Is there a way to see what his average player rating is? The other player threads have them at the top. I'm curious.

Carrick is/was never anywhere near Casemiro. Time has done Carrick massive favours as has timing. Playing in a successful side. He was a good player. Not really more than that. Casemiro is truly world class and the best CM we’ve had since Keane. If you think he’d struggle to get into the England side ahead of Gareth Barry then I don’t know what to say.

How much do we want to disrespect a proper world class player by comparing him with a good player who often went missing in big games and crumbled under pressure
How did United get away with playing Carrick in such an important role in arguably the most successful period in their history?

Well they had much better players in almost every other position

VDS world class
Evra world class
Vidic world class
Rio world class
Scholes world class
Giggs world class
Rooney world class
Ronaldo world class
Tevez world class

Also even then once Ronaldo and Tevez left, Giggs and Scholes were 3/4 years older we did a lot more finishing second than first.

People are really inferring a lot from that initial comment I made. Peak Casemiro is clearly significantly better than Carrick and would have been a key component in the England team of that time. I would say a lot of people were uncertain if Utd were getting prime Casemiro, and as good as he has been it is still not the Casemiro of 4-5 years ago, not quite as mobile, a fair bit slower but still an exceptional player. You could have a valid argument that was he has shown in the last 15 games is better, and widening the gap further with every game, than the highest level that Carrick reached if it is making people twitchy.

Peak Schweinsteiger was better than Carrick, but his level for Utd was well below what Carrick gave Utd. Peak Matic was arguably(for about 16 months) better than peak Carrick, but Utd never got that guy, they got massively declined Matic.

So Fergie persisted in carrying a passenger in Carrick all those years?

Not a chance!

For sure Casemiro will struggle to have the United career that Carrick had for many reasons. That’s a different argument to who is/was the better player.

Carrick was not consistently world class for us and by his own admission went through a period where he lost form and confidence. He was definitely a solid contributor to our success. But he also reached peaks that deserve recognition - apart from RVP he was probably our best player in 2012/13. I have fond memories of being in the away end at Loftus Road vs QPR when “Hard to believe it’s not Scholes” reverberated on repeat for about half an hour.

Do you have an argument that you haven’t made up ? Something tangible. More tangible than United won a lot = Carrick was world class. I’ve said that Carrick had an excellent season in 13. That he was a good player and at times very good but was not near to world class and had flaws to his game, ie struggled under pressure and didn’t show up in big games. He did a job but if we replaced players of the calibre of Evra, Vidic, Rio, Ronaldo, Rooney, Tevez with players of the calibre of Carrick we wouldn’t have been successful. Unless you want to argue that Carrick was world class and equal to those players. That’s tangible. Surely if we follow your argument then John O’Shea and Wes Brown were world class.

I have no idea why he came to us in his prime but thank the fecking Lord he did because he’s a top, top player.
It still feels kind of surreal doesn't it?

I know we gave him a raise, but he doesn't seem like the type of person who simply looks for the biggest paycheck. I think he was attracted to the challenge of helping bring back a sleeping giant.

Agree with this although I hate that song. There were no similarities between Carrick and Scholes at all. It all fits nicely and all but the message is bizarre as it was never hard to believe he wasn’t Scholes who was a genius. That season though Carrick was excellent and same for me second only to RVP.

It is not about career, it is about top level at Utd, not at Madrid or Brazil, or England or Spurs. No-one is going to argue that Carrick career for career is better or close to Casemiro but it wasn't impossible that we were going to get a Casemiro, at this stage of his career, who was below the top level that Carrick hit for Utd. Thankfully it seems we have got a WC player still pretty close to his best, who key in all this is still hungry.

The song is just a bit of fun and a way of showing support and appreciation to a a player when you’re at the match, not sure anyone singing it would argue that Carrick is in Scholes’ league. Football doesn’t have to be serious all the time ;)

Sorry to quote word for word but you started with ‘our best midfielder since Carrick?’ And followed it up with ‘Yep, probably better than prime Carrick’

For me regardless of the fact that Casemiro has been at United for a few months he’s a much much better player than Carrick ever was. He won’t achieve the same but you were asking about ability not achievement at United as there is no way Casemiro can match that at yesterday

I guess the real question is if Carrick was nowhere near the level of his team mates, didn’t show up in big games and crumbled under pressure then why were United so successful during his time at the club? Why is he so highly regarded by top coaches and why did the ruthless serial winner, Sir Alex Ferguson, persist with him in the heart of his midfield?

Just doesn’t add up to me.

Has said it before and will say it again.

Between him and De Jong he was always gonna be the more transformative player.

Has fixed a huge issue in our team. Both in terms of his ability but also because of his character.

De Jong may be more youtube-friendly, but I bet he would prove ineffective in our team if we wouldn’t also have brought in someone like Casemiro.

That said, I still think we need someone like De Jong to bring our midfield to the next level.
I agree with you 100%. But let’s not forget that Casemiro is the better player by far as well.

So to clarify then, because I’ve stated my case clearly....you think Carrick was on the level of those players I mentioned and that he was world class ? Otherwise you just seem to want to rely on association to prove something.

Here’s my point clearly once more....

We had 9 world class players in our best 11 from 06-09. Carrick wasn’t one of them.

Anderson/Cleverly weren’t either, neither was Gareth Barry. All were decent/good players who did a job for big clubs and had success. As did Carrick.

I think what I’m proving, in a round about way, is you’re underrating Carrick somewhat.

That’s fine though and things don’t have to be black or white on this. I’m of the opinion Carrick was quite underrated throughout his career given the role he had within the side and the array of talent that squad boasted.

Quite a few posts saying he is much better than Carrick. I’m not sure about that. Seems harsh on Carrick.

Casemiro is showing his class and is a joy to have in the team but I felt the same about Carrick. I suppose Casemiro is a better traditional no6 but Carrick has the edge for passing and playmaking.

I think Carrick is underrated, and under appreciated, but it’s quite ridiculous to suggest it’s ‘insulting’ to Casemiro for United fans to compare them as @Jeppers7 did. Even the jibe about Gareth Barry. It’s all a bit, you know, silly?

Not sure why opinions on the Caf must be one extreme or the other.

You should quote word for word, even character for character, Best midfielder Utd have had since... Carrick? was the first quote with the ellipsis and question mark pretty clearly(for me at least) indicating it wasn't a statement of fact.

Should have just said Scholes or Keane and avoided all this derailing of the thread.

Think you underrate Carrick as well, excellent player, superb passer off both feet, surprisingly mobile and read the game well. Maybe lacked a bit of aggression and not a natural leader but he was a smart player who was able to form working partnerships with numerous players, and I have grown to appreciate him more after a decade of Utd failing to replace his qualities.

I’m not sure he’s in any way under appreciated, in fact he’s become massively overrated from a player who was widely divisive and not particularly rated for a long period of his time at the club by many many in fact the vast majority of fans. A player who had a great season in 13. A player at one point displaced by Anderson and Cleverly, a player who was second fiddle to Gareth Barry for England. Gareth Barry was a very good player in his own right and an important player as City started to grow. Many times in derbies he had the better of Carrick. So I really don’t see why it’s ‘silly’ to compare Barry to Carrick ? In terms of on field performances they were very close, in terms of becoming overrated ten years on maybe not. Seemingly Carrick has gone from the above whilst playing, to on a par with Pirlo, Busquetts and now Casemiro since retiring.

It’s just silly and tiresome to throw out these extreme comments and comparisons.

I’m happy the truth is in the middle and if he was as bad as you made out Sir Alex Ferguson, and other great managers, wouldn’t rate him as they do. He’s more Xabi Alonso.

Anyway. I don’t think Casemiro would feel insulted by comparisons as you declared.

Comparisons between Carrick and Barry were made when both were playing.

Outside of a United forum I don’t think you’d get many people on the planet comparing Carrick to Busquetts, Pirlo, Alonso or Casemiro. I’d wager you’d have far more of a conversation over Barry/Carrick than any of the others.

The two played in similar positions at a similar level for club and country, neither were world class. Only United fans think Carrick was world class and that wasn’t the case while he played either.

Carrick was better for us than Tevez was. The rest of the players you mention were literally the best player in the world in their position for a good few seasons (arguable for Rooney, but he was up there and had stronger competition for that title). Carrick wasn't quite that level, but he was in the next level down. It feels like you're putting him a few levels down which I'd say is underrating him. Other than Busquets, there wasn't anybody else out there who could do his dual role of being the main defensive midfielder while also providing so much to the playmaking and creative duties. You could argue Alonso, but personally I don't think he was as good defensively and wouldn't have been able to play next to Scholes.

Carrick did have a rough 18 months at one stage (after he retired he admitted he was suffering with depression at the time), but other than that period he was great for us. The rock our midfield was built around during the most successful period in our clubs history, all while his partner in that midfield kept chopping and changing.

Carrick was class but let's be real - Casemiro is an all timer of a defensive midfielder in general footballing history... Carrick was a very good midfielder in a successful period, but he also had his troubles before finishing his career very strongly. But he wasn't anywhere close to Casemiro, and Casemiro's success really speaks for itself. He was a key player for a Madrid team that won 5 CL titles. He was the rock that gave them balanced and turned their fortunes around so that they actually started being successful.

Actually it was Pep who said Carrick was one of the best midfielders he'd seen, and on the same level as Alonso and Busquets.

I've also never heard of anyone comparing him to Barry.....not even City fans

Just needed a few minutes to figure out that without Modric and Kroos with him, he'll have less time on the ball in the middle of the park. The moment it clicked to him it's almost like he's had the skillset ready to just go from there.
Love watching him play.

Carrick 2012-2013 onwards was imperious. So good. But before that, rightfully seen as playing second fiddle to Scholes. Comparisons to Barry aplenty, specially since Barry was preferred by the national team.

Anyway, back to Casemiro. World class and should be in the discussion of the best midfielders of this generation. Arguably the best in his role. Who are the other DMs - Busquets, Kante..

Barry was preferred because he offered better balance playing behind Gerrard and Lampard. This was back when we preferred club over country and neither SAF nor the player made much fuss about it. Same with Scholes really. The only way Barry even enters this discussion was the time when Rafa infamously tried to replace Alonso with him, and lost his job over it. Not to mention ridiculed by their own fans. As I said, not even city fans were deluded enough to compare the two, so I'd be interested in seeing any posts if you could find them. Blue moon included.

Is this the Casemiro thread or Carrick's?
Missed the game and I thought let me read how he performed. But all I see is every other ex player being discussed except the player that this thread is about.
