Ighalo is good enough to be a bench option. He's honestly done well and I think it was a flaw in Oles management to not sub him in against Seville.
We'll see if he stays or goes in January but if we do sign Sancho the options for the striker position will be Martial/Rashford/Greenwood, and that might be sufficient if Greenwood continues his progression.

Ighalo is a funny one. It was like Ole was reluctant to put him on after the 3 month break. Was there something that happened behind closed doors that we dont know about? If we do get Sancho, which looks a bit more likely now, would he even get on the pitch, except maybe for a minute or two at the end?

Ighalo will come on in games we're closing out, not looking to win and start a few lesser cup matches. That's his level and that's absolutely fine.

The Lockdown was the worst thing that could have happened to Ighalo. He was scoring, he was involved in goals and he was getting lots of game time. Then, once lockdown kicked in, he lost his new signing bounce.

Great news. Avoids us spending unnecessary funds on average strikers like Josh King and Moussa Dembele.
Still think it was great news we signed him, given how the season's started and the signal that comes with the Cavani signing?

If we do sign Cavani, he really isn’t required.

Cavani was a free agent long before we extended Ighalo too. Poor planning.

Mmm, it’s an interesting one. I don’t really think our problem is or was a no.9 even with the start we’ve had now — “MMM” will score a sustainable amount, and Bruno will chip in with double figures too, which is why I was content with Ighalo in back-up.

In retrospect, it seems obviously not. I expected our transfer dealings to go far smoother this summer, expecting us to use the saved funds from buying a striker on positions of priority. But in reality we’ve signed the two easiest players we could; a utility midfielder from a club we have very good relations with and a DOF who loves us as much as he loves his own club, and a player who the footballing world has known will be a free agent for over 9 months.

There’s a very dull cloud around the club right now, and that’s not just the awful weather we’ve had this October.

With the amount of games we have coming this season, rotating between Martial, Cavani and Ighalo will be needed. Greenwood will probably have to cover the RW for now since we don't seem to be going anywhere with getting a RW this transfer window.

We couldn't have used Cavani in the spring/summer campaign if Martial got injured or needed rest. We also didn't know for sure that the league wouldn't stop again if the pandemic got worse. Securing him till January was a good secure choice. Then we wouldn't be forced to get a striker in this window if we couldn't.

And if the plan is for him to go back to China, their league usually starts in February/March, so it's a good time for him to link back up with his team there.

It's only "poor planning" if we look back now and know that Martial didn't get injured and that we'd get Cavani to agree to reasonable terms just before the window closes so he doesn't have to spend this season on his couch at home.

It’s like regretting you’ve bought life insurance when you didn’t need it.

I wouldn't be surprised if he gets sent back early. Happy for him to stick around until January for squad depth though.

The man didn't even play. If Martial got injured you could put Greenwood up top and use Mata on the wing. It is clear that Ole didn't trust him at all after renewal, so it doesn't make sense looking at it from this perspective. It is like saying we needed to loan CB because what if Maguire got injured.

Now you have 2 insurances, one unnecessary and none of which will cover you for long.
He didn't come cheap either, 6 million loan fee and Ighalo wages could pay you Alex Telles.

We moan about Cavani but this guy was basically retired in China, and we signed him when he hasn't performed in a top league for over 4 years.

You're right. He's a shadow of his pre lockdown self - even seems to get knocked off the ball easily, at the moment, whereas he was strong before.

So its exactly like buying life insurance and not needing it?

With the way our injuries go you can’t rule out Ighalo playing alongside Cavani by November.

Because you absolutely need to have two keepers on the game roster.
You see this as being the same case here? Bloody brilliant.
you clearly have no understanding of a basic premise. A backup striker is there, as guess what, back up. So if we had players out injured he could play, either from the start or come on as a sub. The fact he didn’t play was because everyone was fit.

how do you not understand that. I suppose we could always have played James or McT upfront if required instead.

You are looking at the loan at the time in isolation and me at the chain of events that followed which include Ole's having exactly zero faith in that back up option. Which is a pretty important aspect when you are renewing someone's contract. I already gave you an example how that position could have been filled without a drop in quality if Ighalo was sent back. And it didn't include James, nor McT as a striker, so don't spin it around.

It was poor planning and a bad decision in a market and situation where every million count for something and could have been spent elsewhere, no matter how you want to look at it now. It happens, just that it happens too much in our case.

Funny that you mentioned goalkeeper position btw. Something you could also question in terms of planning and overall wages we pay.

Felt a bit sorry for him as he was an cracking last second loan deal but once Cavani came in it was always going to be very difficult for him to get game time.
Came at a time when we needed him, helped us to a CL spot, and seems delighted that his dream came true.
Lovely bloke. Good deal all round.

All the best to him. Obviously a massive fan, came in, worked hard and did a job too for a short period.

Looked amazing before lockdown and never got a look in after that, just the way it panned out I guess.

All the best Odion. Great servant.

Real shame he didn't get a send off against Watford

He'll no doubt end up one of those players you can't believe he played for us in 10 years time

Lovely stuff. I wish him all the best.

He was good in his time here and did more than we could have expected to be honest.

Glad he got the amazing pleasure of playing for the club he supports, can’t imaging how amazing that must feel.

Good luck Odion. Go and make a killing in the Far East and retire a wealthy man :D

Bet if luck to him in the future. Thankful for his service in the short spell he’s been here. Put in some good displays in the 2nd half of the 2020 season.

My thanks to Ighalo for his 5 goals scored last season. Very likeable bloke as well! It’s sad that the good times end, but the good times happened :)
