Are people calling this defensive because of the 3 CB’s?

A year or 2 ago Martial and Rashford were our future and we were all looking forward to watch them do great things at United as time goes on. Fast forward a few years in the future with Mourinho in charge and they can't even get 2 games in a row with our main striker out injured.

Apparently it's now commendable on Mourinho part to drop them after one poor game in which they play after being sidelined mostly for a long time. People are actually condoning this sort of handling of our prospects. I swear this crap happening anywhere else and we'd all be laughing how Mourinho is ruining yet other yongsters but because he's here now some people are just lapping up his nonsenses.

    God help us all.

I remember a time when people actually waited until the match started before crying. Those were the days.

Just shows what Mourinho thinks of Martial and Rashford.

Actually, if I going to criticise on anything for those attaching choices, it will be the double standard of dropping Bailly because of the World Cup excuse, but not playing Martial over Sanchez for the same reason (Martial should make the squad anyway but you never know on current form).
Bailly had no minutes since he got dropped. Martial still started other games and got subbed minutes. Him to perform is his own problem for him to stake a consistent run in the team

I'm liking the lineup. Something that, especially after the Arsenal and Watford game, I wanted Jose to experiment with more.

We scored 8 goals in those two games, and looked really exciting going forward, which has been a rarity this season.

I would have made a few personnel changes to the team tonight, but as I said, I'm looking forward to us playing the 3142.
    I don't see any strikers :(

The Caf are unhappy with the lineup.

4-0 United win on the cards.
That is my only hope.. Though it feels like yet another trial by Jose on the formation as well as people. Kinda confusing when the manager still cant decide what is his best line up.

I've been wanting to see a 3 at the back for a while now, only with more attacking options. I think this formation suits our forwards more than the 4-3-3. This lineup is a bit dead though, would have liked to see Martial in a central role.

I usually don't moan in here but surely, surely he could have started two youngsters in a largely worthless match to show them trust rather not starting them in a two striker formation.

I think it’s the fact we don’t have a forward, Lingard is one of our so called attacking players, McTominay is in midfield oh and yes we have 5 defenders!

So much negativity around the selection. It's as if we haven't learned over the years.

Hard working group. Watch Alexis and Lingard go riot . Hat-trick and brace. Our first 5 goal haul since when?

Martial was outstanding for us the few times we've played 3 at the back so I'm not sure about being benched for this. It's difficult to build momentum when we don't give players chances in the positions they've shown good form in. Bailly misses out because we've got to give other defenders chances to stake claim for World Cup but Martial who is in the same position doesn't play over Lingard who's guaranteed a spot or Sanchez who has the summer completely off. Don't understand the logic there.
It's almost as if Mourinho is a bit of a prick.

Sanchez scored 30 goals for Arsenal last season as a striker.

People might be surprised by him as the focal point, he's quite good.

I agreed but it's largely a match of no consequence, would it have really harmed if he had shown some trust in two young players and given them another opportunity.
Well it would let them know they can slack off and still get a game for one thing.

They're young teaching them standards is no bad thing

No. Actually I've called for 3 at the back because we've played our best football with it this season. The problem is lack of speed in attack with the absence of Martial/Rashford. One of Herrera/McTominay doesn't need to play.

After losing that first game and doing feck all? Can't be surprised.
Martial and Rashford were nothing short of disgraceful on Friday. They don’t deserve a place. You could say that about a few in that XI but they were among the very worst.

Looking forward to seeing Sanchez in this role. Utterly destroyed West Ham in this ground last season from that position, might be his best.
Pogba was as shit as anyone else in that game. Why is he starting currently?

Looks like a typical Jose style revenge for players who did not follow his orders in his opinion

Horrible lineup, I know they performed badly in the previous match but this is a mostly non consequential, what harm would it have been if Martial and Rashford were given another chance?
I think the formation would have suited Martial and Rashford more than Sanchez and Lingard too.

Actually, if I going to criticise on anything for those attaching choices, it will be the double standard of dropping Bailly because of the World Cup excuse, but not playing Martial over Sanchez for the same reason (Martial should make the squad anyway but you never know on current form).
He won't. France squad announcement is in 7 days but RMC say this with regards to the attacking options:

In attack, the coach faces headaches. Back in full form with Chelsea, Olivier Giroud will be retained. Like Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappé. On the left, Dimitri Payet's latest fine performances could allow him to accompany Thomas Lemar. On the right, Florian Thauvin should be adventurous. Appointed to the UNFP Trophies as the best player, he has an outstanding season with 20 goals and 11 assists in 33 games in Ligue 1. Ousmane Dembélé, who has only 10 starts with Barça this season, should also be on the trip in Russia.

    Lacazette in balance
The question for the staff of the Bleus is the possibility of taking a second advanced striker. Alexandre Lacazette adapted well to the Premier League where he played 31 games with Arsenal for 14 goals scored. Competition Wissam Ben Yedder , scorer Wednesday against Real Madrid with Sevilla FC and convened last March, is also in reflection.
No mention of Martial. Will probably be:

Dembele, Giroud, Griezmann, Lacazette, Lemar, Mbappe, Thauvin and either Payet or Fekir.

Pretty sure he had a little bit more of an attacking system feeding him though than what we are lined up with today.

Of course Caf experts are unhappy, based on their experience playing FIFA, we are gonna lose 0-4 with this lineup.

Only 2 attacking players might have something to do with it.
Pogba will be playing further forward. It’s likely he will even drift out wide left quite a bit (which he was very good at earlier in the season) with Sanchez up top.

We all claim Pogba to be in an incredibly talented footballer restricted by Mourinho - this is his chance to prove it. He is the 3rd attacker.

Pogba should be nowhere near the team by that logic. Agree that Martial/Rashford disappointed. But Jose can show them who is the boss later. It was a different thing if we had Lukaku. In his absence, at least one of Martial/Rashford have to start for pace. Especially if the manager is going to again change the formation to something new.

The logic is pretty simple. Jose wants Martial to agitate for a move so that he can move him on without getting all the blame

or maybe they have some knowledge as well. Feel like numerous times we have questioned lineups going into a game and been right about it. Pretty much any game with darmian comes to mind. Or the home leg to sevilla. Or pretty much the whole season we have had young/valencia at fullbacks have we known we would struggle to create from out wide and be all packed into the middle. Or games with mata at RW leading to packed, slow moving attacks through the middle 10x10 square. Hell even a lot of our bigger wins where from adjustments to a bad first half that a lot saw coming from formations and personnel. I hope im wrong and we win 5-0 tonight, but would be very surprised.

You know he played for Arsenal right? They haven't played good attacking football for several years now. They were a dysfunctional team last season that was bailed out by Sanchez over and over.

It is crazy that we are at the end of the season and we still don't know what our best 11 is. fecking shambles
We do know our best 11, but half the forum are up in arms that their favourite player(s) arent in it :D

This is a meaningless game, and the team for the FA cup final is pretty much known barring injuries.
