I am mainly amazed that some people believe that the employer has no (legal) access to employees' communications.
A lot of posters comes from different countries which in turn have different privacy laws. Also people work in different sectors obviously also influence their view. Even judging by UK implementation of GDPR, it's still not as straightforward as some make it out to be, even if it does seem legal.

Amazing that City showed more class when we came in for Berrada, Pep's snide comments aside.

I don't understand why people are rushing to call him dumb. It's possible they just found the emails when they removed him from his position and then had access to his inbox.

It seems super weird from what I have read. Why would you ever bcc your work email from your personal?

Worst thing about them is how they keep trying to force a rivalry with United for relevancy, to cling to something they want to become (off the pitch for now). In their minds, we're their biggest rivals. It's mental.

That said, if city do get correctly punished for the 115, I wouldn't be surprised if United and Newcastle do have a genuine rivalry in the next 5 years or so.

“Our” “fanbase” are hilarious at times. We have an uncorroborated tweet claiming something about Ashworth and it means the club, new ownership and Ashworth himself are failures and incompetent? People not willing to wait and find out the true situation when the arbitration happens, shoot from the hip and assume the worst, despite the fact the other party are part of the regime with a less than moral/honest approach to things.

I think its funnier to laugh at the wiseasses who like to pretend THEY are masters of the universe and can do no wrong.

Everyone does something this stupid at least once a day. Just that most of us aren't linked to the biggest club in world football.
Your comment has nothing to do with what I said.

I constantly have to argue with people on here who like to refer to these people as some sort of authority on truth and yet we see a feck-up here for which an intern would have been told off.

When we're in the middle of a huge transition and need to get moving yesterday, this guy goes and does something this monumentally stupid, that's inexcusable for me.

What can the Court of Arbitration do? Do they have the power to set a fixed compensation sum? The problem all along has been that the sum was ridiculous. If a fairer one can be agreed then everyone should be happy & move on.

It's a clever strategy. They can't really leverage the Sunderland rivalry until they return to the PL, if they ever do.

Why do you think the UAE bought City when there were much 'better' investments that wouldn't struggle so much with FFP to be had? Because you get a global local derby (minimum two a year) and you sell off the back of an established brand, "welcome to manchester" etc. It's also why they have bought Girona because their local derby is Barcelona.

Newcastle don't need to cheat as City have to be relevant. As bad as Ashley was for them he left them in great nick for FFP and they have a decent overseas fanbase (a bit on the older side now) mixed with extremely strong home support/matchgoing fans and large stadium. Their recruitment has always been relatively good I would say, even when they started raiding Ligue 1 and signing guys like Cabaye, Sissoko, Remy, Tiote (he was Belgian league I think) I think it's Alan Carr's dad (yes the same Alan Carr) who was running their recruitment and doing a decent job. I just wish they weren't owned by Saudi, had a soft spot for them until then.

Surely Ashworth has sought legal advice over this sacked or resigned angle - and they clearly think he has a case.

I would say Newcastle leaking it to their mouthpieces with their slight on it, only shows that they are concerned he has a case as well?

Can't say I understand what the fuss is about. Changing jobs is a perfectly normal part of life, and part of that will involve sending messages to potential new employers or recruiters whilst still in contract with their current employer. To get angry about that is small time and something you only really hear about in sport, where insecurity about metaphorical dick size is rife. What difference does it make if you're sending the messages from a work email or sending them on linkedin.
your old employer won't find it

Based on the little I've read, if they say 5m and we pay 5m, Newcastle have no recourse.

I think that's what United are hoping for but this latest development with the botched tapping-up might throw a spanner in the works.

Why, what rights do Newcastle have in this situation, under UK law?
No idea about UK law (I used to work in Germany), but it is allowed if there is a concrete suspicion of breach of contract or criminal offences. The former would be suspected here. It also depends entirely on what specific rules the company has in place, such as personal conduct and employee handbooks. Then there is certainly a data protection officer and the compliance department, which can also look into things if they become suspicious.

Edit: ALWAYS assume that everything that is written on company channels is saved and can be retrieved.

The fact that these guys haven't even yet stepped foot in Carrington and there's so much excess baggage to carry already is putting me off.

They are delusional if they think we pay this up.
We have a way better chance to just sit there and wait for the outcome of the arbitration
We want Ashworth to start as soon as possible and Newcastle want him off the books as they're in the process of hiring a new director themselves. I could be wrong but feel like the two sides will eventually come to an agreement unless Newcastle really are holding out for an unrealistic fee then we'll just let the arbitration play out.

Agreed.

The line in Luke Edwards piece about discussions just prior to the arbitration is quite telling.

Meet in the middle at around £5m? Or lower fee and start after the summer window would be my guess.

Yeah there wouldn't be discussions taking place before the arbitration meeting if there wasn't a desire on both sides to get something done. It all comes down to the compensation fee.

Luke Edwards is just a flimsy mouthpiece for Newcastle, I'd take anything he says with a gigantic iceberg of salt.

The 'did he/ did he not do it' baggage? Is he a clumsy idiot or is he victimised? Has he been sacked or has he quit?

Find out more on the next episode.

Genuinely bollocks.
I find it amazing that you want us to walk away from hiring one of the best football directors out there over an email that nobody actually cares about. Tapping up directors and executives happens all the time in football. Newcastle are only making a big deal out of this because they're bitter that Ashworth wants to join us and they're trying to milk a few million out of us.

Is he one of the best? I don't know. Never heard of him before he was linked to us. Tapping up happens all the time but it obviously must be kept a secret. How or why this got leaked out is anybody's guess and everyone's clearly guessing right now. In addition, his job realistically probably requires a shitload of tapping up players.

First impressions count, and his first impression on me is that he is potentially capable of a monumental feck-up.

I'm not necessarily wanting to walk away, and we are probably too far into the deal to do that. But if this is sign of Sir Jim's new 'high standards' of operations, it's a bit of a joke. If I was Bob in the basement IT department, my desk ain't getting cleaned.

No way

We all saw this coming. Guys at this level talk to each other and I’m sure Freedman has been onto Ashworth.

Newcastle is an attractive job, but you don’t want to be tied to them and their pettiness when a big club comes calling.

Is it attractive for this specific role though, when it seems like your hands are tied by Eddie Howe having his key men already in place. Ashworth for instance was supposedly outside the trusted group.
