Martial contract thread | Romano: Club confident Martial will sign fresh terms

Not sure he’s deserving based on career thus far, but also understand why the club may want to hold on to him (his raw talent which clearly needs to be channeled big time).

Good decision or not?

I have no doubt he would shine and grow into a World Class player if he went to a rival. Hopefully he can do the same with us.

I don't see him as any worse than Leroy Sané for instance. The only difference is that one plays for a thriving team with a fluid, energetic attack while the other plays for José Mourinho.

Will be relieved if he signs.

Good. Post jose he could be brilliant.

And jose is unlikely to be here for much linger whatever happens.

Ps. In this case, Shaw is triple deserving of a new deal. Purely on his actual attempts to do the best for the club, work his way into Jose’s plans and overall attitude.

We're in shortage of attacking players and his contract runs down next season. Good decision so that even if we want to sell him next summer, we'll be in control, not allowing his agent to control the situation, and if he turns well this season then it's fine, so win-win.

Nah, want him gone tbh, if he isn't going to put any effort in when he does play he's just stealing a living.

Once again, I’ll say it’s the best news to come out of the club in quite some time. He is our second most talented player behind Pogba.

He has been underwhelming since the turn of the year, but I still believe he will become a star under a different manager. Glad that the club feel this way as well and recognize his potential.

Also who is/are PA dugout? Are they a more reliable source than the usual ones?

Interesting to see what his ardent fans on here say IF he outright rejects the offer.

This x1000.

It was refreshing when Shaw said he wants to stay at the club and earn his new contract not just be given one. His performances have proven he's true to his word.

Martial needs to give his head a wobble. I'll be happy if he stays but whatever coach he plays for he'll have to start delivering and showing more on the pitch. By all means have a bad game but don't trudge about the pitch sulking when we are a goal down.

Meh, Mourinhos going anyway. Might as well hold on to him to see how he does with the next manager.

So what happens if he's offered a higher salary than Pogba now?

Should we start giving raises/new contract to all of our players? Just for the fact that they seem "special" or "have potential"?

I am sorry but i dont see the logic behind this, would this new contract make Martial care more about playing? and actually move around a bit on the pitch?

It is not about him "deserved a new contract" or not, but from the business aspect, he is a player with a certain market value. So if all conditions(wages etc) are suitable, the club should avoid to let the player leave on free. They either sell him this summer or give him a contract extension.

BBC reported it already yesterday so the source isn't a big problem.

We're obviously wary of losing him and looking back in 2/3 years at a Salah or De Bruyne situation but those players moved and got regular football to develop into the players we see today, something Martial isn't getting with us at the moment.

His contract is up soon, it's mostly a matter of simply keeping him.

Offering a long term contract to a player the current manager won't even stick on the bench at times? Smacks of planning for a potentially imminent post-Jose future to me...

If the only intention is to sell him for decent money next summer, he probably doesn't sign the contract. His best chance of leaving is rjnniruhis contract down.

Therefore, if he signs I reckon it'll be because either he thinks Jose won't be here much longer or he's been given assurances of some sort from the club.

Brilliant news, if we do get a new manager this season, hopefully they'll bring out the best in him.

If not, at least we have secured his value in the transfer market. Win/Win

I think this only becomes a proper story if he actually signs the deal, there's been plenty of contract offers over the last few months haven't there?

Waiting to see what happens when we bring in the next manager, and they stop using Martial cos they think hes lazy or has a bad attitude (heck for all this talk about Martial under Jose, people quickly forget about Sane under Pep this season).

He’s symptomatic of our recent inability to improve players as a club. He isn’t a better player now than he was on his debut against Liverpool, which is unacceptable considering the club’s heritage and the undoubted raw talent he had/has.

Jose’s policy of ‘one bad game and you’re out’ does not help players like him.

Good. Now get him fecking motivated and playing.

What are you on about? Martial is entering the last year of his contract (though we have the option of an extra year). Martial's wages aren't near 100k, nevermind near Pogba's current salary so why are you bringing him into this? If we don't offer him a new contract, then if he is sold we'll get nowhere near what we paid for him. It is about protecting the investment.

Of course. We offered him a new contract anyway but he rejected it as he said he wanted to earn a new one. As he's a free agent next year he might end up continuing to reject the new contract and go to Spurs or somewhere.

There was some news that he was interested in a new contract before Sanchez arrived, but then didn't want it anymore or something.
Was fine to sign a new contract in December, was looking for a house and stuff then Sanchez signed, discussions over a new contract were stopped by the club. Martial's agent mouthed off to Bouhafsi in February saying discussions had stopped then a few weeks later they resumed and he rejected because by that point he had been moved over to the right and then out of the team. He stopped looking for a new house and then Martial's agent specifically mentioned the January transfer window as the problem at the end of the season.

Can interpret this both positively and negatively. Positively in that we are keeping a talented player and even if we want to sell him we would get a good price. Negatively could be player power and suits have triumphed over the manager who clearly does not rate him.

Great news. He's a superb talent and I hope he fullfills his potential. If he still wants to move elsewhere, then let him go abroad I guess.

So if Martial improves after signing new contract, does that mean he has knuckled down and started putting the hard work or that he was not in it before because he was fishing for a salary hike :D :D
