With our injuries we shouldn't be starting anyone expected to start against West Ham. We've got plenty of players needing game time.

I think we will play a relatively strong 11... people haven't play many games and don't need a rest... plus momentum is important. I think we will have a bench with garner and gomes to see mins. Greenwood hopefully to start and hopefully up top

Agree 100%. People who call for 4-5 academy players to start are living in a dream land. Astana are not going to be pushovers - they are probably comparable to a decent Championship team, full of tough, experienced eastern European internationals. I expect the starting lineup to include 4-5 first team players, 4-5 fringe players and 1-2 academy players like Greenwood, Tuanzebe or Chong, who already had a few sub appearances under their belt. If the game is done and dusted with 20 minutes to go, we might see couple more kids get some minutes, hopefully Gomes and Garner.
Think there be a maximum of three academy players in the team, possibly Gomes, Greenwood and Chong. Romero, Tuanzebe and Fred are certs to start, with Jones and possibly Rojo also in the line up. If Ole thinks Williams is up for a start, then Chong may well be on the bench. Garner may be on the bench, and Ramazani could feature in the future if he keeps up his good form. De Gea, Lindelof, Maguire, McTominay, James and Rashford should be rested, although several maybe on the bench. Matic may get another run, as the pace should be slower than the PL, Lingard also could get a run out if fit.

People who don't want to see 3-4 youngsters involved should have a look back at what Arsenal and Chelsea did with their own youngsters in last season's EL group stage.

    • Arsenal beat Qarabag 3-0 away with Guendouzi and Smith-Rowe scoring.
    • Nketiah, Smith-Rowe and Willock all started in the 3-0 away win against Vorskla. Two of them scored. Saka came on in the 68th minute.
    • Hudson-Odoi started and scored in the 4-0 home win against PAOK. Ampadu came on after 63 mins.
    • They both started in the 2-2 draw away to Fehervar. McEachran made the bench.
No reason why we can't do something similar against a poor side at home.

Greenwood, Gomes, Chong, Garner and Williams all need to be involved. Even if only 2-3 of them start. Tuanzebe should definitely start.
I posted this in the newbie thread earlier.

If our young lads can’t perform against this level of player at home, it says a lot about their quality or ability to transfer their skill set to senior football.

This is the game that I have no issue to see Lingard, Mata & Matic on the pitch & combined with youth players like Chong, Gomes & Greenwood.

    Romero
    Bissaka Axel Maguire Rojo
    Matic Fred
    Chong Mata Gomes
    Greenwood

    • If Dalot is fit then i’ll Play him over Bissaka.
    • I’ll keep Maguire in there as a leader & playing from the back.
    • Fred needs more minutes for match fitness so he can start in the weekend.
    • Don’t mind to see Martial for match fitness so he can be ready in the weekend.

When did he say Martial would be ready? Wonder if he might start him to get some minutes under his belt.

Can’t decide on what line up.
    Romero
    Bissaka Tuanzebe Jones Young
    Matic Fred
    Greenwood Lingard Gomes
    Martial
Although I feel like he might start James so he gets European football under his belt early doors.

All these people playing Matic on Thursday in CDM have got totally the wrong idea. Astana will come to OT to park the bus and, maybe, steal an away goal. We don't need to play a safe CDM who'll pass it back to our CBs. This would, in fact, be a really bad idea. We want CDMs feeding the ball forward, not back. When they're packing 11 on their side of the pitch, we can't score a goal when the ball's in our half.

    I'd like to see:

    Romero
    Young Tuanzebe Jones Rojo
    Fred Matic
    Lingard Gomes Chong
    Greenwood
    ---
Grant; Dalot, Lindelof; Andreas, Garner; Mata, Rashford

However, I think it might be a little bit stronger than this, or at least maybe see Wan-Bissaka and James in the 18. They don't have much (if any) European experience and while this isn't exactly the biggest European night to throw them into, it could be a starting point. With the injuries we have though, we should be trying to rest the majority of the starting XI that will face West Ham. Eg. de Gea, Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, McTominay, James, Rashford. Hopefully, Pogba & Martial can come straight back in for the West Ham game. If they are ahead of schedule though, it wouldn't surprise me to see them benched here as well.

We should be comfortably winning this game regardless of the starting XI we field.

Hope Gomes plays. Contract is up soon and unless he plays games he will be off which will be tragic as he has some talent
Yeah agreed. I hope we manage to get him to sign a new contract before January. Same goes for some of our other youngsters.

Don't think we'll see this but this is the team I'd go for, there's enough experience in there as Rashford can't be counted as a kid anymore given the amount of top level football he's played, and Romero, Jones, Rojo, Matic and Fred are all seasoned pros.

Who is Wellens? What type of midfielder is he?

If Ole doesn’t play Gomes in this game, he never will play Gomes.

So basically no Pogba, Martial, Shaw and James?

Based on that training squad I'm going with: Romero; Dalot, Tuanzebe, Jones, Young; McTominay, Fred, Lingard; Rashford, Greenwood, Chong. With Gomes, Garner to come on (no idea about the 3rd sub).

Assuming that only one of Gomes or Chong will start, both could be on the bench though. With Greenwood starting, Ole might not just put them all in together though I hope we do at least 2 of the 3, if not all 3. Only Greenwood would be a bit disappointing tbh.

I don't think they're thinking about it tactically - just wanting Matic to play against the shit teams rather than the PL games.

Well he can sit there and cover and make it a back 3 with Tuanzebe and Jones pushed up to the halfway line and Young and Bissaka can go forward.
@jderbyshire many probably realise if that is their tactic to counter having a lump that will sit back protect and win most things in the air is probably a good idea allowing the others to be more progressive.

Any chances of Charlie Wellens being on the bench for Astana?
