Basel dropped 3 at the back lately, they've been playing 4-2-3-1. So I guess it's less likely we'll feature 3 at the back, unless Mourinho wants a really quiet controlling game. Without both Pogba and Matić, as you suggest, it might be the only way to get it.
We have several options to choose from for this game that anything is possible. Won't be surprised if Mourinho gives Pogba the first 45 minutes to give him full fitness then sub him during HT.

No reason whatsoever to take risks in this 1. I wouldn't play Pogba or Ibra altough i'd give Rojo some game time. Get in, get the job done and prepare for Brighton on Saturday.

Someone mentioned the state of the pitch is far from perfect, so I'm wondering…

Besides, after such a good win and performance, I wouldn't mess too much with the team/formation, no matter than we only need a point.

Not worried about this game in the slightest. Basel have shown little to worry us, we'll win a comfortable but boring game.

    FC Basel 0 - 2 Man United
    Rashford, Mata.

Dead rubber away game? How exciting.
We should go for the win though, to increase our coefficient.

Rojo as leftback, please God, spare us! I know, Mourinho might want to give him minutes there first…

Very much agree with the rest, except I don't think Mourinho will rest (they don't need it, really) both Matić and Pogba.

I fear Rojo at left-back is an evil we're going to have to endure until either he cements his place at centre-back again or someone nails down the left-back spot. The former seems more likely, although Young's form has been reasonably encouraging.

I think Young nailed it already. And you seem to be forgetting Blind. Hopefully, Mourinho doesn't remember at all Rojo playing leftback in his life. It would probably ease him in to feature 3 at the back, though. Also, Lindelöf's risk is lower in that too.

Definitely think this would be a good game to rest Matic but Mourinho doesn't ever seem to give him a break.

I'm not sure he's ready to start a game yet, I mean, physically. He seemed drained after having played just 15'.
Lions don't recover like humans though :).

You're probably right. I'm keen for Lukaku not to play a full 90 in a game we don't need to win and to get Zlatan minutes, but if the latter isn't up to it yet we could use Martial/Rashford up top for at least some of the game.

Take a 0.0 with no injuries, think we should rest big hitters on the bench.I'm more concentrated on the league for now. We will top the group I think.

    Gomes on for Fellaini
    Rashford on for Zlatan

What makes you think Gomes will get minutes?

One of the early clubs captains was Joan Gamper, who later founded FC Barcelona in Spain.
Wow, I had no idea. Read up on him a little and he seems like an absolutely fascinating personality. Thanks for bringin him to my Attention.

We don't really have anything to play for in this game so I expect a few players to be rested but the squad that will be there will want to win this game as well, it's not in Mourinho's character to throw away games.

I would say that Rojo , Pogba and Ibra will start this game, to get some minutes in.
Not sure about Pogba starting, I think we need to manage him carefully from now on and given the chance rest him as he just came back from muscle related injury rather than ACL, which is the case with Rojo and Pogba. Also, he demonstrated on Saturday that he is not rusty at all and doesn't need time to hit the ground running.

Hope so but the line up for this game is going to be again a tough call. We will probably see the same blood bath as the predictions for the Newcastle game.

He just had two weeks of rest during the internationals. why would he need rest ?

Him and Pogba should play all the games till new year, they won't play the last game of the CL nor the LC game, so that should be enough rest for them. They are our main players and each PL game is a must win and this CL game could seal the top position for us rendering the last game without importance.

Take Matic & Lukaku off at 60 mins for Pogba & Ibra. Or we can rest Pogba altogether and bring on Rashford then switch two a 2 man midfield. Rojo on for Lingard then switch to a back 3 - that's if we're winning.

    Group A: CSKA Moskva (6 points) v Benfica (0)*, Basel (6) v Manchester United (12)

    • Man. United will qualify (as group winners) with a draw. Their progress will be confirmed if CSKA do not win.
    • Basel will be through if they win and CSKA lose due to better head-to-head.
    • Benfica must win and hope Basel lose to stay in contention for a top-two place. If they fail to win they will be confirmed in fourth.
So, CSKA faces Benfica almost three hours earlier than us and, if the Russians don't win, we're qualified even before starting to play. Mourinho might decide on a different team if that happens. Anyone knows how earlier do the teams have to be officially declared?

See your point. Leaving a player or 2 out doesn’t necessarily mean giving them a rest but also avoids unnecessary injuries.
