MeCan I leave my pick with someone.
Schmeichel, Zoff, Yashin and another one are in the absolute top tier for Euros. Really strange that he wasn't picked earlier - and he wasn't that bad in 1964 or 1966 either (although a bit disappointing in 1962)Just curious but what's the rationale on passing up on Yashin for this long? Can understand that certain goalies have had immense tournament performances but Yashin's 1960 Euro performances have to be up there with the best of em?
He's fantastic overall, but wasn't there only 4 teams in that euro championship he won? That's what put me off picking him.Just curious but what's the rationale on passing up on Yashin for this long? Aye was just rewatching the 1966 German match whilst focusing on Voronin and the man (Yashin that is) is just immense. Just about every other match, he manages to do something which leaves you amazed. Quite something given he is a goalieReally strange that he wasn't picked earlier - and he wasn't that bad in 1964 or 1966 either (although a bit disappointing in 1962)

Yep, when I rewatched a few highlights from 1966 with British commentary, including USSR - West Germany game (to refresh my memory of Seeler's performance), it was all just "Yashin, Yashin, Yashin"Aye was just rewatching the 1966 German match whilst focusing on Voronin and the man (Yashin that is) is just immense. Read the OP, those initial tournaments include (by the rules) the qualification games as well, which were basically QF and 1/8 anyway.He's fantastic overall, but wasn't there only 4 teams in that euro championship he won? That's what put me off picking him.
Personally I just really enjoyed watching Chilavert in WC '98 at the time, and combined with his stellar record in that tournament and his ability with the ball at his feet I felt he was as good a choice as any.Just curious but what's the rationale on passing up on Yashin for this long? I'm going with a (slightly) more modern theme, and i just prefer BuffonAye was just rewatching the 1966 German match whilst focusing on Voronin and the man (Yashin that is) is just immense. I gathered, and that was actually what I was getting at. It doesn't make our achievements lesser ones, it just underscores how far ahead we were. People may well get this wrong idea from the basketball scorelines that nobody could defend or that they played suicidal tactics when Uruguay vs. Argentina were often low-scoring affairs.Yeah, the comment was about the level of competition and not about the striker himself (who failed to do it against the first proper side, like you said)

I understand and I'm not questioning any of the goalies chosen before Yashin, they are all mighty fine players with great tournament showings to boot. I just found it curious that 6 goalies were picked before him when I wasn't expecting more than a couple to be picked before him. Then again like both of you have mentioned, the tactical fit is also an important factor to consider.I'm going with a (slightly) more modern theme, and i just prefer Buffon![]()
@green_smileyLeft my pick with @green_smiley .
Its unusual enough to merit discussion for sure. Honestly, the first thing that came to mind for me with Yashin for this draft was his mistakes in the 1962 WC, and I pretty much looked elsewhere straight after that. I strongly considered Zoff, but I'm feeling particularly lazy at the moment and I couldn't be bothered trying to narrow down his best tournament from the million that he seems to have played in. There's one or two others who had superb tournaments on the whole but then had one unfortunately memorable blunder.I understand and I'm not questioning any of the goalies chosen before Yashin, they are all mighty fine players with great tournament showings to boot.
