Right!? Would be such a great story.

Schauffele would be a great winner, too. Him blitzed, smoking a cigar, after the US won the Ryder Cup was 10/10 content.
I would be happy with either, but Rickie’s put a few more years in than Xander, he deserves one first.

Is that possible in round one?
Both blew it wide right into the barrancas on different holes. Somehow neither ball came to rest against a rock & Xander actually made his par.

Ugly tee shots both.

Now Rickie has it to six feet for a par & he made it. Don’t pay attention to anything leaderboard related I post going forward.

3 wood not bad from him either. He lands in the fairway all week, he wins this at a canter

Christ, Reddit full of people moaning about how easy the course is, only 39/150 players under par today at the moment.

Think the yanks like the US open to be stupidly difficult so they can pretend all US courses are hard and they're the bestest golfers in the world.

they aren’t wrong IMO, the greens are mostly pretty wide, very receptive today and a good number of holes the fairway bounces the ball onto the green. It’s only day 1 though, it’ll get much tougher

Less than half the field is playing to par, which means the course is plenty hard enough.

Rory just messed the 18th up to blow his good day.

Not really. We like it stupid difficult because it’s supposed to be the most challenging shot making tournament of the schedule.

It’s the same reason we love when the weather is awful at The Open. Because that’s supposed to be part of that specific tournament’s challenge.

Just close your eyes, forget your name
I didn't see much of the early coverage, but if the second half of R1 was anything to go by the host-broadcaster has literally more ads than golf. It was excruciating the fewer players (that they wanted to cover) were on course.

Shame for Rory at the last but good recovery all told.

The problem with Rory in recent weeks has been his final round, so while a good start is great, it's hard to get excited about his chances. Some might say it's been that way throughout his career, not just recently, but it's been especially bad the last few tournaments.

yeah it’s definitely not easy, but it’s not difficult enough for top level players on their game. -8 should be nigh on impossible at a us open so that’s where the comments about it being easy are coming from. Half the field probably falls into the 300yard average drive length category, so they are hitting long irons for their second shot on par 4s and that’s where a lot of the bogeys are coming from, and those same players have had to hit 3 wood off the tee on the long par 3. There’s just too many long hitters now, but I do think the LACC will see to it that there aren’t any more -8 rounds this tournament… some of the places they can put those pins is just downright torture.

Also, Koepka winning with a score of +1 at a recent US open has got a lot of people thinking that should be the expectation of these tournaments, but the greens at shinnecock were so tough. Didn’t really see anyone land there ball within 20 feet of the flag and roll off the greens yesterday, they definitely seem “easy” to me in terms of being a world class player.

us open always just let’s the rough grow, so Sunday is going to be an incredible watch. Don’t think anyone will be calling it easy then.

What’s everyone’s favourite ever golf shot?

steering away from the usual suspects, this never got enough attention. Absolutely sublime.
