United seal Jones deal

Phil Jones is United's first signing of summer 2011 after the Reds successfully negotiated a transfer with Blackburn Rovers.

A club statement published on Monday reads as follows:

"Manchester United is delighted to announce it has signed an agreement with Blackburn Rovers for the transfer of Phil Jones.

"The player passed a medical in Manchester last week and has agreed a 5-year contract. The deal will be completed once the player returns from international duty."

Jones, 19, came through the youth ranks at Blackburn before turning professional on 1 July 2009. He made his senior debut two months later, in a Carling Cup victory at Nottingham Forest, and went on to make a total of 40 appearances for Rovers.

The robust central defender, who can also play in midfield, has been capped seven times so far by England at Under-21 level. The latest appearance was in Denmark on Sunday, when he started alongside new club colleagues Tom Cleverley, Chris Smalling and Danny Welbeck in the 1-1 draw with Spain in the UEFA Under-21 Championships.

Sir Alex: "Phil had a fantastic season with Blackburn last year, we made enquiries in November, hoping we would get him in January. It wasn't to be but we were prepared to wait anyway. He's a fantastic young player."
Blackburn Rovers FC: "Much as we'd love him to stay on with us - and we made all efforts to convince him to stay - Phil has to finally follow his heart."
Harry Redknapp: "Every club in the top six wanted Jones but the boy chose United and good luck to him."

Yes!

Deal will be completed once he comes back from the U21 means there's still some formalities left?

 Yes! Welcome, Phil Jones.

About damn time we sealed this transfer. For his age he's quite an accomplised defender and his versatility should make him a useful asset as well.

Now, on to the next one.

Glad this is finally done and dusted, it was in danger of dragging on for ages.

Happy with this signing.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Jones playing at centre midfield a lot in his first season with us.

So thats:

Ferdinand
Vidic
Jones
Smalling

As our 4 centre backs, surely no other club boasts a better set of defenders than that?
Barcelona doesn't! they can get away with Mascherano there! Now its time for some midfield re-inforcements.

Great signing, might be a lot of money now but if he fulfills his potential and stays here for the next 15 years then it's worth it.

Ferguson builds his team from defence.

None better in the world.... :)
I assume De Gea deal will be done. Anyone think we need to get a fullback inlight of possible Sheesey leaving and no Gaz and the fact Evra been flat for a while - he probably needs some competition.

Sky Sports insinuated that we only payed the release clause, due to Jones telling Blackburn he didn't want to go anywhere except for United, leaving them with no choice.
