As for the alliances, the Reformation is still under way, so some alliances could be split up. Even more so if we get a League War, which is basically the game's version of the Thirty Years War, with Europe dividing to support the Protestants or the Catholics in the Holy Roman Empire.

@Eboue (top) and @RedSky (bottom) have made it to the New World. Not on their own, but either through map knowledge spreading naturally, or by purchasing some maps from Organic Potatoes. It's a start, though. (Apparently map knowledge spreads easier if the countries have good relations, and Eboue and Organic Potatoes like each other. Not sure how RedSky got in on the action, but he did.)
