Before we signed him I rated him around a Tom Cleverly level player and I was never excited about the signing. In hindsight I think I was over rating him.

One of those players I've never really rated and he has been awful so far.

Had 1 decent shot. Also had an awful 1. Other than that some running, a couple of normal passes and thats it

I'll say it again:

Zero control, zero possession, no Bruno, against Newcastle's B-side.

What's his excuse now?

Ok. Serious question. Can anyone give me a highlight reel for this guy? I'm not even asking for a full game performance. I'm asking for anything he has done that is of merit at all at United.

Someone clip them all together into a youtube video and see if we can get it to be over a minute.

I'll be up front about the fact I was sceptical about signing Mason Mount from the get go. We needed a central midfield upgrade. We bought an attacking midfielder. Now we're trying to shoehorn him into a deeper position, just like we tried with Van de Beek, just like we tried with Eriksen (surprisingly worked against low quality teams). Why not just spend £55 million on a proper box-to-box midfielder? Mount's strengths, such as they are, are not in areas where we needed reinforcing.

God knows what the thinking was behind this one. The briefing behind it was Mount was wanted by Ten Hag but, looking at how he's treated him, its hard to see it. Before Mainoo got injured in preseason Mount was playing as a #10, rotating with Bruno. He had a couple of games at #8 and then bang he was out of the team. Complete contrast to Antony who always plays, regardless of how bad he is, where you can clear see Antony's Ten Hag's guy. Makes you wonder? After all, I don't believe Ten Hag has the Manchester press pack on speed dial. Was this just certain people at the club trying to put out the line they were 'backing the manager'?

It is blindingly obvious that Mount is not a CM. To partner Casemiro with Mount is pure stupidity. What was Ten Hag thinking ?

His non-attempt to stop Livramento for Newcastle's first goal told you everything you needed to know.

What was even the point of him? 55m for an average player in the last year of his contract. That's the kind of ridiculous recruitment that has sealed ETH's fate. 100m for Anthony. Onana has been personally responsible for a couple of demoralising losses this season.

ETH's players has cost his job.

Waste of space and money. We have no clue what to do with him, and now we're stuck with him.

I think like a lot of us I was puzzled when he came. Whenever I'd seen him play (barring briefly at Derby) I'd always wondered what the fuss was about. Sure the stats were there, but I could never see it. Hoped he would prove me wrong, but so far he looks exactly the same. Tidy but nothing amazing. I guess in a well coached and setup system he would perform, but we are not that by far at the moment. Can possibly blossom in a new set up, but right now it's just another puzzle. Van de Beek+

He always played at left of a front three for England and a few Chelsea games I watched before. And, everyone says he is a midfielder. I have been confused since he joined us.

This signing never made any sense. As bad as Sanchez, Maguire, Antony etc were, at least they made a modicum of sense. But Mason Mount? For 60m? Why? I'll never fecking understand it.

Can’t believe Ten Hag called Chelsea’s best player a complete midfielder over the summer. I also can’t believe we’d hire a manager that smokes crack.

From memory it's at least 200k per week but I think it's actually closer to 250k.
Yeap, when I saw that he didn't want to sign the contract Chelsea offered him, and we went in for him, I was sure we were making the same old mistake of buying someone who was primarily looking for a pay day.

A blooper reel would be a fun watch.

I never rated Mount and haven't watched a game for Chelsea or England where he stood out as anything other than a decent, tidy player.

However, when we pursued him early on in the summer, seemingly at ETH's insistence, I trusted that the manager must clearly know what he was doing and had a clear plan. Sadly, that wasn't the case, obviously. There is no chance in my mind Mount becomes a top player for us. Doesnt even really seem like we know how best to use him.

He was Liverpool’s main target too. Pretending he’s a bad player is silly, but we look to have no plan on how to use him well.

You know it’s bad when we’ve reached the ‘Man City also wanted Harry Maguire’ phase of the Mount saga less than 3 months in.

He’s been terrible, but most potentially good signings would look terrible if there is no real thought given on how they are to be used at their new club or they are used inappropriately. It’s very difficult to understand quite why we so wanted Mount right now, as there’s no immediate way him and Fernandes get in the same team, and Bruno is just a far better player.

I don’t really see the point in going after individual players at this point, because it is pretty clear to me it is not about individuals. Every single signing regresses. Drop who you want. Sign who you want. It means feck all without embedding a clearly understood style of play. Fire all of these guys. Give ETH another 25 players. It’s no substitute for quality coaching and building an actual team. Newcastle’s second string have more cohesion than any team we can put out.

As your initial post stated, we have no idea of how to use him because his best position just so happens to be the club captains who is also a far better player.

It’s difficult to seperate Mount & the transfer, he made comments about wanting to be a no.8 so he’s being criticised for being nowhere near a good enough one. The truth is a number of posters feel safer criticising the player as if they don’t they have to point their ire at the manager.

Players do regress here but I wouldn’t say Mount has particularly, he just isn’t good enough at what we need him to be.

Another bang average player on a huge contract who will still be here in 4-5 years time.

It was such a mind boggling signing and it's proving true. This club has wasted such huge amounts of money it's no wonder we are a laughing stock.

And this was a definite Ten Hag signing because we overpaid while also giving him the No.7.

Spot on. I'd say old weghorst is another candidate but I thought he'd do OK when he first came being an actual No9 and all, I didn't expect much from mount and he's delivering in that.
Weghorst is not a flop. He's a crapshot type of signing. We know that if he fails, we can easy cut our loss. ETH started him and subbed him on a lot when he's clearly out of depth and offered nothing is annoying, but at the end of the day, we didn't make his stay permanent. Weghorst Sabitzer, and potential Amrabat and Reguilon loan are just that: emergency loan with low expectation.

For the money we spent on Mount, we intended to use that to improve our midfield to kick on from last season. Somehow made matter worse, and now stuck him with and his expensive financial package. Cutting our losses won't be easy while spending again on a proper no 8 would likely cost us a big sum.

Can ETH not get anything better from players like VDB or Mount? If so then it would be much better to try homeground players.

Mason Mount was an inexplicable signing. He was the opposite to what we needed. We are now stuck with him. He will be impossible to offload.
