Martial is the player I have the least expectation from to improve under the new coaches. The talent was there, probably still is, but his attitude has been terrible, it's not him alone obviously, but he just needs too many things to be perfect for him to perform at a high level on a consistent basis. Besides, it doesn't seem like he's improved at anything since his breakthrough, teams learn to handle the dribbling very soon, you have to be an exceptional dribbler to keep going past people on a consistent basis. His finishing is very one dimensional, his off the ball movement has become worse, he barely makes any runs and wants the ball to be played at his feet all the time, never looks like he has a plan after receiving the ball, it's always receive the ball and then think what to do. Oddly enough, his 2nd touch is terrible, his first touch is good, that shows his natural talent, his 2nd touch is dictated by his decision making, the number of times he loses the ball with his 2nd or 3rd touch makes me scream at the screen .

There's a lot wrong with his overall game and attitude to do well under any manager.

Feck me, we've really fecked up our wage structure. Are all our players going to run down their contracts?

May as well just accept him as a decent option from bench- nobody will buy him. Can come in at lw or cf but unless he has a personality transplant he shouldn't be starting. Who knows maybe he'll benefit from Ten Hag though im not optimistic

It looks like that.
And we will probably hand some ridiculous money to FDJ.We never learn.

As someone else's said yesterday, it's not a wage structure issue. Martial was extended on the back of a great season and as a starter, the issue is that he failed to sustain that level of output. If Martial sustained his level of performances there would be no talk about his wage. This happens to all clubs and at all level of expectations within clubs.

Maybe he'll get the finger out because it's a World Cup year. United should sell him if that's the case though, because he will return to a nothing player next season.

Was he though? He signed his new contract in January 19. He’d scored 11 goals the season before. I wouldn’t call it a great season. We rushed to give him a contract nobody else would.

I wonder how many people here who don't rate Martial because of his attitude were in fact keen on getting Dembele in this summer?
Martial and Dembélé are different. A simple example is that Martial has always needed to pushed by his coaches on the training ground while Dembélé has generally been praised for his abilities and intensity on the training ground. One thing that I wonder about Martial and Ole is how much Ole tried to push him and gave him a bit of tough love because from what I understand and what Martial said about Jardim and LVG is that he likes being pushed because he needs it. Dembélé just needs a watch and probably someone cleaning his house.

Does either of Martian or Dembele have a good attitude? If so which one?

Yeah I get that, and typically I would agree about attitude on the training ground.

I guess the commitment I was comparing to is what we see on the pitch, and the lack of effort we have seen from both in seasons gone by. Take Rashford, he was highly praised for his training efforts last season, but we saw nothing of the like in a game.

I don't know, what do you mean by good attitude?
Professionalism, optimism/showing hunger, fighting for a place, being a team player in the dressing room, being humble, having the right priorities etc.

Tbf, he played well under Ole in his first season. Was his best one at the club.

He lost form in his second season, and then couldn't make it back into the team after that because of Cavani and eventually Ronaldo. It's more the case he needs game time and his fitness has become a bigger issue in recent years which is why his loan at Seville didn't work out

I hope the Sevilla experience knocked some humility into him but I doubt he has the self awareness for that.

The effort part is interesting to me because people perception of effort doesn't match reality for example, would you say that Mané lacks effort? He presses and tackles as much as the likes of Neymar or Dembélé but the latter are considered law effort players which is wrong but still a popular opinion. If anything the two maligned players put more effort simply because they provide a lot more carries.

The lad still clearly has talent he just can't be arsed! If ETH sees him not putting a shift in I fully expect him to be out before the window closes albeit probably on loan where we'll have to pay most of his wages

100% agree with bolded part. He's been a player that need an arm around the shoulder who gave him a good run and believed he can do well. His issue has been keeping fit, and the last time he did was the season that he, Rashford and Greenwood were firing on all cylinders together.

Yes it was, it's 11 goals in around half the minutes played by a starter. He then follows it with 8 PL goals in the first half of the season including. As lmuch as people want to forget it Martial was excellent between 2017 and 2020, he has been shoddy after that but his contract makes sense when you consider where he was at the time.

That was the Mourinho season, was he even a starter? He was competing with Rashford for the left wing spot wasnt he? 11 goals from the left wing with the season not yet ended is not bad. The year after he was actually really good as a striker. No idea what happend to him after that season, lost form and never found it back.

He doesn't. I genuinely don't get this idea, Martial did well under Jardim, LVG and Mourinho(after being benched). It's a player that you cannot cuddle, you keep him under pressure but remain fair otherwise he reduces his focus and intensity.

Martial and Rashford rotated on left wing position playing around 50% mins, for the mins they played their goals and assists numbers was good.

Good question, and the perception can differ from person to person for sure.

For me, it's simply how much they give across the 90 minutes in their position and whats typically expected. Are they pressing more than their teammates? Tracking back regularly? In CM, are they looking to drive the ball forward or just spend their time passing back and forth?

I look at Rashford pre vs post surgery, and the effort levels are night and day. He's a good example in my eyes who used to make the effort, but last season didn't at all. Linking that to attitude problems is another matter

He wasn’t excellent for three years. His record the season before his contract was a goal in just over every two games. It’s good, I don’t agree that is great and don’t believe it was worthy of the size of contract he got. Particularly when we already had plenty of evidence of him throwing his toys out of the pram. Clearly people at United hoped it was just because of Mourinho. It clearly wasn’t.

We did the same with Shaw, hand him a big pay rise of the back of one good season and give him a contract no other club would dream of.

Martial was poor last 2 seasons but it's amazing how his before career is written off or clubbed with shit seasons and how many myths are taken as gospel.

He is called mentally weak player when him, Pogba, Shaw were the ones who carried us when Jose downed tools in 2018-19 season, apparently he lacks fight or will to fight for his position. He competed with Rashford for LW position, Martial started from bench and with his performance he became first choice winger. Somehow Jose thought it was good decision to move him to RW to play Sanchez who was just dog shit.

That's the problem with how all the players are assessed, their poor seasons are clubbed with their good ones and apparently these players never played well or had good seasons.

Rashford has always been poor at tracking back, even pre-injury.

I'd rather he was just ostracized. We know as a matter of fact that he isn't willing to put the hard yards in.

It’s a decent season, maybe can be considered good but it’s not a great season. It should not have led to the contract he was given. That contact is the sole reason he is still here. No club in the world will pay him that.

You don't think that a goal every two games for a winger(he wasn't used as an inside forward) is excellent? How many wingers are above that?

I'd honestly rather just loan him to a club willing to pay around 50% of his wages.

There must be clubs looking for a squad player????

Basically, just get rid of him.

The wording in one of them tweets is hilarious. “Manchester United are braced for the prospect of Martial still being at the club next season”

sheesh. My guy really fell off

Martial FC must be in the dirt over the whole of football failing to see what they see.
The Martial FC again... Martial had a very good 19/20 season. 17 goals, 11 assists while not the focus of the attack (since Rashford had most of the spotlights on him). Martial was also very important in the attack play by holding up the ball and not losing the ball the moment it was played towards him.

He was shit in the 20/21 season but from what he did show during the 19/20 season i dont think it was unreasonable to give him the benefit of the doubt and hoping/wanting to see him get back to his old form. A lot never liked Martial and wanted him dropped and sold the moment his form went away (some even wanted him out during his good period because -reasons-) and started to call everyone not agreeing with that point of view Martial FC. In my opinion he earned some credit from the 19/20 season, credit he used during the 20/21 season. He still wasnt good during 21/22 either so now im fine with getting rid of him.

Too bad though, that whole future Rashford/Martial/Greenwood forward line went to shit when it looked like it could be a very good forward line for years to come.

Per Transfermarkt he scored 5 of his 11 goals while playing up front. That means he scored 6 in 28 appearances from the left. I’m not sure what your definition of winger is but where Martial played wouldn’t fit mine. He doesn’t hug the touchline and whip crosses in and his whole game was based on cutting inside. I wouldn’t consider that excellent. I also don’t think any other club would’ve payed him £250k a week for it.
