So is this good then? Worth getting? Played FF since the original FF7 and enjoyed them right up to FF10 and then the remake of FF7.

How does this compare the more recent FF’s and is it better than 15?

15 was alright but pretty boring, never got round to finishing it.
I'm only a few hours in and really enjoying it so far. The last modern FF I bothered with was FF13 and I hated it, their subsequent releases looked very bad but this so far has been a return to form.

Don't you see?? It sometimes jumps from 59 to 58 fps, it's basically a slide show!

Or Something.
Zoomer gamer problem. Losing 1 fps or not playing on a 120 hz monitor or not sitting on a gaming chair.

Much better than 15. The combat is better too, though I'm not a huge fan yet. I love DMC and hoped it would be similar and while it is at a glance it's a rather simplified version of it. Elements also do not make a difference at all reducing magic to not much more than a generic ranged attack with a few colours.

Story and overall feel is great though and the spectacle in combination with the amazing soundtrack is mental.

I do feel Japanese devs have fallen severely behind on the west regarding world design and side quests. It's pretty l, but there is not that much interactivity and how you can still design a game with a quest that asks you to collect wood from an npc 5 yards away and bring it back is jsut stupid.
Cheers mate, appreciate it. I feel like the FF’s have fallen behind and stopped innovating in the last 10 years or so, shame really because the RPG hay day was the PS1 era for me.

I’ll probably pick this up when it goes on sale.

Yeah 13 was the point I said I’m done with FF’s being a must own from launch. Skipped a bunch of the spin offs until I picked up 15 in a sale and didn’t enjoy that either. Hoping this is a return to some of the classic FF elements mixed in with the FF7 remake.

Final Fantasy isnt really Final Fantasy if it doesnt involve turn based actions be it ATB or its other variants. I enjoyed FFXIII battle system, it is real time but feels like turn based due to waiting time between actions. Didnt like XV system, dont know about XVI. Although no matter the system I tend to enjoy the story. But not X-2, it can feck off, its so dumb. XIII-2 is at least bearable although playing it made me feel like I was a girl gamer.

Tlthe X-2 battle system and jobclasses were fantastic though. Shame it was so silly. Though I did like LeBlanc or whatever her name is.

Is it worth playing? I have it as it came with FFX but it always looked a bit silly and I was a bit burned out after finishing X. I might go back if the game itself is actually good.

Oh definitely. It's far better than all 13s and 15 if you ask me. The battle system might even be my favourite out of all of em.

It's hard to recommend, because it has such ridiculous story/character moments. There are a lot of good elements to it, especially its battle and job system, but so much cringe. It's the sort of game you'd be embarrassed about if someone caught you playing it, but is secretly enjoyable.

Just did Caer Norvent. It’s fecking awesome so far but I feel I can kind of predict where some of the story is going. Potential spoilers below. It’s just a theory and I may be wrong but wouldn’t be surprised if I’m right.

Clive is obviously a threat to the dominants, which is why the second dominant seems to be after him and was probably the intended target in the initial battle.

BUT, it feels like the the guy in the robe at Caer Norvent wasn’t who attacked Clive, and the most likely scenario is that it’s Clive’s brother still alive. Tbh I feel like the game strongly hinted at this so maybe I’m not as clever as I feel.

Its story and characters are easily the best since FFX. I'm only 8-9 hours in but you really do 'feel' the characters far more than recent FF entries. It's a million times darker than 15 as well.

Negatives are bland side quests and i haven't really seen a map yet where i've really been blown away (graphics are very nice though). Overall it's looking very promising so far. I kinda suck at the more action-orientated combat though and i do miss 7R's ability to pause, select a command and have a bit of a think about my next move.

No spoilers, but almost every section feels like a huge set piece that you typically only see at the end of most games.

Kind of a just fly to Mordor thing, but
traveling with a party of 3 dominants (yourself, Cid and Jill), you could basically just conquer the world without breaking a sweat as I doubt anyone of the others will survived being ganged up on, but oh well

The Rosaria section is a little bit boring so far. Too many pointless quests.

It's one of the weakest parts of the game. The unfolding story/narrative does such a better job of presenting the world and lore more naturally than the sidequests and the story is pretty damn good so far.

Still playing atm but had to say something to someone, just completed
phoenix gate part 2

My word what a game so far, the combat, the set pieces to each level, the characters and localisation and THE STORY.

This might be one of my favourite FF titles all together depending on how the rest of the game goes, exceptional so far!

The imperial city section with the Dame suffers from the same I’d say. Lots of ‘go from point A to B’ type quests that just feels like padding to a game that has a good enough story not to need it.

I will say though despite the side quests in that area being mostly the same old shit, one or two did take a dark turn.

At least it's not Ash Ketchum. The stupidest name award goes to Ash Ketchum. From Satoshi to Ash Ketchum. What the feck were they smoking?

It’s gotten epic again pretty quickly.

The story is literally what you expect a (good) Final Fantasy game to be, character drama intertwined with magical end of the world nonsense.

The Eikon battle against

Ifrit

Getting further in I'm a bit mixed about it really. The story and characters are awesome, but it really lacks depth from a gameplay perspective. Leveling up and stats are entirely superficial as there is no choice whatsoever apart from equiping better gear as it becomes available and the fighting itself, while flashy and fun in it's own right is too watered down to have the action carry the entire game.

I'm still enjoying it a lot, but they missed some opportunities with this.

I'd agree, which is why the long drawn out gameplay sections bore me a bit more than the huge set pieces and story progression. I kind of just want to blitz through the story and fight bosses at this point.

I agree with your assessment of it. If I consider it as a Final Fantasy game and what I look for in the series it's disappointing in terms of player agency, party management, and character development (in terms of skills and abilities). If I purely accept it as an action game it's great and on a par with God of War, slightly better story but slightly worse combat.

I feel it would have taken much effort to add more meaningful RPG elements. As a nitpick I also wish Clive could run faster, so often it's just boring running from point A to point B at such slow speeds. The Chocobo helps once you get it, but you are so frequently kicked off it for a story segment it's a bit meh.

After 12 hours in the game it was a 9/10 game for me originally, again just judging as an action adventure game. That has now dropped to an 8/10 but still enjoying it.

I do find myself getting bored of the combat, something that never happened in God of War or even Spider-Man. It's a lot of flash and eye candy but ultimately quite repetitive.

The runspeed is infuriating. Especially since he eventually starts sprinting if you run long enough. No idea why you can't just sprint with a button.

Looked into this because of the hype but not sure it’s my kind of game. Seeing lots about pointless fetch quests and a bit of a dead world outside of the story. Plus I’ve always enjoyed the turn base aspect of combat in these games and things like Persona. I don’t want to play Devil May Cry.
