I say fair play to him.

He put it in the media that he has a good win percentage when he starts matches...

Started the next game for us and we won!

He talked a good game, and he delivered a good game.

Long may it continue.

They played long ball game. Without Maguire and Evans, we would be destroyed. I don’t remember Lindelof won any aerial duel on the left today.

The only team that matters
Good at clearing the ball and no mistakes, but too slow on the ball.
Better to retain it than give it away, especially as the movement was so poor he really had nothing ahead to pass to

When he plays with confidence, he's a good player. He's always been better than Lindelof and, imo, is better than Varane, too.

Problem is, when the memes, ridicule and away fan mocking catches up to him, he loses his confidence and becomes a hindrance on the pitch, and that's always going to be the case here because, at United, you'll always have a microscope on you, so I still don't think he has a long term future here.

Everyone knows I've been his biggest critic. He was immense tonight, I just hope he carries that in to the derby.

Hasn't put a foot wrong in the last few games, to be fair. Sheffield may have played to his strength but you can only beat what's in front of you.

Good grief. We made Sheffield look like a top 10 team and Maguire did well. He still has the pace of a glacier and loses his composure in the big games. I'm tired of having smoke blown up my shorts trying to convince me he is anywhere good enough for a top 4 team unless it's Newcastle.

I, like many people, enjoy criticizing him, but he was undisputedly our best player last night and that's a silver lining in an otherwise (another)terrible team performance.

Frequency of the meme's and ridicule have dropped hard with him demoted from captain and rotating. Seem to be doing him good.

Average performance I would say. Solid at the back but did not much for the build-up or getting the back line further up to press higher. His long balls to Rashford looked good but were pointless most of the time.

Anyway he is neither the problem nor the solution. Our defense was fine last season and I would say also this season our biggest problem are the front 6 as we have no clue how play effective football in the opposition’s half.

Why would you enjoy criticising one of your own players...?

If only we'd been relegated last season, he'd probably be one of our best performing players this season

He's a meme at this point. All of the footballing world has accepted it. He's the epitome of circus, bad defender(footballer). There are countless compilations online of his mistakes.

It is what it is. I've just accepted it and joined the party.

No issue with him playing in these gritty games where you’re defending your box and need to dig in. That’s his biggest strength.

Away to Sevilla or when we’re attempting to play out with the ball, that’s different. Did well tonight though, no doubt.
I actually think it is the opposite. It was a gritty game, but Man Utd was defending the box for what? The first 25 min? It was in the second half he really excelled. And we were not defending the box during this spell.

Maguire is better when we are dominating. He will struggle against Man City when he is supposed to defend deep.

Really pleased for him that he’s managed to put in some good performances. Don’t think he’s a long term solution at CB but it does take a strength of character to deal with the abuse he gets and still perform.

Pretty much reinforces what I have always said - Maguire is a good defender against a direct, long ball team. He is also a really good long passer himself.

Maguire struggled when asked to play a high line, against skilful pacy opponents, and to play a quick possession game and not given any time on the ball.

He was a good fit for last nights game, and he put in an excellent performance because everything played to his strengths.

Manchester Utd never lose, just run out of time
Good game, easily our best player today. Hopefully he can continue playing well going forward.

We also saw why he made the comment about how often we win with him, as suddenly the commentators were pushing that narrative quite a lot (without any mention of almost all those games being 'easy' ones).

Its more to do with players infront of him making absolutely no effort to win the second ball or being completely absent most of the time.
It's a bit of both. In this particular game I'd put it more on the other players, but in general it is a definite weakness of Maguire. He doesn't really aim his clearances anywhere so they end up going straight to the opposition far more often than they should. It was something that really stood out to me when Martinez came in, and suddenly those same clearances were constantly going to a teammate.

I am far from Maguire's biggest fan, however, he played well last night. Was initially worried about him getting done when stepping out, and some of his early headers lacked the right direction/weight. However, after we started coming into it, his level visibly went up.

Its pathetic isn't it, the sheep just join in and participate in the pile on. I didn't want Maguire at Utd, think his lack of mobility was always going to be an obvious problem but he is at worst, an above average PL CB. The idea that he is some sort of comedy donkey is just illogical hysteria.

He was ok yesterday against a team with Ollie mcburnie (a player who wouldn't get on for Livingston), though every header and attempted clearance went straight back to the opposition and he completely kills any chance of playing from the back quickly. He brings so much uncertainty into the back line aswell.

The way English pundits go on about him is absolutely baffling though.
They said last night that he always gives an "honest" performance. Like what the feck does that even mean, something english pundits will only say about an English player who is shite at football .(Scottish pundits use this muck for Scottish players who aren't good at football too) . It means absolutely nothing worth saying .

The pundit also said he always takes responsibility, when this is the complete opposite of Harold Maguire, an arrogant floof who thinks he has nothing to prove to anyone and nothing is his fault.

He was not alone, there were many players who were either slow on the ball or didn’t move without the ball. But I think this is what you get with Maguire and Evans. Good at clearing, strong in the air, but slow on the ball and probably also getting problems against speedy attackers.

Definitely. Problem is, though his performances warrant him starting, the more he starts, the bigger the chance of a mistake happening, and all it'll take is that one mistake to pile on the memes and ridicule again; leaving us back at square one.

I do think we need to give Maguire some credits: he stays calm and hardworking , no bad mouthing for losing his place but trying to fight it back , and give fairly well performance for our last two games to steady the ship when the whole team was in rock bottom confidence level. I would rather try Maguire to mark Harland in Derby next week; Varane has been terrible in last couple Derby games and seems too slim and lightweight to really give pressure to Harland . Maybe a heavy tank would give some surprises here

Yet we have allowed more against similar opponents with Maguire not in the line up. But I guess that doesn't suit your agenda
What is my agenda exactly? I don't think Maguire is very good, he almost exclusively plays against bad to mediocre teams, and stopped us from selling him this summer, which could have gotten us a starting CB that suits our game more.

He played well in the exact type of game he usually plays well in, every one of our players should be playing well against absolute dross, the fact that they don't doesn't mean you have to fawn all over the ones that do.

An example of the modern 'fan' that base their opinions on memes and what youtube tells them to.

Fair play he played alright against a bobbins team but lets see how he does against a pacey forward team.

Christ we have City soon imagine him trying to keep up with Haaland. Frightening thought.

Credit to him he is working hard and doing all the right things, dominating the air, stepping forward, playing out from the back. Problem is he's still so awkward with it, it's obvious it's not natural for him and he just isn't good enough to do it at a high level.

Too late! :p
What exactly makes you think Maguire is better than Varane? Maguire his main strenght is winning headers and Varane does that just as well. Varane is also smarter in positioning himself, Varane is quicker and deals with fast and nimble forwards a lot better. Varane looks more like a leader too.

Maguire is almost always fit which is one of Maguire his positives and we cant say that about Varane unfortunatly. Maguire also has a better long pass towards the left forward when given time but overall?

I really dont see how you could think that Maguire is a better player than Varane. I could understand better than Lindelof. I could even understand better than Martinez if you are more of a fan of the type of defender that Maguire is... but better than Varane? I dont see that unless you take fitness into consideration.
