Messi is an inspiration to those kids on the pitch with him right now. Proving that you don't have to grow up before fulfilling your dreams.
All you need is dedication, generational talent and a wealthy club to cover all your expenses, house your family and to dose you to the nines with HGH.

Messi just smashed all the arguments, "didn't win trophy with NT", "Didn't win WC".

Won the world cup, best player in the tournament and also scored a brace in finals. Amazing end to his career.
He won Copa America already

I don't mean to be a dick but how many times did you actually watch him play?

Messi scored almost half of Maradonas goals in 1 calendar year ffs both Messi and Ronaldo are miles clear
I watched all off his world cup games and many off his Napoli ones.

I had a vhs of his highlights when I was a kid and was enamored with him, I don't think anyone since has matched him in sheer brilliance.

Also the goal argument is ridiculous, he was a number 10 while messi was basically a forward post 2009.

What counts against Pele is that he didn't play outside Brazil for a club, but 3 world cups is hard to argue against.

They’re both absolutely amazing players but f*****ck imagine judging a player on this?!

Martinez is better than Schmeichel
Macallister is better than De Bruyne

Why can’t we just appreciate how much they’ve brought to the game even though Ronaldo has been a c*ck.

Both outstanding

It's your perogative, but how can you not prefer watching a player who at his peak scored 73 goals in a season?
I have always felt like prime Ronaldo was the most dangerous player against any team, even during Messi's 73 goals season. Still think he was the most dangerous player ever, just not the GOAT but Messi is.

Ronaldo is, was and always will be better. The fact that Messi had better players around him for whole career doesn't change that fact.
Yeah but he isn't, wasn't and won't be was/is/will he?

The debate will never die, sadly, but so pleased for him on a personal level. He never had anything to prove after such a phenomenal career, but you could see how much he wanted to bring a World Cup home to Argentina, and he’s finally done it.

Think he would much rather have a World Cup title than a fake title of goat.

Messi is the goat - and I'm a fan of Ronaldo, although he's ruined his football legacy lately.

Messi is the goat.

As a United fan I despise Cristiano Ronaldo and am happy that Messi is the GoAT. No debates anymore.

As England fan I hate Argentina but wanted Messi win because I want Cristiano Ronaldo suffer till the end.

Maradona will definitely have more romance around him with the Hand of God and that solo dribble against England a couple of years after Falkland War.
Think most argentinians will know how how much harder Maradona worked for it. No protection from refs back then, defenders were allowed to kick lumps out of you. They had one of the easiest runs in this tournament.

Winning a World Cup with Montiel, Otamendi, Acuna, Lauturo Martinez is a genuine GOAT feat and a perfect way to cap an incredible career.

Yeah, so ? No one is saying he's not past his best. He still has enough skill set to be useful even while being washed out. Ronaldo without his physical abilities is a hinderance more than a help. He does nothing for the team when he's not scoring.
 we're just having a laugh here.

Maradona was washed for years and years of his career same as Brazilian Ronaldo

When you're talking about a goat then longevity is a major factor and nobody will come close to Messi and Ronaldo for me

0% doubt that he's way ahead of C. Ronaldo. That was of course also true before this game.

And I think his stats are too insane to not put him ahead of Maradona and Pele.

GOAT.

So a major argument was that Messi couldn't do it on the biggest stage and when the pressure was on, he'd bottle it. Surely he's shut that down now. He did everything anyone could have asked for in the final.

He sits alongside Pele & Maradona now for sure. Feel bad for Mbappe he couldn't have done anymore to help France what a performance, surely he will still win the Golden Ball.
Pundits had him up there in 2011. And saf and pep

What higher highs does Maradona have?

Messi scored 91 goals and contributed 22 goals for club and country in 69 games. Maradona at his highest cannot compete with that level of Messi.

Messi carried Argentina to this WC win pretty much, which is the highest high for Maradona.

So not only has Messi matched Maradona in a WC, everything he has done at club level for the last 20 years is just the icing on the cake.

You really are clutching at straws.
Pele?

I do hate the obsession with GOAT debates in different sports. In my second favourite sport tennis, non-stop GOAT debates are beyond tedious and it’s amazing how many people are sad enough to get so worked and riled up about them.

But I’m happy that the Messi vs. Ronaldo debate has been well and truly slammed shut for good (even if Argentina lost today it still would have in my opinion).

It tells you how great Ronaldo was for such a long time that there even was a conversation
Ronaldo is, was and always will be better. The fact that Messi had better players around him for whole career doesn't change that fact.
There was not a single second in our lives after 2009 where Ronaldo was a better footballer than Messi. Huge respect for Ronaldo though that there even was a conversation. And the outcome of this final wasn't gonna change anything.

The WC is the pinnacle in the eyes of those who think it's the pinnacle. I don't see that. 3 consecutive ChL trophies is a bigger feat in my view.

If Messi hadn't won the CL it would be an argument but he's won both so its not even comparable for me

Not denying his problems and his less than ideal longevity but peak wise i haven't seen anyone better.

Rondo us only comparably to Maradona and pele if you value longevity highly which is fine but not something that u necessarily do myself.

Maradona played for Napoli most of his career, the equivalent of Atletico Madrid.
He played for them for 7 years, he was in Europe for 11 years, yet only won 2 league titles. Regardless of the achievement for Napoli, it is not enough to put him above Messi at club level. Not even close.

As a massive Ronaldo/United fan I can't deny that Messi is the goat.
Same here, huge Ronaldo and United fan, I already had no qualms with those who thought Messi was better, I certainly won't have either now. It's incredible what Ronaldo did alongside a freak of nature like Messi. Ronaldo had no right to even dispute the crown, by 2011 the whole internet mocked him for being finished while Messi existed, while Ronaldo was playing world class football week in week out, and he put his head down and worked his ass off to put himself on a category of players where Messi is, Pele, Maradona, and almost no one else.

While I didn't want Messi to win, it's so deserved for him, and I am happy for him. Both of the players will be attached to each other forever in eternal discussions, and that's one of, if not THE, largest accomplishment of Ronaldo's career.

Ronaldo has said Messi was special, and Messi was asked about the best 5 players he saw playing, and he didn't include Ronaldo on that list, and said Ronaldo was on his level, too, and didn't belong in that list because he was above it. That's my take from all of this. If both have said this from each other, we can give our opinions and discuss things, but if both players have said it, that matters way more to me than my own opinion and everyone else's.

Ronaldo will always be my favorite player but Messi is just special and, honestly, a great guy, too.
Edit: also I don't wanna be unfair to Maradona, but I just can't see as of today why I personally would consider him better than Messi. But I didn't watch Maradona play, so...

Messi is easily the greatest player I've ever seen. But it wasn't just his ability to score or create but also his supreme technical ability on the ball, which influenced the game in multiple phases of play where his dribbling and passing was on another level.

The likes of Haaland and Mbappe will score a ton of goals in their careers but neither will come close to the technical excellence of Messi and neither will have the longevity like Messi has displayed for almost two decades imo.

Messi has eclipsed Maradona for Argentina, and the Napoli argument doesn't even come close. Messi has the WC and the Copa. Maradona only won the WC. Messi for Argentina > Maradona for Argentina.

Assuming PSG win their league and get into the latter stages of the CL, I think there's a good chance of another Ballon d'Or heading his way.

Don't care about the GOAT argument, do care that this beyond any doubt or rational debate cements Messi as better than Ronaldo. It was already so but this makes even the other argument ridiculous.
