Television Game of Thrones (TV) • The watch has ended

To be honest I don't really care who dies or doesn't anymore. I have had few strong favourites in the show but like the show overall they've spiralled down to "not interested" levels. Same thing happened with The Lost, great fecking show totally ruined in the last two seasons.

I’m with you. This show lost its quality after season 6.

Season five was the worst of the lot. Season six was a big improvement but still nowhere near the quality of 1-4, maybe on par with 2.

I've been re-watching S7 with the missus to get her up to speed and it's just pure shite. Great battle sequence in episode four but it's all over the place apart from that, and the time travel really is ridiculous. I think that's why I liked the newest episode so much because it doesn't have that sense of extreme urgency and moving things along and instead does what GoT always did best and focuses on characters and their interactions.

You speak the truth. Personally I didn’t like the last episode so much, only because some of the acting was pants, the dialogue wasn’t very good, and it came on the back of episode one which was just another reunion episode. Would’ve been better served in my opinion to have done episode one and two reunions interspersed with scenes of the White Walkers slaughtering their way through the North to get to Winterfell. Really build up a greater sense of their relentless ruthlessness, and increase the tension. The juxtaposition with the reunions at Winterfell, would’ve given the viewer more foreboding of the impending deaths of “beloved” characters to come.

Kit Harrington recently came out and said a big feck you to anyone who doesn’t like season 8, because they put their heart and soul into it. Thought it was a weird thing to say before it aired. But seems obvious to me that there is probably a general sense in the cast that it’s not actually very good.

I wasn't really expecting much from season eight anyway. Most of the good actors are dead or in the background now. The children have all grown up into pretty terrible actors and are now at the forefront, which doesn't help. I don't really think the dialogue has actually gotten much worse either, they just have way shitter actors doing it which makes it much more difficult to pull off.

Mostly I'm looking forward to the epic battles and getting an ending out of the whole thing (which I likely never will from the books). And all that's been good about the last few seasons is those epic battle scenes anyway (apart from S6 which had a good overall arc and a great finale).

So... I asked this before and didnt get an answer, what specifically was off dialogue wise in the last couple of episodes. Ive seen people say it was cringe-fest ad other things, but what in particular?

The bit where they pronounced almond as "armond".

Compare the two mate, I'm no writer but the difference in quality is incredible -

From 3mins onwards in this one

The first is a great mix of introspection, emotion, sharp dialogue, lines like "How long can hate hold a thing together?".

Now this season you've got banalities like "You're the most arrogant man I ever met.... I like this". It's like primary grade writing.

Whilst the writing and dialogue is better in the first few seasons, it does make sense given most of that would have years and years behind it whilst the latter seasons have maybe less than a year.
But its not as bad as say 'the bad pussy' line. But at the same time, its not something I listen to and think 'omg, this show is doomed' as we hear bad things scene to scene.

I don't agree with the show being ruined in the last two seasons but what I do believe the show rather intentionally set out to make just about every character double sided, someone that has something for and against them. Imho that's the strength of where we re at now, rather than a weakness. Most characters are floating in a gray area...that is also why I thought s8e2 was so powerful: for a moment you re briefly reminded who they all are and the journey they made over the seasons. There are enough shows with definitive good and bad guys.

So the dialogue is bad but what part of Aryas acting is brutal? Cant say I noticed but would like to know so I can educate myself on it a bit.

People don't like characters that dont show much emotion, Arya is a bit terminator like at times, very cold and only really shows emotion around family. People assume it's bad acting when the reality is it's just that her character is pretty dull now. I mean shes a badass, but the whole "i'm really dangerous because i'm treating everyone like they're beneath me" arc is a bit meh. It's the same with Bran, I mean how the feck is that lad meant to make the character interesting when he's basically an emotionless cripple. I feel sorry for them, I don't really get why Bran has to behave like he does, he's like that "i've seen shit" dog.

Anyway, on this whole 'use bran as bait' plan.

Why would the Night King personally risk his life to kill him? He has Winterfell surrounded by an army of undead soldiers. Bran is in a wheelchair, he's not going anywhere.

Just win the battle and Bran is dead, you can kill him whenever you want when the castle is taken. It's not like Bran is some priceless commander all he does is sit there and break bad news.

I think the point of Bran is that being this somewhat omniscient seer he had been elevated beyond his former self and left his original character behind.

Arya however became too much of a machine, which is probably why they gave her the scene with Gendry, to make her human again.

I find the robotic bran a bit unnecessary. Makes him come across a bit of a cnut now, whereas the old man three eyed raven he learned from did actually have some personality, likeability and a sense of humour to him. So not sure why the writers have turned bran into a flake.

I think it's probably because the guy is a hopeless actor.

Good point, to be fair.

Arya is more understandable to me - ive never really looked at her/Maisie Williams and thought "shite acting" when watching it. Emilia Clarke is worse for me - which is a great shame as she definitely had some great....assets... in the earlier seasons.

The original three eyed raven had charisma and wasn't some kind of spaced out druggie though which is what Bran comes across.

To be honest I don't remember the scenes with the original TER verbatim, but I think it's fairly obvious that Bran is not a character with great writing that's ruined by the actor, but rather deliberately awkward and detached.

He's had a massive data bump and it's taking time to defrag his hard drive.

I like the I know your deepest darkest secrets stares and the zinger one liners. I find him an interesting character.

As for Arya she was one of my favourite characters at the start of the show. I didn't like the No One period of her arc but love the new bad ass Arya.

Yeah they’ve holywooded the absolute shit out of it. Shocking writing

Isn't that a little selective? If I picked Littlefinger's "Play with her arse" scene from season 1 and compared it to Jaime and Olenna's scene from season 7, it would look the opposite.

I think the quality of the writing has dipped a little but I don't think it's fallen off a cliff like some claim.

That's what I thought at first, but every season the intros seem to have made it a point to only show things relevant to that episode or season. They never used the crossbow they said took down a dragon, right?

Also holy shit balls Wtf is wrong with u people and your weird obsession with the Arya scene. Go out and get laid or something.

Bronn used it on Drogon in season 7, that’s it though.

Makes sense I guess but as another poster just said, i dont see bad acting with arya but do with Bran. I sort of think the same. I agree, Bran could be acted so much better.

Well he's not doing the robotic drug induced coma kid by himself, it's the director and character that demands him reading his lines like an emotionless skeleton. It's just a bad character, cool concept but makes for a boring person. Should have made him a bit crazy rather than someone with zero charisma.

Let's not forget that even though Martin is a titan wordsmith, some of the writing in the books is pretty dire. With any medium there's always going to be problems from time to time. Hell, even Tywin has some pretty cumbersome dialogue in the books and show. But Tywin was played by Charles Fecking Dance. Jon Snow is played by the guy who has used his new found star power to deliver shit performances in Silent Hill: Revelation and Pompeii.

Plus, if you want truly poetic dialogue then go and watch Deadwood. Game of Thrones has always been exposition heavy with an emphasis on single line quotes that you could put on a t-shirt.

Why
Varys? He's not going to battle. He'll survive I reckon.
If he tells Tyrion his backstory and reveals some stunning secret about his past or who he is then I think minutes later he'll be fecked

Aye, it's a real problem that 3 of the main protagonists are played by wooden actors/actresses.

Kit Harrington, Emilia Clarke and Sophie Turner are very attractive people but they're barely even in the same profession as someone like Charles Dance, or even some of their current costars like Lena Headey or Coster-Waldau.

This is pretty much summed up by their work outside of GoT. As you say, Harrington has been awful in his other roles, Turner is dreadful in X-Men and Clarke was similarly shit in Terminator. They just don't have the ability to capture the audience like some of the great actors/actresses that this show has seen.

I agree. Basically, if a character's story arc is completed, like Brianne's was, they're fecked. Which is why I think people like Brienne, Greyworm, Jorah, etc are done next episode, and people like Jamie, Varys and other main, non-completed characters will survive. Basically if you finish your story then you are royally fecked.

Yeah there are a few actors a tier below others. Harrington, Bran, Danerys, and others are categorically in the lower tier. I think that Sansa improved as the series went on.

Charles Dance, Tyrion, Theon/Reek, Cersei and the old Tyrell woman are superb and a class above. And some of the one-season wonders were very good too, like Pedro Pascual, Ned Stark and Mark Addy.
