Is Fred the worst regular starter for United in living memory?

What I am seeing, is not Fred. It is tactical issue. Bruno has wasted a lot of passes and Pogba offer little to no defensive support.

Fred is being used as a major scapegoat for poor tactical gameplan
It's both to be fair. He was thrown under the bus by Ole's tactics, but even in that situation a good midfielder shouldn't perform at this level.

He’s definitely the worst starter in terms of how he starts games. Absolutely crazy how often he sucks for the first 30-45 minutes before getting his shit together. Today another example. Been fine for the last 15 minutes after being absolutely diabolical for the first half hour.

i always liked Daley Blind, not sure why he's getting dragged into this

Fred is having a shocker but the balance of the team is all off and the manager should have changed it

Let’s be honest, he doesn’t even resemble anything like a professional footballer.
Woeful.
It’s so interesting when you see people defending and even praising him. It just shows they’re one of those idiotic muppets who are incapable of looking at him objectively and consider it the ultimate sin to criticise somebody in a red shirt.

2019-20, either Lingard or Pereira were nailed on to start. After Pogba got his injury, till Bruno arrived, both were regulars. When Martial also got injured, it meant that Rashford was out of position as a 9, being supplied by Lingard and Pereira. Nightmarish.

Fred's bad is a different kind of bad, more visible and dangerous, but those two would waste attacks, ghost through games, and just not provide anything.

Hes a pressing midfielder with decent short link up/dribbling. Shouldn't be asked to cover spaces defensively, hold position, shouldn't be asked to dictate play with passing. We're using him in every wrong way.

Hes being asked to do something that isn't his game. He's a good pressing midfielder. Not top level sure but he's very decent.

We put him in a role to be a holding mid essentially next to Pogba. Which means we have 0 positional awareness.
Surely this is on Ole.

Agreed, he’d be very useful in a team that played to its strengths rather than ole just plugging people in like it’s FM

Fred is the only player there capable of defending outside ofthe defenders
This is exactly it.

With Mctominay we have two, right now we only have one and is why wolves are running through us.

Fred can battle with Darmian and Fellaini (beside his head and chest, pure football). Cleverley, Blind among other contenders.

No but he's average whereas some United fans really seem to overrate him.

By that do you mean pass the ball? If so, I agree.
Its a coaching issue. He is being played out of position and asked to do a job he doesn’t have the skillset to do. He should be free to press and win back the ball higher up the pitch and there should be short passing options open to him.

The fact that world class players who cost millions “can’t pass” is down to the manager and the way he coaches them and what positions they are told to take up.

It’s on the coach and people can’t accept it.

jeezus wept, this threads should be locked asap. he had a bad start to the game and overall slow to the season. But he recovered, unlike Pogba in the second 30 minutes of today game, it's always hard to paly with Pogba or Matic who can't defend to save their life sometimes and with Solsskjaer giving questionable of the ball instructions. We should really defend much better as a team, not blame one player..

Dan James is worse even in today's lineup. If I don't ever see James and Martial play for us, it will be too soon. Fred isn't horrible, he's just average and not good enough for us. Kinda like Lindelof, once you know you can have Varane instead.

Cleverly never started more than 18 games for us in a league season. He just seemed like a regular because he was the tallest dwarf in terms of partnering Carrick 12-14.

Fred isn’t a world class player. His inability to pass the ball has feck all to do with coaching.

He is not suited to be anchor but come on mate. Look at his skill set. Is he really a United CM starter? He doesn’t even pass the eye test.

He’s weak and his passing isn’t very good. It’s a lot more apparent when McTominay isn’t there to cover him, particularly the physical aspect. We can get away with him in the middle but playing Matic or Pogba alongside him leads to games like this and Southampton.

Darren Gibson started a fair few. Is he better than Gibson?

He was fine today apart from a shaky start. It's not his fault that he was the only one expected to win the ball in midfield. He and Scott are synergistic.

People keep talking about him doing the job of multiple men, but his mistakes came from him being unable to pass the ball, or receive the ball under pressure
I'd be happy enough if he just did his own job well.

He was fine other than when he was shockingly bad for a third of the game. I agree.

Am I arguing otherwise?

Fred is vital for this team; utilised correctly, he’s one of few who does what it says on the tin. Not close to one of United’s worst players active, let alone all time.

He was moderately better in the second half because Traore wore himself out but let's be honest, Fred looked a boy amongst men pretty much the duration. At the very least he isn't nearly physical enough to play in 2 man midfield in this league where he's expected to defend.
