I am trying to figure out what is your definition of decent? And you describe his as decent is every aspect if he is played in midfield and with a partner who can cover for him? Cover what? His inconsistent passing and ball control? His diabolic defensive play? Or attacking input? I agree about one thing, yes he is decent in chasing after people and winning the occasional ball, but is that enough in order for him to play that role? I don't think so, not with his inconsistent touch, passing and awful tendency to shoot at every semi occasion to a shocking standard.

With the 5 sub role, it even makes it easier, I'd play Eriksen, DVB actually even McT since I think he can be more useful like he demonstrated last night. Ultimately we need another CM.
Fred does the CM role effectively, similar way to Tielemans let's say. He's not that good technically, but has better work ethic and energy levels, so it kind of evens out.
By "cover" I mean he can't play the deepest midfielder role, he has to have some support. It's quite easy actually. He does play that role for Brazil effectively so it's even easier to see what he brings there, hopefully we will see that soon with Casemiro joining. I also think he is useful in keeping the ball in opposition half, recycling possession and progressing the ball forward. I do think those are his strengths rather than making him play deep.

Fred is not even close to being great midfielder, but he's also a victim of being forced to do two man job more often than not. Fair enough if you think he's thrash, just keep that in mind. Many midfielders better than Fred would look out of depth in United team.

Yeah I thought we could get away with playing Eriksen at DLP for a season but he looked very leggy yesterday. Ceded control quite a few times because he couldn't do your basic CM sprint to cover wide and then get back in position as soon as the ball rotates.

I wonder if it's possible to cover for him by bringing Bruno a little deeper but as it is right now, we have a Pogba, Fred, Bruno midfield again
Pogba had no defensive awareness and no discipline to track back. Eriksen seems to have those, he's just not athletic enough (or maybe not fit yet?), so those are different issues to last season. I think Eriksen will be easier to accommodate in midfield than Pogba, I just don't see a point to it since that's not where he's most effective. Why can't we just play two defensive minded players in midfield and have the front 4 plus fullbacks do the damage? Everybody else does that, it's just we at United seem to have obsession playing AMs in midfield.

Nice cameo yesterday. Came on, got in their face, and even at times, was calm to keep the ball (like on the wing near the end). Ran out the time well.

It seems that Erik has decided that Fred is not an option as the more defensive CM with McTominay being preferred. Fred will be Eriksen's back-up going forward it looks like.

Fred will still get a decent amount of games. Eriksen's not a 90 minute player. He looks knackered after 60. I'm surprised it's taken ETH so long to sub him in the last two games. When Eriksen gets a break, Fred will play.

Love that he’s a squad player now, it’s what he should’ve been for years.
perfect player to come in when the opposition is tired, and he gets pressed less.

I thought that was a really good cameo, his pressing higher up the pitch is immense.

People were taking the piss about McFred still playing together after we signed Casemiro, but those two in front of Casemiro is so, so much better than just the two of them as a pivot, and it's a very good midfield for defending a lead.

Manchester Utd never lose, just run out of time
Came on and immediately won the ball back three times in a couple of minutes, launching dangerous counter-attacks each time. Then another few times as the match wore on.

Shame the pass to Ronaldo was over-hit, but otherwise a very good cameo.

This is his role now with Casemiro and McTominay actually playing usefully. Higher up the pitch, energy, pressing. It's what he has always been good at but he got asked with playing unsuitable roles because we had no choice.

Also, he's pretty quick at times, isn't he? Sneaky pace.

Great performance coming off the bench, all of a sudden it looks like we have some cracking midfield options!

Really good cameo from him. Was surprised when he came on instead of Casemiro - but he did really well when he was on

Looking over my shoulder.

He is quick. There’s a myth on this forum that he is slow, which is pure BS. In terms of being a CM, he’s actually very quick. Reminds me of the timw when the Caf said Smalling was slow…

good cameo!

Very good performance apart from his attempted through-ball to Ronaldo, which should have been better.

I think we've seen it intermittently where we get into these sorts of games where there is space to break into and carry the ball, Fred can be really effective in the transitions. We also saw it under Ralf.

Taking the ball on the edge of his own box and thinking he's going to ping it around all game like a metronome - it's not him and we've had to shoehorn him into that. He's a box to box player with energy and work rate, and can carry the ball. Use him how Brazil do and he will be effective this season.

So many complained but he changed the game a bit with his energy and press. Well done!

Fred should come in early in the second half just to harass and win the ball further giving good counter attacks. Especially with how badly we play in second half and got push back most of the time for now.

He is a machine when pressing. Doesn't let the opposition players get away, particularly in the opposition half.

Yeah this is the best Fred we can have, higher up the pitch, chasing ball and starting counters early. I was never in any doubt he will be very useful, just need to stop making DM out of him.

Useful player to bring on when seeing out a lead but lack of quality was obvious with that Ronaldo pass

He was alright. Brought on some running and energy which we all know are his strengths. Think some of the comments on here are going just a little over the top though!

Was excellent when he came on.
Will occasionally miscontrol a pass but his energy was exactly what we needed.
Between eriksen, mctominay, Bruno, Casemiro and Fred we should be able to find a decent balance in cm.

This is the perfect role for him. Coming on the pitch against tired legs with two midfielders sitting behind him. His pressing and energy is so valuable especially as the changes are made when we seem to drop off as a team.
