Very unlucky for the penalty call but played well when he came on , moves the ball on quickly and accurately in comparison to some others around him who seem to need so many touches before they lay off the ball and everything stalls to a snails pace.

How was that given? Absolutely ridiculous decision. How VAR looks at that and rules handball I don't know.

He was our best player and only played half. Absolutely immense defending and his passing was brilliant.

OK, I thought it was terrible that VAR didn't overturn the penalty call but what was he doing rushing out and diving in like that, could he not have approached the block differently?

He did well otherwise but I'm starting to question that particular choice.

An insane handball call on three counts.

First, it was point blank range.
Second, the ball deflected off his leg.
Third, his arm was in a natural position.

Point 2 ends the discussion, but all three taken together make this possibly the worst handball call in the history of football. If I’m wrong about that I’d like to see the YouTube videos of the more insane handball calls.

Him and Eriksen are absolutely vital to us. You can tell he's an elite player already.

That refereeing decision was an absolute travesty though, how can they call that with VAR?

When he's not on the field we're truly terrible at playing out and at turning the forcing of long balls into chances in the middle 3rd to create opportunities for the front 4 and Eriksen to get on the ball in situations where they're not facing their own goal.

The speed and accuracy that he gets the ball back in midfield is really striking. Half the time when it comes to him from midfield he just first times it back with pace. Compared to Lindelof and Maguire taking three touches to steady themselves and two more to ready the pass, it's incredibly refreshing. I noticed he did that for our first goal vs Liverpool, but it wasn't a one off, just how he plays.

That was never a pen and he was unlucky, BUT he also stepped on their attacker in extra time. I think he is doing okey and I like him but he needs to be a bit more careful.

Scandalous decision against him. Did very well when he came on apart from one header he completely missed

Oh man. Don’t get me started.

VAR aside, I thought the referee had a shocker. Real were constantly fouling us. There was a period just after half time where we about 6 of our attacks in a row where stopped by blatant fouls, all in the space of a couple of minutes. And he didn’t even have a word, never mind get his cards out.
Its become the norm with spanish sides in europe.

Love watching him defend, and makes us so much better when he's passing from the back. Adds intensity to all our team.

Stupid decision given against him.

Yes even there I think he got a nudge but stayed on his feet. Think he had a great half regardless, fantastic to see him trying to drive the team from defense

I wished Maguire or Bruno would have been in his face at some point. It was ridiculous. Constant fouling and almost no cards.

I’m not sure if you’re serious here, Dwaz? Rushing out and diving is literally the only way to block a shot in that scenario.

Night and day when he plays vs Maguire/Lindelof. Everything just happens faster with more aggression and purpose.

Surprised no one has mentioned that unbelievable run he made where he beat one or two players before playing a beautiful outside of the left pass down the wing into the path of Garnacho. Would like to see a gif of that moment. What a joy he is to watch.

Him, Varane and Eriksen are our most important players. The gap in quality between them and their understudies is colossal.

I'd add Malacia and Dalot to that list. They are very comfortable on the ball whilst providing energy and in this team the alternatives are a drop in quality. I'd also add that Sancho, Martial and Antony will be important in terms of maintaining possession further up the pitch. Also an unpopular opinion but yesterday we missed mct's energy and drive in that midfield. I can see why ten hag doesnt qant to change the first 11, combined they just compliment each other.

He is quite probably the most comfortable player on the ball at the club. That says a lot both in how technically gifted he is for a CB and how poor the rest of our team is.

The only other player I get that sort of vibe with is probably Martial.

Totally serious. Rushing out and diving in seems a bit rash. Step out and stay big with your hands out of the way. If Eric Bailly had done what Martinez did last night this place would be livid.

I think it’s reaching to try and attribute any blame on Martinez there. It’s literally one of the worst VAR decisions seen at Old Trafford.

What, like VVD against us? Martinez did the right thing to charge down the shot.
Nope. VVD just stood there. Not the same at all. You are ignoring the part where I said step out. Seeing where the ball hit him I think had he stayed on his feet he might have taken the shot in the chest and not given away a (ridiculously unfair) penalty.

No way. Blocking a shot is all about getting as close as possible, as quick as possible.
Sure, but players need to consider outcomes, too. I think it was rash and he could have taken a more measured approach. But we were disorganized as feck in that moment so that rashness isn't surprising.

It was but you put yourself out there like that and it gives the ref a decision to make. We know how bad they are about that, too.

What a man! Even his resting face when he came on just screamed intensity. Especially when he was staring at the 4th official

Watching Maguire and Lindelof for the first time after a while yesterday, the difference in levels of intensity between them and Martinez was night and day.

By far the best player on the pitch when he came on yesterday. Still can't get over the ridiculous penalty against him.

This is it.

I don't actually think he's any better than Lindelgod or Maguire in terms of actual ability, but his intensity and desire adds an extra 10% to his game, which makes him a much better player.

Although, he made an exceptional run late in the second half, and threaded a ball through to Fred (?) I think, which was brilliant to watch.
