Ballon d’Or 2023 - his to lose now?

Obviously he won’t give a shit about that though. He’s completed his career with this.

Pele, Maradona & Messi far and away the greatest to ever play the game. No comparison to those 3.

Win the CL with PSG for his 5th CL would be cherry on the top though

Could do with buying his wife some new jeans though. They've got holes in them old ones.

To me the debate is over

Those who try to claim footballing reasons, this is a guy who dribbled as good or better than best, took freekicks better than beckham, and scored more goals than most strikers in story. The most extraordinary and complete foward player ever

Those who claim he never won a WC, well, there it is. Also has won everything else

Some say that he can be on the same tier than Pele and Maradona. For me he probably is better but since they played in different eras, this probably cant never be settled

The only arguments left are some based of spite or envy. No objective way to prove that messi is not the goat. We are so lucky to witness him all over these years

And i am a CR7 fan

I dont think Messi gives a feck about possibly winning a 9th Ballon D'Or. He's got his WC now. He could retire tomorrow and be considered the greatest ever by most.

Remember when a lot on this forum decided to change their votes because Ronaldo signed for United and scored a few goals last year haha.

Really though if your measure of whether he's the GOAT would have been changed by every Argentinian who took a penalty after him missing then there's something wrong with how you assess individual players.

Even though i think Messi is the greatest i conpletely agree. Lets say Messi scores his penalty in the shootout, but his team mates fecks it up. How can that make him a worse player?

What are you on about? He’s officially not the greatest player ever but officially the ‘best’ player ever.

greatness is subjective, but the best is definitive!

Will that thread be reopened again? I think a voting thread of Messi v Maradona v Pele is more justified.

I don't think Maradona and Pele did it in Premierleague though. Messi did score a lot against English teams even though he hasn't faced Stoke City tbf

I don’t think you can ever claim a greatest of all time in a team sport that has endured for 150 years. It helps if you’ve been able to go back and review the greatest players to give them all a fair hearing. But even those who have lived through more than one contender will experience each of those through a very different lens. And the basic statistical comparisons are fairly meaningless given how much the game has fluctuated - between the spread of wealth, the balance of defensive and attacking football, and the protection afforded to the best players. In amongst that the World Cup is as close to a constant as you can find when comparing across generations and it’s fitting that Messi wins it to consolidate his spot at the top table.

I had him in the top 3 of all time alongside Pele and Maradona by around 2011. He’s continued to layer up his case ever since and, living through his brilliance every week, it’s been hard to imagine anyone better. But having watched back a lot of Maradona’s career, it’s equally hard to envisage anyone better than what he was doing under very different circumstances. And there’s something symmetrical in, for me, the three greatest-of-all-time in each peaking exactly a quarter of a century apart - 1960-62, 1985-87, 2011-13. That suggests you can have a greatest of their generation, but anything beyond that becomes almost impossible to prove.

True, I said all along the 2022 World Cup was the only thing they could do post 2019 that would have any impact on their legacy. The idea that playing 1,100 games and scoring against Newcastle in a PL game had any impact is laughable.

The hell he is, as they didn't get to the final because of him unlike Maradona, has levels of protection from refs, to be expected given he's fifa's/uefa's love child, plays on pristine pitches with better players around him to do his running, gets a rub and goes down like William Defoe, tax cheat who has tens of millions in his bank, a bully who suffers massively from Napoleon syndrome, so "goat" me arse.

I still fancy original R9 Ronaldo :wenger: .
But yeah, in reality Messi is the goat. He was the goat before this cup though.

He didn't even need the wc to be the best ever. He was/is the best "footballer" we'll probably ever see.

Wonderful player and a fantastic part of the twilight of his career, didnt think he had it in him tbh, certinly after the first couple of games, but like the side, grew into the tournament.

Without doubt one of the greatest of all time, been lucky to have seen him so often with satellite and the internet unlike Maradona.

I do feel peole labelling him the undisputable goat tough....is maybe disrespetful to players of the past. Its all opnions though, the BBC pundits seem to agree and the ITV ones almsot certainly dont agree.

He isnt for me but as other have said, hard to compare differnt eras, especially as even alive, fans would have seen far less of the likes of Pele, Zico, Maradona, Beckanbauer, Moore, Eusebio, Best, Cruff, even Brazilian ROnaldo as we have seen of both the current Ronaldo and Messi.

Longeticity wise at the level he has played I think he is probably top for me as well as stats wise, ability and top performance wise though, not for me personally.....but to inspire his team and play the way he did throughout the knocout stages at his age and point in areer, phenomenal....cant think of any of the other greats doing that to be fair
