I’ve seen all except CODA.

Least favourite (by far): Crash.

Favourite: Too difficult but it’s one out of Parasite, Birdman, Moonlight, Spotlight or No Country for Old Men.

Seen 17.

Favourite: Gladiator or No Country for Old Men

Least favourite: The Shape of Water (del Toro’s evolution from genius horror visionary to purveyor of dull Oscar bait has been such a disappointing career trajectory, imho)

Looking at that list, what’s striking is the divergence between box office hits and Oscar winners/nominees in the 2010s (you might call it the Marvel effect). But that trend seems to be reversing now, with Top Gun: Maverick getting a several nominations last year and Barbie and Oppenheimer dominating this year - all billion dollar movies.

I've only seen 4 - The King's Speech, The Departed, A Beautiful Mind, American Beauty.

Out of those, The Departed is my favourite as I like Leonardo Di Caprio and Matt Damon as actors.

I've not watched as many films as I should have over the years, though in the last couple of years I've made an effort to watch plenty of them. But a big part of that decision to catch up on older films is because I'm less interested in most of the modern movies or TV shows, and so most of the films I've been watching / re-watching have been pre-21st century (some are also Best Picture winners, but earlier than the years in the OP so don't count to the tally).

Seen them all apart from Crash (I was too young when it came out and have had no desire to watch it since).

My favourite is probably No Country for Old Men, that was generally an unusually strong year for Oscar-y type movies, and my least favourite would probably be Birdman although the Artist and Green Book, along with some others, aren't much cop either.

Seen all until the 2018, the year I stopped flying and therefore watching new films on a regular basis. Hard to pick but I'd say Argo or American Beauty are my favourites. The last four are all equally forgettable.

Looking at the chronological list you can see they get progressively more arty and progressively shitter.

Nah, they just get better. Also, how are Argo, 12 Years and Spotlight arty?

Not EEAAO, which is pretty much a standard action-comedy film albeit with some impressive special effects

I liked Moonlight, Birdman, 12 years and Parasite.
Didn't think much of A Shape of Water. GDT hasn't been great since Pan's Labyrinth, though his adaptation of Pinocchio was a step forward on form to some degree.

Must have been a average year for Departed to win. The original is far superior, and even that has issues.

Got to disagree on Moonlight, it is a beautiful film. The script, cinematography, acting and soundtrack are all great.

The movie ended too abruptly for my liking and I didn't care about the characters. Especially Mahershala Ali's character. How he won an Oscar for only 20 minutes screentime l don't know.

I actually prefer La La Land over Moonlight that year and we all know how that ended...

I'll give you Ali, he had a good role but I'm not sure it was Oscar worthy. However, the story, the way it was crafted into 3 different eras of the main character's life, the score was so beautiful, some of the shots like when the kid is being screamed at by his mother. That movie got me in the feels big time.

I've practically seen them all up until about 2015/2016 and then I seem to have stopped watching so many movies.

Least favourite was Return of the King. I don't get the love at all. I read all the books as a kid a couple do times but the movies were overly long and lost me by the end. I think I mostly enjoyed the first two. For the third one I wanted out of the cinema well before the end white out, black out fade out... Just piss off and finish the fecking film already.

I enjoyed Hurt Locker, King's Speech, Birdman, American Beauty and Gladiator was entertaining.

I've seen them all except for CODA (I had never even heard of it, somehow...), Chicago (no interest), The Shape of Water (not sure I'm interested), and Moonlight (on my list).

The choices are hard to make. Maybe I'll pick Birdman for favorite (cause it's fairly unique in this list) and No Country For Old Man as least favorite (I seem to have a blind spot there, but maybe I need to rewatch it now I've read the book).

Surprised so many people dislike Birdman. What did you not like about it?

I think that Oscar was basically for the trilogy, but yes: So. Many. Endings. Although I actually thought pt 2 was the worst: clearly an 'in-between' film, and clearly Jackson was also out of ideas on how to keep switching between the storylines (let's do another 'swooping in' shot!).
