Antonio Valencia missed United's last two games of the season after injuring his ankle against Tottenham Hotspur. He arrived back in Ecuador earlier this week in a wheelchair after undergoing surgery on his right ankle. According to Ecuadorian media, he'll be immobile for three weeks before returning to United's medical staff for a check-up. He's expected to be out of action for up to two months. (NC)

Antonio Valencia, fresh from an outstanding first season at Manchester United, has endured the surgeon’s knife in a bid to cure an ankle problem. The Ecuadorian, who missed the final two games of the season, returned to his homeland to start a two month long rehabilitation programme before returning to Old Trafford in June.

With Ecuador just failing to reach the FIFA World Cup in South Africa this summer, Valencia underwent the surgery on his right ankle. The 23-year-old will wear a cast for three weeks and will only join United’s summer tour to North America and Mexico if the surgery heals to schedule.

Valencia made 49 appearances for United this season, scoring seven goals and contributing a further seven assists.

Meanwhile Michael Owen, who tore his left hamstring during the Carling Cup final at Wembley in February, is set to join up with United’s squad in the US on 12 July for pre-season training.

“The aim is to be doing everything with the lads on the first day of pre-season training,” said Owen, who remains in complete denial about his awful injury record.

“It was a shame to get the injury at Wembley. I thought it was a minor thing at first but it was obviously worse than that.

“But overall I was delighted with my first season at United. I was fit for 43 of the first 44 games.”

The former Liverpool striker scored nine times last season.

thats not the answer i was looking for

Citizenship? You mean becoming a citizen of the UK? He plays for Ecuador at a senior level so why is it relevant? Are there rules pertaining to being a EU player that I don't know about?

Hope we get him back fit enough to have a decent pre-season run out. He's a much better player than I took him for at first.

Agreed. Be interesting to have Valencia and Nani both fit and ready to go for the 1st game of the season. Big season for the pair of them, time to step it up lads and destroy Europe.

Good man:

"I want to stay at United for 10-15 years, even if Madrid or Barca want me"

This guy isnt appreciated enough. Maybe cos he's not your typical modern footballer looking for the limelight.

Those are definitely nice comments to see and he does come across as a player more likely to stick to them than the average footballer. I personally dont anticipate Madrid or Barcelona coming after him from now on but thats not the point.

Wait two seasons when they get tired of their current players and need new signings just to be themselves. He won't be answering the phone though.

Great man, he was a magnificent signing, and most of the people here said he wasn't good enough or he didn't have what it takes. Clearly he does, and he has turned out to be awesome.

Some more good news regarding Antonio!

In more positive news for United, meanwhile, right-back Gary Neville and winger Antonio Valencia have returned to full training following a calf injuries.

That's what I like to hear. Hope he can build on last season to bigger and better things.

He will need some games though, but as long as his fitness level is fine, he will soon hit top form.

I liked very much what i saw last season, he improved greatly during the season and I am sure he will continue so. Plus, he has developed a great understanding with Rooney

If he can continue to improve on last season, he's going to have a special year. I hope he can add some more goals.

Valencia needs to learn to use his left foot - not all the time, but just enough to keep defenders guessing. As it is, he had a great season with us, but as was the case with Ronaldo and many others, the defenders will be wisened to his tricks this time round. Any team that does their research will know that he is only ever going to use his right foot, and the defender can play accordingly.

I'm certain every fullback he was up against knew that, yet most of them couldn't handle him at all.

He didnt need his left foot last season though, clearly! Nah, I agree though, its something he needs to improve. However, what I liked what I saw at the end of last season was the increase of times he'd attempt to use it in comparison with the beginning of the season.

Yeah, people said that about Robben too.

Great player. Not being mentioned a lot this preseason but lets not forget he was awesome last year as well.
