Less than half the field is playing to par, which means the course is plenty hard enough.
Rory just messed the 18th up to blow his good day.
yeah it’s definitely not easy, but it’s not difficult enough for top level players on their game. -8 should be nigh on impossible at a us open so that’s where the comments about it being easy are coming from. Half the field probably falls into the 300yard average drive length category, so they are hitting long irons for their second shot on par 4s and that’s where a lot of the bogeys are coming from, and those same players have had to hit 3 wood off the tee on the long par 3. There’s just too many long hitters now, but I do think the LACC will see to it that there aren’t any more -8 rounds this tournament… some of the places they can put those pins is just downright torture.
Also, Koepka winning with a score of +1 at a recent US open has got a lot of people thinking that should be the expectation of these tournaments, but the greens at shinnecock were so tough. Didn’t really see anyone land there ball within 20 feet of the flag and roll off the greens yesterday, they definitely seem “easy” to me in terms of being a world class player.
us open always just let’s the rough grow, so Sunday is going to be an incredible watch. Don’t think anyone will be calling it easy then.
