisite skill level.
If he isn't good enough for LFC or MCFC, then get him out, quick.

You cannot compare Rooney to Rashford.
Rooney performed at the highest level for over a decade. He abused his body and as a result, he fell off a cliff. When he did, fans wanted him out and Jose arrived and duly obliged.
Rashford played well for about 2 seasons....that's it. He has been terrible for the last 2 years and given that we are attempting to climb to 1st place in the league, we simply can't afford to carry any passengers. This may sound cruel, but MUFC is not a charity or a holiday camp. The new manager has to be ruthless, in the same way that Guardiola was when he first arrived at MCFC

Next season is a big season for him. He’s shown he has everything it takes to thrive in the modern game but he’s been appalling this season. He’s a player I’d like to see under ETH. If he’s crap again next year then he’d become a player I’d be willing to jettison. We’ve been a shambles all round this season. I refuse to believe half the players are as bad as they are showing right now. His attitude though has been naff, and that’s an insult to the fans. But you can accuse many of that too. We don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes and a fresh start next season would benefit everyone. Beyond that, there’s nowhere left to hide.

Which is why we'd be morons to offer him a new contract. It should be the 1 year extension at most, and then decide to keep / sell next summer.

Ar rhe same time if he's got a bad attitude and that's evident right now we may as well let go now. Can't be carrying that into the new regime. Hopefully this isn't the case and he wants to work hard and fight for his place.

Unless ETH has some incredible plans for him, if someone offered round about the 85 mil mark or above, we should let him go.

We are the WORST at moving on players when we should, and we only try to ship them out when they're done and no one see any value in them anymore. At this point, we know Rashford's ceiling, and there is a certain amount of positional greyness that has become signature to this team. Barring a rare season with him and Martial both finding an extra gear, his numbers aren't exactly remarkable (I'm going to keep his England record aside, because it doesn't count for jack in anything that we do). His last operation also seems to have affected his pace, which limits him as a footballer. His sale could help us rebuild with far more balance. Whether we like it or not, pretending we're a 'feeder' club with our existing crop of stars is exactly what will enable us to turn this situation around.

No I’d keep him for at least another season, he’s shown us how good he can be in previous seasons, he had a spell under ole where he was flying. Under ten Hag I have no doubt he’ll get back to his best just like halve of the squad, they deserve to have some proper coaching and a clear structure and style of play. If we had the city team right now I don’t think we’d be any better… it’s all about the structure and style of play that is set by the club and manager/coaches. It will be interesting where ten Hag plays him though if he stays, he’s awful on the right, he plays his best football on the left so we need to try and find a way of getting sancho to play on the right like he did for Dortmund. At the minute we’re so predictable, most of our play goes down the left side, we bought sancho for that exact reason so we can switch it up a bit and become unpredictable.

I know people will say Rashy & Martial are not out & out strikers like Haaland is but is that good thing? Having 2 "forwards" who think scoring 15 PL goals per season is an achievement whilst Salah & Kane seem to score 20+ PL goals every season for the past 6 years.

Rashy has reached his ceiling at UTD, time to sell me thinks.

They say form is temporary & class is permanent but with Rashy his bad form has been going on for a long time now (just like Martial), yeah, I know he has had his injuries in that time but I seriously can't recall the last time he put in a top class performance for UTD or England for that matter.

Rashford has never ever, been close to show the consistancy and drive Beckham and Rooney did.

Rashford should not be compared to these players.

We're in a bit of a no-win scenario of our own making. If which is likely we're wanting to give him another year under the new manager then he's entering the final year of his contract and any value he currently has is likely extinguished with another poor season under his belt and one year left on his contract. Likewise if we're offering him a new contract it's going to be in the region of £60m over 5 years, which most would agree would be grossly overpaid and of better use elsewhere.

If his salary were around half what it is then it would be a simple decision to extend his deal and give him another year. However with his absurd contract the best option in my view is to sell whilst he firstly has enough time on his contract to maximise his value and secondly whilst there is still the view in many quarters that he's in a temporary dip of form.

This Summer with Rashford is very similar to Pogba in January 2020 where we could have recovered most of the fee we'd paid for him and saved tens of millions in wages, a decision that cost in the region of £100m for very little benefit. I fear we'll make the same error again.

He was a limited dribbler. He just ran fast.
