Reporter outside the ground on sky says it is more likely an agreement to go amicable until he leaves and not signing a contract with United.
They don't know any thing more than us and if that was all involved we wouldn't need a holding statement, 10 mins could have sorted all that out surely

Wait, are there still actually reporters at OT now? What are they gonna do? Camp out there in case Fergie or Gill tries to sneak back at night

Hectic, Sir Alex did mention that the door was still open, for a player like Wayne if he wants at his press conference.

But I do agree, the damage has been done, time for all of us to move on, even if some of us are regretting the decisions made earlier.

Great last paragraph 'As for the man himself, he should ask the Lech Poznan fans arriving in Manchester on Thursday to watch their team play City in the Europa League if he is leaving for a bigger pond. Apparently, the first thing they did was take a guided tour of Old Trafford.'

:D

Don't want to bring up another Gerrard comparison, but my Liverpool friends were totally against his u-turn initially and I can only assume more were not that I looked on RAWK(but BBC comments were pretty nuts iirc) or SSN was as intense then, but they definitely despised him for those couple of days as much as we do here, he was coming off a CL win, not a year without the league/cl and said the team just weren't capable as well. Didn't take them long to forget tbh -_-

It can only be one of three things though really. Contract of some kind to at least stay until the summer, some other team has moved VERY quickly or somekind of suspension. Anything else wouldn't require a delay, it doesn't take numerous meeting to make a statement that confirms what has been said and pleases both parties....they could semi-merge the two statements already mentioned.

The damage had been done..... only because Ferguson chose to lambast Rooney in public....

It's a moot point anyway since my whole perception of this is based around Sir Alex having already decided on the outcome before that interview. I believe that he is simply trying to maintain a better image for United as a club.

The SSN reporter at the ground seemed very confident that they were just trying to clear the statement before transfer listing 'amicably' so I'd say he's been given the nod that it's more about finding a decent solution so as not to make it more difficult than it needs to be than any possibility he'll stay.
That's rubbish I would say tbh. Sky are just desperate to get some reward for standing outside OT all day. None of the journos are saying anything. United said more will be known in a few days.

Surely they did not need to be locked in meetings all day with lawyers and Rooney's reps just to agree on a "amicable" handling of the situation.

10 years ago, I'd have said no way. But Fergie has mellowed a bit and he has got a soft spot for Rooney. I just wouldn't say never, if there's true regret.

Can't see it happening at all. Yesterday most of us were convinced today would be when we announced an end to all this, more importantly, the end of Rooney at United. All that's happened today is that we've been told to wait, as a resolution has not been met, to me, that means we haven't reached a position where we can completely announce his exit.

From what's been said by from United's perspective, and the way this was handled by Rooney at the start, and the carefully planned response from Sir Alex, shows no way of a way back in. If there was any hope of a resolution, I can't believe Sir Alex would have gone ahead with that press conference, I saw that act as the exit of Rooney himself, confirmed or not. Surely it's gone far past the point where we could take him back, it would be damaging to the team, the club and the way in which United would want to be perceived as a club of our stature.

We've stood by our decisions time and time again, no player is bigger then the club. No-one before has managed to challenge the clubs integrity like Wayne has, considering his circumstance as well, so why would this be the time to go back on that? Obviously Wayne could offer a hell of a lot to us, we've seen over the years how he's bettered us as a team, but to what extent is that worth, with the bigger picture in mind?
Yes my thoughts exactly. No way back for me. The non monetary price wed be paying to keep him would be catastrophic. Take the blow on the pitch and strengthen the team whenever possible. Not a huge loss short term mind you, his form on the pitch has been as woeful as it has off the pitch.

He also said he expected Rooney to be a pro and respect the club, hours later his p.r team released a statement about how shite the squad is and we'll never win anything again. Respect.

I think the only way that Rooney could possibly come out of this is to come out and say something along the lines of:-

"I'm sorry. As you know, I have had major problems off the pitch in recent months and these have caused me to go a bit mental. I lost sight of what is important for a time there but I have come to realise over the last few days the enormity of the mistake I had made.

I have sacked that arsehole Stretford and have asked Neville Neville to represent me in future.

I ask that the fans give me another chance. I will make it up to you with my performances on the pitch - even if it takes me for the rest of my playing days."

He could then perhaps kiss the badge, wipe a tear from his eye and wobble his bottom lip a bit.

I'm a softie too and I think that might do for me.

If he did go to City, would he be able to bring in more City fans so they can actually fill their stadium? It's pretty bare at the minute.

Sadly if he does stay that is exactly the kind of crap he's going to come up with.

I don't want him anymore, the damage is done. Even if it was just a ploy to get a bigger contract, he's completely taken the piss and I'll never respect the guy again.

Has Wenger spoken on the Rooney issue?

I really like the idea of League managers coming out in support of Ferguson of late. Shows how much people think of Ferguson in relation to how little they think of Rooney.

I personally think this is Rooney just trying to get the most out of his last big contract. He hasn't burned any bridges. All he's said is that the club wasn't prepared to give him the assurances he wanted about the future of the club. Rooney may be considering his options, but I also think he has left a path back for himself with the club. If he signs a new 5 year deal tomorrow, he'll be forgiven just like Rio Ferdinand was and just like Gerard was with Liverpool. I agree he's acting like a cnut, but my money would still be on him staying.

You had respect for Rooney? How and why? I liked him as a United player but that is where it ended? Respect?

There is a time for considering your options - the day the new season starts isn't it.

In any case, what you're saying there assumes that Rooney is being honest when we all know he isn't.

Look at the logic here:-

Manchester United - 30 trophies in the last 24 years or something.

Manchester City - No trophies in the last 34 years or something.

"Ummm... I think City will offer me the best chance of winning trophies"

No. City will offer me the most money - pure and simple.

What a lot of people don't understand is that if Rooney signs for Manchester City, he will be playing for them in the future, not the past.
