Heh. That's a funny paywall - just open the page, right-click, then "Print" and save as pdf.

But damn, Lisandro Martinez is a pretty fearless and direct character.

"Martinez had to do his bit too, pressing his insistence on leaving for a suitable offer — as had been promised by Marc Overmars before his departure as Ajax sporting director. According to De Telegraaf, Martinez unleashed on Ajax’s new technical director Gerry Hamstra, who was blocking the transfer. “You’re a fecking nobody,” Martinez was reported as saying. “You’re only here because Marc Overmars had to go.” Martinez moved two days later."

I like Martinez. He might be small but he is rock hard.

I wonder if our transfer window would have been much different if they'd given ETH that budget from the start?

With so many holes in the squad and under performers, you have to wonder what, or how the owners/upper management thought how far a £120m budget was going to take us in the current market conditions (& prices).

Basically nothing changed this year.

Atleast things are improving. Something to look forward to.

We should be thankful to Brentford else Casemiro and Antony isn't happening .

It’s all well and good, but we don’t have a magic money tree and the Glazers will still take money out instead of putting it in, so clearly there will be lasting effects on our budgets for the next few summers as a result of this. And our squad is still far from perfect.

So this board seriously thought they can ride it out with these players under a new manager and qualify for Champions League even after a shitshow of last season?

It's a good thing we lost those two matches to show how trash some of our players are. This board is hopeless. Always so reactionary. Pretty sure there would be no Casemiro or Antony if we'd not lost those two matches. Rabiot and Arnautovic were our targets before those two.

*IF* the signings work out, we might just need a few signings per summer anyways.

Wont happen though. We ain't that lucky.

£120m was never going to be enough, even with the extra 100m we spent we are still short in a few areas. Rather than trying to blame ten hag for spending a lot, why dont they take a look at themselves for letting the first team get in such a bad state by employing the wrong managers and allowing a useless CEO for the past 9years run the football side of the club.

Good article, and Laurie Whitwell always seems to have his finger on the pulse regarding the internal affairs at United.

Difficult to know how to feel regarding the clubs summer. On the one hand we got some well needed reinforcements through the door. Casemiro looks great on the ball and will bring some steel and composure to the midfield, Antony seems very exciting and hopefully has the strong mentality where he won't be fazed by the price tag and the undoubted media scrutiny that will bring, Martinez and Malacia look like great purchases albeit early in the season, and we all know what Eriksen will bring.

On the other hand though, you can't help but feel anxious about whether the club are going to be able to make the renovations to the stadium, the training ground and the continued investment in the squad while the Glazers are still sucking the life and money out of the club. The extensive questionnaire that the club sent out to all of us season holders was eye-opening in that they know how outdated the stadium is, and with the current level of debt and unwillingness of the owners to invest any of their own funds into the club it seems unlikely that we will see any significant improvements to the current infrastructure any time soon. You can only hope the current whispers regarding them looking to sell are true and a concrete offer comes from a suitable buyer soon (i.e Ratcliffe).

I quite liked this part

Simmering anxiety among supporters exploded into fury when United’s approach for Marko Arnautovic emerged hours before kick-off on the opening game of the season against Brighton & Hove Albion. Defeat poured petrol on emotions.

Having worked with Arnautovic at FC Twente, Ten Hag identified a streak in the striker he wished to add to his dressing room. The term “nasty bastard” was mentioned, in a complimentary way.

So much of the article feels like that. Some facts thrown in but hard to know how much is true. This almost reads like a summary of football industry gossip abt united transfer activity.

But no one can convince me Casemiro was on our shortlist. And that this wasn't all reactionary.

depends what you think is reactionary about it…

it’s clear to everyone and their dogs we desperately needed a defensive midfielder, and we went and bought one of the best in the world over the last few years in that position.

Not Sure that is reactionary to me… maybe more indicative of a scouting department that spends most of its time playing FIFA.

Very simple. If we didn't lose to Brighton and Brentford, and had maybe even won against them, do you think we would have spent that much on Casemiro, despite the obvious bolded part.

I don't think so. Hence buying Casemiro was a reaction to those defeats.

So you don’t think EtH wanted a defensive midfielder prior to that?

Just because EtH wanted, everyone knew we needed, and it was obvious we needed 2 CM, doesn't mean the plan was to get Casemiro. I mean we almost got Rabiot no? That was going to be his midfielder. So what changed? The defeats.

If Casemiro was the plan all along, why didn't we sign him earlier?

I think it is unfair to lump Murtough with those who wanted minimal spending. That decision came from the Glazers.

It's clear the pressure made the Glazers open up the pursestrings.

Finally they're 100% backing the manager and that will 'pay dividends' (ironic) come the end of the season.

Frenkie decided to stay. We could only afford one of them.

We were in contact with Casemiro much earlier than people seem to realise.

It would have been Rabiot plus another.
