We have 14 picks? Wow. Could have picked the keeper later if I'd seen this before!
FIFA Ballon d'Or: 2nd place 2010
Brazil post the Zico-Socrates era has been like that.Tbf, the Brazilian side of 2002 was in some ways the flair of the 3 Rs built on a rather pragmatic foundation (except the WBs of course), and 90s Brazil too.
Indeed, and that 1982 match was a 'water-shed' moment not just for Brazil but football as a whole in some ways. Thinking of which what other moments/innovations do you guys think change the course of the game as significantly as that one? The 1967 Celtic vs Inter (although without Luisito), Italy vs Brazil 1970, Inter vs Cruyff's Ajax when it came to rethinking the overly rigid catenaccio approach (giving way to a more modern interpretation in Italy iirc etc).Brazil post the Zico-Socrates era has been like that.
That's why I loved watching the Olympic team this summer. Its was the most focused on the attacking quartet-quintet than any Brazil squad I've seen since 1980s. They played a bit closer to that old Tele Santana style than any other team I remember although admittedly their squad was on another level to the other Olympic squads, even Germany.Brazil post the Zico-Socrates era has been like that.
Great pick, one of the better ones from the Copa America without a doubt.Enzo fransescoli
I'd say Barca v United was a huge moment in football.. probably 2009 or 2011.. after which possession football became king and even smaller sides tried to play their own brand of it.Indeed, and that 1982 match was a 'water-shed' moment not just for Brazil but football as a whole in some ways. I can for now and then pass down to the 14-16 of the draft when I log off in few hoursanyone can take my pick, plz? Thanks.
He really is. I picked him for the WC draft and read up on him and he is such an interesting story. He's rated so highly by the Brazilians who watched him and even if there's close to no footage there are still so many sources describing everything about him to make for a great write up.He's a really interesting player and we mulled over him a number of rounds ago. There's a few of that ilk knocking around still.
He doesn't really suit the style of that Swedish team. Always a joy to have him though.Would've looked great in @Annahnomoss Swedish side He has a serious crush on him
Sent. Thank you, sir.I can for now and then pass down to the 14-16 of the draft when I log off in few hours
England - Hungary, definitely.Indeed, and that 1982 match was a 'water-shed' moment not just for Brazil but football as a whole in some ways. I think your 2006 team attempted a replication in a lot of ways, cramming in four out-and-out attacking players down the middle, but again the wily European sides made light work of such idealistic naivety. That's why I loved watching the Olympic team this summer. Its was the most focused on the attacking quartet-quintet than any Brazil squad I've seen since 1980s. They played a bit closer to that old Tele Santana style than any other team I remember although admittedly their squad was on another level to the other Olympic squads, even Germany.
I think the 2008/09 season as a whole was a real game changer. From Spain's new brand of football in the summer of 2008 - raising eyebrows in particular with their ability to control by retaining possession when ahead against Russia and Germany - through Guardiola's first season in charge where this convention-changing brand of football was combined with a new level of domestic dominance not typically seen outside of diddy leagues in the modern era.I'd say Barca v United was a huge moment in football.. probably 2009 or 2011.. after which possession football became king and even smaller sides tried to play their own brand of it.
Maybe there is another even earlier example but I would say that Sweden vs Hungary was more the start of that revolution in how to deal with the Magyars. They cruised past every side who stood in their way on-route to winning gold, and Sweden were no exception, a 6-0 humiliation the final score, although Sweden still went on to beat Germany 2-0 only 4 days later.England - Hungary, definitely.
Hamburg - Juventus 1983?
Sure, they are great players who had a greater impact than some of the previous picks.Conti and Hagi are good picks at this stage @Joga Bonito and @Enigma_87 - both were outstanding in their respective World Cups and could have gone earlier than some of the R4-6 picks.
Cheers, mate. I was mulling over him, Ballack and another unpicked German the round before.Conti and Hagi are good picks at this stage @Joga Bonito and @Enigma_87 - both were outstanding in their respective World Cups and could have gone earlier than some of the R4-6 picks.
I'm not sure who out of Ballack/Hagi will start to be honest. Depends on the opposition I guess. Both had great world cups(1994,2002) and literally dragged their teams, being the best player in their side. Hagi brings more oomph and is more of a free role #10, while Ballack offers a lot in both phases, but both of them had excellent end product in those campaigns, so it will be tough decision who will start I guess.Sure, they are great players who had a greater impact than some of the previous picks.
Curious to see if the managers will deploy their players in an identical role in which they reached their international peak.
You have the right reasoning.I'm not sure who out of Ballack/Hagi will start to be honest. Depends on the opposition I guess. 1. Paolo ROSSI (Italy) [Golden Ball]
2. Paulo Roberto FALCÃO (Brazil) [Silver Ball]
3. Karl-Heinz RUMMENIGGE (West Germany) [Bronze Ball]
4. Zbigniew BONIEK (Poland)
5. Artur Antunes Coimbra "ZICO" (Brazil)
6. SOCRATES Souza Oliveira (Brazil)
7. Alain GIRESSE (France)
You should probably add Zhirkov and Giresse to the listcracking picks @Edgar Allan Pillow . I was strongly considering Forlan but he overlaps a bit to much with Iniesta for my liking which is a shame, fantastic WC performance from a player that i love.
I have @Physiocrat for that and he is not doing a good job....You should probably add Zhirkov and Giresse to the list
