I can see Rooney starting this up top.. transitioning to a bench player means playing in efl cup and europa league games and being rested for Premier League. Obviously the risk is he scores and gets back in the team, but if we want to use this to rotate, then Ibra and peobably rashford should be rested so he comes in. Unless memphis starts up front with lingard and young on the wings.
It's a real mess when we have to worry about one of our players scoring but that is the risk, I remember his hat-trick against Bruge padding his awful displays out in the eyes of several for a few months. Northampton are 2 divisions below us, he should be able to put them to the sword if he plays.

I hope Rooney plays actually. Drop him for the Leicester game.

Use this game to try a midfield combination.

That's the thing though. I hope he plays because on one hand it'll be a sign that he won't be a starter anymore, but on the other hand, they are in the 3rd league so you would think any striker starting up front for United would score a couple of goals here. If he does that, then you can bet that he'll start the Leicester game. Of course, if he plays like shit again then he's basically done here.. but it's a risk.

    I don't know what's better:

Full strength squad, who can use this as a training match and opportunity to gel

Fringe players who can get some game time and hopefully put pressure on the first team regulars who are playing dogshit.

If he puts in a couple goals fine - he's still a forward and capable of scoring against Tier 3 opposition. He's still behind Ibra and Rashford as a striker.

As for midfield, he should be nowhere near it. Mourinho has already said as much.

Hopefully we can create a chance or two and get at least a draw. Relying on individual magic to win you games does not always work out.

I wouldn't be surprised at this either. Think he will score too which will turn the media back on his side. He has a tenancy to do that.

Got a feeling we might see Ashley Young at LB aswell tomorrow.

I wonder how Mourinho thinks about our current fitness. Are we in need of match training for our assumed best players, or do they need a break? Will be interesting to see.

The exception is probably Pogba though, who hasn´t had a preseason. I really hope he need games, not rest. The latter would be a bit worrying.

I´m hoping to see Carrick, and Mkhitaryan would be fun to see. Not sure about his injury-status though.

I could see Mou starting Young in a 3-5-2

    DDG
    Bailly Smalling Blind
    Valencia Herrera Pogba Young
    Rooney*
    Zlatan Rashford
    * Forgot we have a Wayne..

Rooney should be starting the league cup games only so they make him look half decent, he gets the goal record and any substandard performances have minimal impact on the league and serious competitions. Jose can then palm him off come January.

Not keen on playing reserves in this game

Whenever teams are going through a slump throwing fringe players at the situation rarely works, a few of the first team players should play to earn their spot in the side

Northampton have been difficult to beat so don't imagine it will be easy at all

    This makes sense.
However, don't forget that the Brugge game was over a year ago and since then Rooney has got worse.
I am not sure if Rooney would be able to put Brugge to the sword again, as he did a year back.

Much as I hate to admit, I see us scraping a 1-0 or even drawing 1-1 and going to a replay. Hope I'm wrong!

After what Mou said on the weekend. I can bet my left testicle that Ashley Young will start both this and Leicester. New managers seem to love him. LVG had him playing like a super star in his first season. Maybe the guy has a very good attitude. He might drop shaw My team.

    DDG
    Valencia Baily Smalling Blind

    TFM (Carrick is more realistic)

    Harera POgba

    Miki Zlatan Rashford

    Maybe tomorrow. I'm in Okayama.
Just found out we need a new roof on the house.
Could this week get any worse?

I just can't help thinking the N/A in the OP form guide is all too appropriate for the club atm

Hope you all in Japan will be alright! But I really don't think it will be worse. It should be a comfortable, if boring win.

I know some are still hurting from the last game. But 5-0 Northampton . Come on.

My team for tonight would be

DDG, TOFU MENTAL, SMALLING, BLIND, DARMIAN, MATA, CARRICK, SCHNEIDERLIN, HERRERA, MEMPHIS, IBRA

I don't usually like Mata on the right, but in this game we can use him to pack the midfield and dominate the ball. The lower league teams aren't as good at sitting back and soaking up pressure, and it'll get their noisy crowd quiet.

If things aren't going to plan then bringing on either Lingard/Young on the right and subbing Schneiderlin and pushing Mata into CM should work OK.

I really hope we start this like a house on fire, we need a quick start after the last 3 labouring matches. Get the game won early and rest the guys we need for Saturday. We need this done like a military operation. I hope Jose goes into this absolutely angry and gets the team fired up. We need to play with fire in our bellies.

I'm not a massive fan of the 4-4-4 formation.

I'd start Rooney on the hope he gets a knock or suspension for the Leicester game.

Rashford up front, TFM somewhere, maybe a start for Memphis too. Otherwise not fussed.
