Having a variety of players isn’t a bad thing. If Greenwood proves himself then he’ll earn a starting spot. Understudying Martial and James for a few years won’t harm him as a player. Expecting him to lead the line week out week in will. It’s very normal for strikers to start out wide.
I don’t expect him to lead the line every week. I expect Martial to. You seem to be proposing that he competes for the role of understudy with Haaland. That is not beneficial for either. As for him being the understudy for James, James himself, bar an early flurry, has struggled to show he can regularly produce at this level. He’s not scored in 3 months, and had similar figures in the Championship. He should be an understudy himself.
2 9s is enough, with Rashford able to play there as an option in an emergency. Greenwood has shown he is good enough to be second choice. He has 7 goals already, and will contribute double figures this season as second choice. Haaland makes sense if Martial leaves, how do you even decide who is first choice out of your two 19 year olds next season?
I’d prefer to get Sancho to start on the right, and only bring in another striker if Martial leaves. Or bring in a senior striker like Mandzukic or preferably, Diego Costa.
City buying two 19 year old strikers to understudy Aguero would have made little sense. It’s a simple system where Aguero is first choice and Jesus plays the other games. Iheanacho left when Jesus joined, competing for the deputy role doesn’t help anyone. Even if Greenwood spends a couple of years on the right, what happens after that couple of years? We will have a 21 year old Greenwood and a 21 year old Haaland. And a 26 year old Martial if he is here and delivering.
