I have to laugh at Romano earlier in the day with his tweets about United’s interest the price being £52m. A few hours later he’s off to Liverpool for £37m.

Numbers are irrelevant? In football? I really have heard it all now
Antony is incredibly press resistant and allows us to play (and keep) the ball higher up the pitch. For all of Sancho poor form our best period of pushing teams back for most of the game has been with those two on the pitch. Our game v Chelsea fell apart when we took Jadon off. It’s not all about goals and assists, Antony is a winger and not an inside forward

How the feck are you annoyed at ending up with Casemiro, Lisandro Martinez and Antony while missing out on Darwin Nunez

I'm not annoyed personally but the manager wants certain players and ends up with different players. It happened with Ole, Van Gaal, Jose, even Moyes.

Whitwell was spouting the same shite. Worth noting that Nurse shut this off in early December.

I wanted us to get him but it’s actually nice to see the club not continuing down the path of buying players in positions we already have strength in whilst the rest of the team sinks.

Striker or nothing this window. If the club sale goes through before the summer window we will be ready to reload.

All the papers tomorrow it seems going with the expected narrative of United stunned/pipped/beaten by Klopp and the whiteness of his teeth.
Justifiably.

We chased him in the summer. The player practically begged to join us, more than once. We still couldn't get it done.

Silly sausages. Nobody knows our transfer activity. Leeks have been mushed, can't even ceefax this sauce. Its schemeshed.

37 plus 10-15 add ons. And as we saw in Nunez transfer; Liverpool's add ons are safe bet.

A very good signing for Liverpool, but it makes sense that we go for a striker instead. Let's hope we manage to get something done.

If we signed him people will still complain Ten Hag only knows talents from Everdivisie and we should sign a striker instead.

I'm starting to come round to the fact that its loan deals, free transfers or nothing this window. Jump on board!

Apart from admiring the sleekness of the signing operation, nothing to feel bad about here. It's even good he's out the way so we can focus on what we actually need. And he isn't that. Even for Liverpool it looks a strange signing, unless Diaz is out for a long time.

Thank God we got Liverpool to fall for signing this guy! Never rated him, needs way too much time on the ball. Depay would be a much better option.

The entire striker force is now a quarter of a billion in and it’s still being carried by Salah. Now they’re spent on Gakpo when their midfield is the weakest link.
I wouldn’t be buffing up Liverpools deals as of late. If it’s anything like Diaz and Nunez then expect Gakpo to miss sitter after sitter every game.

Err, Diaz was great last season.

Nunez is missing a lot, but he has still scored more than anyone at United in the league this year!

Liverpool are getting a bargain in Gakpo. Time will tell, but i think we will look back and regret the Anthony signing and wish we had bought Gakpo.

I'm not all that fussed but we need a damn striker. Not sure what we have for realistic winter window options. This is a critical signing for top 4.

Well this is out the blue. I've been out the loop with the news in last few hours and see we're signing him? Didn't think we were interested, thought he was nailed on for you guys.

Gakpo is a great player and signing for Liverpool no doubt but we need a out and out striker and I couldn’t understand the links to him so I’m also glad he is off the market now

While I think we colossally over-paid for Antony, I think he'll turn out to be far more suited to the premiership than Gakpo. Antony is a better athlete, grafts harder off the ball and is a good presser and retainer of the ball. I think Gakpo will struggle with the physical intensity of the league and will find it harder to gain the separation needed for his admittedly exquisite delivery from crosses.

Good signing for Liverpool. Very fast and sneaky move to sign before the transfer window. It's shocking his transfer fee is so much lower than that of Antony.

I think he will do well. Doesn't matter what positions he play. If he doesn't play well as a striker, he will be shifted to winger or AMC role.

I suspect that we were dragging our feet on the deal -- against ETH's request ... and your side just jump at the chance. I see him being very helpful to Nunez's career at Anfield..

Nunez isn't a good buy based on his performances in the premier league or world cup.

His link up play is poor and at best, he can improve his finishing and become a 20 goals per season scorer but he will not influence games as much as Mane. Liverpool should cut loss and look to sell him away.

Scouting might not be the correct word (sorry if I got the word wrong) I’m meaning in way that they do their business, under the radar and usually for great prices

Basically their transfer business. Which is a huge reason why they have been successful recently.

I'll be far more bothered if they get Bellingham in the summer. But I'm not holding my breath for anyone coming to OT in January.

We have to get someone on loan at the very least.

Or else we are basically gifting Liverpool top 4 over us

This could be no more or less than Tenhag cooling his interest from the summer with the emergence of Garancho and the revitalised Rashford?. My personal view is Gakpo isn't outstanding at this time and was no more than ok in the world cup. We need to get a closer nailed on cert for the No.9 position.

@Adnan Interesting insight this mate, one of Court, Mayorga & Wells first January impacts, presumably ETH was in favour of signing if the money was there, with our interest from last summer.
Keeping an eye out for bits like this about our new scouting teams impact making it to journalists like this, wonder if we are eyeing a Felix w/ loan fee or something more leftfield as we do seem to need a quality body to finish well this season.
This is what we want to see, where the scouting department is empowered and has the authority to shape the incomings with ten Hag's blueprint in mind. And that's how all well run clubs operate on the football side of the club, where the heads of scouting make the decisions on who should and shouldn't be signed. Which is then acted upon by a prospective DoF/Sporting Director who oversees it all. But the scouting team will ultimately be judged on the players they bring forth. And as far as Gakpo is concerned, it didn't make a lot of sense to sign another left sided forward.

It's hard to say what we will do in the January window due to the financial situation at the club. We really do need a striker, but I'm not sure Joel Glazer will release significant funds for that to happen. There's been suggestions about the Glazers maybe dipping into the revolving credit facility again to sign players in January. I think until we get a new owner, we can't function as well on the football side of the club.

FSG at Liverpool had one of their own guys overseeing the football side of the club in Mike Gordon who was the club's President. And him being the one with the authority at the club, made it easier for the likes of Klopp and Edwards to be quick and efficient in the transfer market.

I'm glad you're taking a interest in this mate, because not many fans do and instead end up giving full credit to a DoF for the work of the heads of scouting. And it seems people don't want a DoF but rather they want very capable recruiters/head scouts who will identify talent. But they end up confusing both roles.

Murtough caught pants down and will try and PR this into sounding like we're fine with it.

Meanwhile we'll probably try and loan Arnautovic and then not even sign a top number 9 in the summer.

We spent £250m or something last summer.

what fecking more do you lot want?

Rumour to Liverpool and signed the same day, we always have months of rumours, so fecking annoying.
This is what I hate about our club. Chelsea, City and Liverpool are ruthless they want a player they sign them within a few days while us piss around all window and then panic buy for over the asking price to begin with

A striker to replace the two that left.

All well and good spending 250m but when 80m of that could have been 40m if we were efficient, and when it's just replacing outgoing players from the squad (Mata, Lingard, cavani, Matic etc), then it's easy to see why it's not enough.

£210m. Having got rid of about a third of the wage bill, and another £500k a week freed up with Ronaldo gone.

You think it's justifiable to not sign someone to replace the goals we've lost from Ronaldo leaving, just because we spent more than usual in the summer?
