Ronaldo is a poor dribbler, has one of the worst take ons in La Liga, scores far less from outside the box than Messi. He is good from within 6 yards, it’s not a myth at all. Give Ronaldo the ball in the middle of the pitch and no one is worried. Compare the types of goal Messi has scored this season to Ronaldo and all the angles he’s able to score from and it’s far more varied than Ronaldo. Ronaldo is a poacher and a damn good one, Messi is elite in many more ways on a pitch than Ronaldo is. And this is with Ronaldo playing much closer to goal than Messi. Someone posted a video of Ronaldo’s assists in CL this year and many of them were from defections and even a couple were misplaced places where he got lucky. No one is worried about Ronaldo outside of the box, everyone is worried about Messi all over the pitch as he can go through your team if you’re not careful.

No myths at all, and not a slight to Ronaldo, but 90% of his goals are headers or shots within 6 yards, Messi’s can do so much more with the ball even if Ronaldo is obviously much better in the air
I am afraid you got that one totally wrong

The best part of this rilvary, is that yesterday we got to see one of the best goals in UCL history, and today we can tune into the Barcelona game thinking "let's see what Messi does to trump Ronaldo today".

I know 95% he's not going to score a goal like the one Ronaldo just did or put 3 on Roma, but just that these two players can lit that doubt in our brain of "one of them just made history, let's see if the other outdoes him" it's a gift for any football fan.
This is the best part of the rivalry, they always go out and try to do one better.

Statistically speaking Ronaldo is ahead by a large margin. How do you argue against that?
How so, enlighten me. Messi has played 150 fewer games but almost same number of goals, much more assists to his name and is still younger.

On paper only he was a winger, he wasn't tracking back whatsoever ,he was given freedom to roam forward with minimal defensive duties which allowed him to explode from a statistical POV. I always laugh at this notion of "winger" for Ronaldo, like it prevented him somehow from scoring or like it made him defend more than a normal wing forward.
It's not about defending, it's about staying wide and putting in a cross vs cutting inside as your main instruction from the coach. Ronaldo was absolutely a winger earlier in his career.

That is without a question. I just said he wasn't a winger when he started to score 40 goals a season

It's going to be Real vs Barca in the CL final, isn't it? Both have 5 Ballon D'ors, it's gonna be the ultimate final.

Ronaldo: Yes! Sporting CP in Portugal first division and Manchester United in BPL.
Messi: No! Only Barcelona.
Judge: Have any of you won a title with your national team?
Ronaldo: Yes! We won Portugal’s firstever European Championship.

Messi: Yes, 4 times as well with Barcelona only.

Ronaldo: 146
Messi: 110
Judge: Well, after analyzing all of the facts that have been presented to me. I can only draw one conclusion when it comes to comparing you both as football players. That conclusion is that Ronaldo is the better player in almost every category. When it comes to goal scoring and accolades for both club and country, Ronaldo comes out on top. Messi, you are without a doubt Barcelona’s best player of all time. But certainly not the world’s best ever. That is clearly Ronaldo at the moment. Messi: But I am younger than Ronaldo and haven’t played as many matches as him.
Judge: I understand that, but until you surpass his goal scoring records & win as many trophies both individually and collectively as he has, then Ronaldo will, according to the statistics, be considered as the best football player of all time. Until then, keep pushing on and you just might be able to achieve just as much as Ronaldo!

If you took Messi's extraordinary goalscoring away you'd be left with Diego Maradona.

What would you be left with if you took Cristiano's away? Even his fans admit that he isn't as good as some of the other all time great's technically so without the goals what sort of player would we be looking at? Struggling to think of a comparison as seamless as the Messi-Maradona one.

Did Messi win the WC on his own? Can he lead the team and influence the game, carry the team and impact on big games/big moments like Maradona?

Can't argue with it? It's absolute bollocks

I knew it would be as soon as I seen this gem:
Ronaldo: Yes! Sporting CP in Portugal first division and Manchester United in BPL.
Messi: No! Only Barcelona.
We act like it's a negative that Messi has only ever played for one club when that one club is arguably the greatest club of our generation and that is in large part down to his greatness.

It actually pisses me off that people still think Messi needs to play somewhere else. Only a few weeks ago he dicked the Champions of England but still some people are unsure if he could cut it away to Stoke and Newcastle? Ludicrous.

I love how it ends by calling CR the best ever when using the same criteria it just used to put him above Messi would see him fall well short of Pele.

I was quite clearly talking about style of play

Maradona never won the WC on his own either, fwiw.
You didn’t mention style of play in your previous post. And style of play is meaningless in GOAT discussion.

When I see these 3 tell tale myths of a blinkered pro Messi fan in a debate I simply walk away.
Less than ten percent of Ronaldo’s goals were outside the box, he doesn’t have much variety in the way he scores, Messi has scored in a wider variety of ways than Ronaldo has.

And this quote from the article is right on point:

“The narrative that Messi is the greatest footballer and Ronaldo is the greatest goal scorer is a false one. Lionel Messi is the greatest footballer and the greatest goal scorer. His goal to game ratio is higher and would only rise if we discount penalties.”

Why would we discount penalties? Because Messi isn't good at them?

And this applies to Messi as well. Messi has about similar number of goals scored outside the box as Ronaldo over their career.

And you are wrong again about variety of goals, Ronaldo has more variety of goals with his right foot left foot (weaker foot), more skill shots (volleys, bicycle, backheels), more headers, more free kicks and penalties. Only thing Messi has clearly more is his dribble goals.

.......
Yet the only categories in which Messi beats CR7 in terms of variety is goals from dribbles, goals from outside the box and type of finishes in one on ones. CR7 scores more with his head, scores more with his weaker foot, scores more from penalties, more from free kicks, more from set pieces even scores a larger variety of skill shots. But in your mind ' Messi has more variety'

Its unsurprising you skipped this one below. Since it rips to shreds your clearly blinkered views of CR7 as a player...

"Conclusion number ONE

Ronaldo is one of the best footballers in history. Like many culés I have often claimed he would probably just rank outside the top 10, but after reviewing all of his goals I can only rate him higher. He has scored all kinds of goals throughout his career, from long distance missiles to dribbling through defenses to powerful headers to weak-foot chips and so on and so on and he has done so consistently for over a decade."

Why does this myth persist? Messi hurts you in one of the three ways that he is a specialist in. With his elite dribbling, elite passing and his elite vision. Ronaldo can hit you from range, in the air, can dribble you at clsoe to an elite level when he choses and has very good vision. Ronaldo is actually the one who has more ways with which to hurt you whilst, Messi is so good at his 3 ways, he is plain unstoppable with them. Even if you know they are coming.

Furthermore its pure myth that Ronaldo is just an elite scorer. In this seasons champions league for example he has created one less chance, than Messi, assisted more and has scored more. That tallies with being more than just an elite scorer. People really need to respect both as the greatest multi role attackers in their era. Messi may be the superior play maker, but that doesn't make Ronaldo merely an elite scorer. Even at his current age he is still much more than just an elite scorer.
This is just rediculous. Now Ronaldo is just as good an alloround footballer as Messi. Messi is just a specialist in 3 things. Like he isnt one of the best freekick takers, he doesn't have supposedly range like Ronaldo. ronaldo when chooses is a close to elite dribbler, when he chooses to? That just sounds so rediculous. And you try to act like you are busting myths on here. Hilarious.

I haven't heard anyone suggest he couldn't cut it against Premiership relegation contenders... but you're suggesting that because he looked good against a team that's not going to qualify for the Champions League this season, that it's evidence of greatness.

Notice the lack of response to this point.
Because Ronaldo spent a large part of 2 or 3 years as a traditional winger in a 4-4-2 whereas Messi was mostly a right forward for a 4-3-3 since the beginning.

So we can just ignore those years then as they don't count?
