To be fair Lukaku was our primary striker and had plenty of opportunities to nail that position down for years to come. I still remember his atrocious first touch and appalling lack of movement as he would just stand in one spot and expect the service to come to him.

I have no idea why he's firing on all cylinders for Conte but perhaps Lukaku was part of the malaise that surrounded the club, and maybe still does, with mention of cliques etc
The reason he's firing now is cause he was made to lose that shit ton of weight he put on.

The one thing I truly dislike about United's principles is keeping the players too long on the books.

Of course new signing might need 2, maximum 3 seasons to adapt and develop IF the question is in adaptation and the quirks of the league/competitions etc, BUT if player's mindset stays at the same low and won't show any progress, then why bother? Sell the player, get him off the books and buy a replacement who wants to wear the shirt and become the best. Mentality>skills. Talent without determination and motivation is nothing.

I am an entrepreneur myself and it's so hard for me to understand the board, as your "employees"/footballers are the ones who make the difference where it matters. And when you feel that they are half-arsed and lack the mindset, then you axe them. Not wait for 3+ years for some magical moment to happen. Like.... why? Time is so precious and limited resource.

It'd be so much easier to do that like we do hiring in "regular" life: hire, observe and when you feel that there's no fit, axe the employee and replace one. You don't give one 5 years and hope for the best. It's just so stupid approach.
Absolutely. In an industry that’s almost solely based on talent acquisition, development, prospecting and turnover we have to be the worst big club out there post Fergie. I don’t want shiny new toys all the time. I just want the right lads and like it or not it’s trial and error. I like players like Fred Lindelof and James because they fight for their place as much as fans are divided on them. But when you have big stars on huge money phoning it in or not performing for whatever reason, cut them and reinvest. Stop wasting each other’s time and money.

Same thing with sitting on youth players until their value is gone and their contracts are too big to sell them on. It’s an exercise in cost cutting by the glazers. Much like the way they manage all that club debt by just paying off the interest. The deadwood is seen as the squad debt that won’t be cleared out until there’s no value left in the player at all. These days a new contract for Lingard wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest.

I really feel like Ole sees the importance of this, but he doesn't have as much control in this regard as many fans think. Especially when you have players on inflated wages, it becomes a lot harder to shift them.

The sooner he's gone, the better! Overrated and unprofessional for years now ...

What's a galactico got to do with anything i'm saying pal?
Did you respond to the wrong person?
No you quoted my post about Martial not being a galactico 'pal'. Its literally in the thread and even a tiny bit of effort on your part would have made that clear before you needed to start getting shirty about it.

It's been 5 days. Did his agent find him a club?

If not... Well chop chop then.

Be interested to see where he ends up. I've always thought he was over-critized before this year, and last year he was our best player over the course of the season as our main 9, but this year there's no doubting he was unacceptably bad. He's also a bit too injury prone to be able to afford to deal with the streakiness, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him tear it up in a more open league. He's still very gifted on the ball and has some of the best close control around.

Would like to see him fetch somewhere in the 30-50m range or a swap for a player we need. Unironically think he would have fit Barca more than Aguero, as he would enjoy the quick interplay with Messi.

Once again, it will be almost impossible to find him a new club AND that can pay his wages. The top clubs who could are not interested (likely), and he wouldn't want to move to a tier 3 club either. Our salary policy is destroying us really

Someone should create a thread, that's about discussing why we can't sell players for reasonable fee, our wages structure and why the club don't demote players to the reserves, i mean players on huge wages, that are not willing to go to other clubs because we pay them better like Chelsea would do? Take Jones for example been on our books for years and has hardly kick a ball, the club should be ruthless and force players who are not up for it out.

We simply matched his demands and Ole gave his full backing to him. Shame he didn't step up and show that Ole was correct in putting faith in him. Obviously money isn't his motivation anymore. Seems bizarre he earns Sala/Kane like wages and has never even got close to either.

Would rather sell James and Keep him around for another season. But if we get a good fee, I wouldn’t say no.

He had his best season after he had renewed his contract.

We need players we expect to do well, not constantly hoping they do. That's if we ever want to be great again. No one, even his biggest fans expect Martial to have a great season, it's all hope.

If we get rid of Pogba and Martial and manage to replace them both with Grealish only then boy oh boy - I would be happy for Ole to not have to win a PL title next season for him to have a go the following season after completing the gaps better.

How so?

Martial has been given one chance to play a full season as the main striker for us and he scored more than Berbatov in his best ever season for United whilst being a lot younger. Also in that season he offered far more outside of goals.
Also the team berbatov was in was more well rounded than the team Martial played for.

James is a lot more useful, even if he is less skillful, as a late game sub versus tired defenders.
And he seems more happy with being a squad player than Martial does.

People are crazy on the caf as always.

Especially when it comes to them foreigners. Look at how many on the caf think Pogba is shit but would happily pay 100m for Grealish

It makes sense. Martial is only useful as a starter, he doesn't want to be a squad player and doesn't do well as one, but isn't good enough to be a starter for what we want. He has no route to future starting position and is behind Greenwood as the first choice rotation option too now. Love him, but the time has come. Hopefully he can go on to have a good career and fetch a good price.

Martial was a disaster this Season. And i wouldn't lose sleep if we sold him.

I do think it's one year too soon though. I haven't quite lost all hope on him yet. When he's in the mood, he's pure class. Just didn't see it at all last season.

Just saying, there's some utter shit being talked about in this thread.

On topic though, Martial's salary is no problem. Him and his agents are not fecking retarded, of course he won't earn 250K/week elsewhere. If he wants to play day in day out he needs to join a lesser club and thus, earn a lesser salary.

Also to the guy above saying James is more useful than Tony, you're out of your god damn mind son.

Would make sense to me if we were signing another #9 (even a bargain one) but less so if we're not.

Cavani is aging and needs to be managed in terms of starts. Greenwood has played nearly entirely on the right so far, with Solskjaer openly saying it will be years before he's ready to become an out and out CF. And Rashford has never looked particularly good in that role.

I don't rate Martial that much but I'd much rather have him as an option at #9 than leave ourselves short.

Can we do a cash + Martial offer to Aston Villa for Grealish?
Grealish is Villa's Kane in terms of importance, there's no way Villa sells him for anything less than crazy money. The owners are investing heavily and will put heir feet down.

Martials inconsistency works against him. He has a reputation for being lazy, which is a shame because at times he's an absolute force. Give Martial Cavanis lion heart and I wouldn't trade him for Mbappe. Do other clubs rate him high enough to part with their star players + cash for Martial?

I would actually not be that upset if we sold him. 26 this year, don't think he's gonna reach the potential that we all know he has. Despite what many on here think, yes he's been a good player for us, but he's not been sensastional, I think he's way overrated on here.
