I don’t get the hate he receives. Club Legend, good guy and I personally like his YouTube channel. Yes he said some silly shit regarding the Ronaldo situation but who hasn’t had a shit opinion on some football related topic at some point? Hating him for that is just daft.
The mentality that a football pundit must agree with every opinion I have or I'll hate on them is insane, specially when it comes to someone who loves United as much as Rio.

As a CB his best quality was reading the game. He was fantastic at it.

But a redcafe poster claims he didnt understand football..

Didn't think this had to be said as it's fairly obvious, but there's a massive difference between understanding football and coaching/managing players. They're two (actually three) completely different skills. Paul scholes was a literal genius of the game, I doubt he'd make a fantastic manager though.

Seems to be fashionable to hate former players if they don't have the exact same opinion as you. Imagine being annoyed at Rio Ferdinand attending united training

Rio can do no wrong in my eyes, love the guy. He loves the club just as much as any of us and was a big part of our success.

There's always been a section of fans who didn't like how outgoing even when he was a player but that says more about them than about Rio. In a less pronounced way he was seen as a bit of a Pogba in terms of having personality outside of the pitch way beyond the typical PL football at the time.

The difference is Rio delivered and in big moments too. Even as a podcaster and pundit I think he's really good especially as he has inside knowledge of United both past and present. People seem to have forgiven Keane for his borderline insane defence of Ronaldo but for some reason can't do the same for Rio.

We, caf, hate our legends .. of PL era, I can only think Cantona being universally liked here.
Yeah, apart from Cantona every legend gets weird criticism/hate, even including SAF.

In a ETH thread pic with ETH and Fergie dining drew all sorts of conclusions in the sense of hope Fergie is messing around the club too much or undermining the current manager.

No idea why people are calling Rio a good guy. Guy is a scumbag for what he was getting up to while his wife was dying of cancer.

Know nothing about that and who knows how to handle such things when they come to you at young age. But I spent a good while with him stuck at an airport going to America. He was absolutely brilliant, I have a lot of time for him.

Yeah, the kids are all doing it. Imagine! Just imagine! Oh, my days. Imagine thinking someone was a brilliant player but, at the same time, not being a massive fan of things they say and do that aren't playing football. How can someone hold two thoughts in their head at the same time? Ridiculous stuff. Can you imagine!?

What is the problem in him attending training exactly?

Respect him as a player, probably the greatest centre back we've ever had in my opinion. However, all that Ronaldo nonsense and getting in bed with a pure bellend like Steven Howson is very irritating. I'd rather cherish the memory of the brilliant player and try and ignore the dreadful YouTuber he's become. Brass neck turning up to training in United's biggest week after he was so intent Ten Hag was getting it wrong just a few weeks ago.
Jaysus. Really? What did he say?

He's there as a professional journalist. I couldn't care less. That's his job. If I were him though, I'd be feeling like a bit of a plonker after very publically backing Ronaldo over the manager a few weeks ago. Hazard of the job I suppose.

So he backed Ronaldo so what. He should avoid ETH for eternity cause he did it?
Also he praised ETH and the job he's doing a week or so ago.

I had no idea about any of this until after verifying your claim. Rio the footballer, brilliant. Rio the man, however, has issues. Most of us have done things we regret, but it’s hard to imagine doing such things while your wife is dying of cancer.

I never said he should, I said that I'd feel like a plonker if I was him. I merely saying that you can respect a player for their achievements and their ability, I think he was the best, but it doesn't mean you have to like them as a person. That's okay.

Thought Rio was insufferable when it came to Ronaldo but other than that most of his criticism is fair and I feel all around he's one of the more positive ex-United player pundits out there.

Even as a podcaster….
Oof. That ‘Live with Five’ thing he does is like nails on a chalkboard for me.

There’s a reasonable shout that he’s one of the best 10 centre halves of all time. I think he’s criminally underrated.

But good lord he’s an odd fellow when he talks football. From what I remember he’s created a podcast that’s Arsenal Fan TV but with clout. Of course he’s forgot more about club structures and on-field performance than I’ll ever learn. But he makes Ben Foster look sharp on his podcast. It’s all soundbytes and flowery superlatives.

Suggesting Ronaldo is the best is hardly mad is it?
It's not like he said Darren Fletcher is?!

Doesn't understand football
Presumably as well as "Mickson" on the internet?
At least I knew that Ronaldo was bad for us and that Ole wasn't the right manager, more than Rio "the expert" knew. But because he was a great footballer he must know everything about anything!

I feel like it's about knowing who can contribute what - I'd never tune in to Rio for analysis of whether his old mates Ole or Frank are doing a good job or whether he'd prefer Quatari or Ratliffe ownership, it's obvious he'll make a mess of that. But hearing his thoughts on the atmosphere at Carrington after visiting, or whether it was harder to play against Tevez or Aguero, etc, he has excellent insight about many things.

I find sometimes it's hard to listen to/appreciate ex-player pundits who mostly had successful careers, as their expectations are a bit too high. Since he was a teenager, Rio has been revered as an all time english CB, and there wasnt really a time once he matured where he wasnt that, and he won countless accolades. I find Carragher a much more likeable pundit and it's partly because he has experienced the true ebbs and flows of football, being part of awful Liverpool teams but also playing in two CL finals. When you know nothing but success, you're always going to criticize those who aren't successful, and I feel Rio is unable to be more balanced.

Love him as a player, loved him as a character, but lost me when I found out he was a Klaus Schwab stooge

Fair enough. I think he comes across as thick and extremely clamorous.

It's just a fun podcast with banter. Stop taking everything so damn seriously.

You have to separate the artist from his work. I love many Manchester United former players, I have absolutely no idea how they are on their personal lives and certainly I don't care.

I still like Giggs the player, even though we all know he's an awful human being.
