Official: FC Barcelona charged with Corruption over payments to former referees chief | UEFA open investigation

I remember seeing somebody on TikTok try and claim that Barcelona were found innocent in the refereeing scandal.

Even if that’s true, they’re still a very dirty, corrupt club. I’ve never liked them and these credible allegations and charges give me a reason.

I’m struggling to understand. Why would UEFA even countenance such an idea?

To be fair, we don't know if they accepted the deal or not. Right now it's mostly Rubiales and Piqué (and to some extent Messi) that are smeared by this. But if Ceferin accepted and UEFA money made it's way to Barcelona to pay for the their salaries then it's a completely different story.

The business of football is so shady.

Lot of salt here. Even if true, Messi deserves every penny. The joy he's brought to football is priceless. Leo ❤️

Tbf to Barca they and Real have been dining out on Government subsidies, tax breaks, land deals etc for decades. Asking UEFA to pay their players wages probably seems reasonable to them. Additionally, weren't Barca also asking other La Liga clubs to pay for Messi's wages to keep La Liga glamorous at one point?

The short version is that there's audio recordings of Rubiales (head of the Spanish federation) saying to Ceferin that Pique and Messi wanted UEFA to pay the part of their wages that corresponded to what Barsa limited due the Covid lockdowns.

These bastards are so shameless.

I see, the "But Your Honor, the cop didn't accept the bribe" deffense.

Super league plans, 115 charges, corruption and dodgy payments, oil state teams

Football is really an ugly game isn't it

Busquets and Messi exhibiting pure greed whilst the rest of the world suffered from lockdowns etc. the players and the club are stinking dirty.

Its not, many Barca-fans say this, they genuinely think he was underpayed.

If Messi only made 130 million USD compared to Ronaldo's 260 million USD according to Forbes last year, despite being 2 years younger, he's definitely underpaid.

Okay, but i was talking about his time at Barca.

Corrupt to the core and people get grief for even suggesting there might be corruption involved with on field decisions, laughable.

Make or break for football get its act together or people will turn away.

Fast forward a year and literally nothing happened.

I love how many naive people there were in this thread predicting Barca will get punished or even relegated.

Same people who also think City will get punished.

The reality is, nothing ever happens to the big clubs. The last time a big club was severely punished was Juve in 2006, and if anything this discouraged the powers to do anything similar in the future, as the Calciopoli buried Italian football which still hasn't recovered from it and never will.

For this reason, you will never see Barcelona or City punished to the extent that it would put the reputation of the league in danger. The authorities learned their lesson and their approach is to pretend nothing happened and move on.

The case is still kicking through the courts in Catalonia. Just takes a long time.

The charges seem to be corruption”, “breach of trust” and “false business records” according to NYT.

Good chance they're guilty on all of them. Not sure if football authorities press charges after as well.

Meanwhile, not sure how they make the la Liga cap this season without a fire sale.

How much are they over? Or potentially over come due date?

Can’t say I’ve watched them enough to say who is worth buying. What do you think?

It'll be interesting to see if they're made to cover the missing 60m from the "fake" sale of the studios where they didn't actually receive the money.

Maybe they'll do some other dodgy deal again...

I haven't watched them much either, they've got some good young players.

It's all smoke and mirrors with them, possibly it'll be next summer before they're in deep enough to be forced to sell cheap.

Araujo is very good. Lots of hype about Yamal but probably not available. Gavi and Pedri are both very good but probably too much of an injury risk to throw serious money at, probably not available either anyway.

So araujo partner with Martinez?

I think Araujo is the only one from their core players that might be available.

They will find some more levers, ship Lewandowski and Raphinha off to Saudi Arabia next season, sign some players on a free and will be fine. They will always qualify for CL and have a great commercial income.

Last summer was probably a blueprint for this one: sell more than you buy.
