It starts to pick up once you get the grasp of it, the combat actually makes sense (in terms of melee) compared to the original. And it has tons of fan service too, the "reworked" areas are total memberberries.

The only real gripe I have is I hate the magic appearing enemies. I blame people accepting that shite in GOW for that.
That’s been my biggest gripe soo far. The melee is repetitive, also things like kicking enemies off the ladder as they climb up towards you I don’t know how to do, but I’ve seen it can be done.

There are different aspects to the melee side which the game doesn't teach you. Like (for example) you can run and slice, you can stun them in a few different ways, can duck under grabs (without a prompt). It feels like they went for more depth, but decided to not announce it for some reason.

As for the ladders, are you talking about knocking them down, or the actual kick off them? Because the latter seems contextual even though I've never noticed a prompt.

For ladders kick them or the ladder while they are climbing up, I know shooting them is more effective. But when there’s a bunch beneath you that would be more strategic.

Yeah, things like running and slicing or (if possible kicking/punching) I have no idea how to do but would turn the for me from an 7 to a 9… because when I’ve seen clips it looks very very fun. For me it’s been fun but the combat when I face 6-8 enemies is where I feel let down after a while.

The exact same bug the engine has had since launch, I might add. And not just on the PS5, it's apparent on PC and Xbox too, just less so depending on certain circumstances.

Capcom are woeful at fixing/updating anything.
True likely won't be patched, shame because it can look great on PS5 in sections. Game itself is fantastic as ever though and feel they've cut just the right about of content too from the original. Unlike RE3R.

Just not gripping me at the minute, though admittedly I’m only 30 mins in. I agree with other comments regarding the graphics, just doesn’t look like a PS5 game.

Gonna get Metroid finished first I think then come back to it.
Did the original grip you?

I think we are crossing wires. Are you asking how to knock the ladders down? Because that's a prompt when you run up to them. But in certain circumstances, you can actually kick them (melee attack without knife) off the ladder, but so far I can't figure out the exact way to get it to work. I feel like it's going to be another suplex scenario (OG fans will know what that means).

As for the second paragraph, you can run and slice. As for facing multiple enemies, there are a few tactics, such as shooting the legs of the enemy at the front of the pack so they either fall and the others trip over, or stun (so you can kick them all), or get them to a point where you can grenade/use fire to help. For example, in the very first encounter in the village, you can lead them to the cow shed and shoot the lantern to set the cow and villagers on fire, as you progress you can use the bear traps/explosives to trick them. There are a lot of ways you can have fun, they just aren't all spelled out for you at the start which I find odd as they don't seem to sure on what they want you to know/find out.

So far I very much agree. I like the reworked sections, although I think the "oh look we've reversed the area, how clever are we!" parts will wear a little thin. I still think it's all a little more narrow than I'd like, but the extra bits that happen (that I won't spoil) are cool additions and add some depth.

There's a joke about little Elvis in there. And it's a true story to boot.

But no, Elvis isn't an actual gamer nor would he have played 4, he just tries to be funny and wind Alock up (has a lot to learn in that area. He'll never not be a newbie). Also he's shit at quizzes, especially specialist subjects.

I was referring to both.

Yeah, the shooting at different point or blowing things up to get multiple kills is great.

Some ladders you can kick down, some you can't. It's not consistent at all, which I find odd as you'd have to be fans of the original to know which ones you can. Rule of thumb though, is that in the "events" (like the first village or the defending the house with Sera), those ladders you can kick down.

However with all ladders you can shot them near the top (or people on platforms) and get them to fall down. Also, as I said, there is a kick from the top you can do but I have no idea how to make it happen 100% of the time.

Like I said it's odd to me that they've made the game more accessible for modern players, and yet they seem reluctant to highlight the actual good stuff they've added. It's weird.

It’s more like Team Ninja played Sekiro and went “oh this is good, let’s make this” and then made a game about half as good.

still fun though.
Yeah I'll play it more, but ultimately from what I've played it follows on from Nioh 2 in that they have no idea what they did that made Nioh 1 so great so are just throwing shit at the wall.

Actually I have another complaint...

Why the feck does a trained agent take so long to aim? Like how much did you have to fail basic training that you can't get your eye in before an enemy has time to feck around looking at a box, then wander around, then notice you, then think "oh maybe I should eat that dude", then ponder life choices that led you to being a slug infested slave...all whilst Leon is still trying to get over his cross-eyes and shoot straight.

Someone on Reddit discovered that during the village fight at the beginning of the game if you shoot the bell way off in the distance, you end it immediately. Love stuff like that in games.

Very much so. It’s probably more a reflection on me than the game itself, though I just find the controls a bit clunky so far. I will probably give it another proper go this week, I’ve no doubt it’ll be a very good game.

Ignore Redlambs. He likes to punch down to cover for his own insecurities and the fact he’s a failed games developer.

So i beat the game. I definitely shouldnt have chosen easy difficulty, but i was a bit stressed out about the thought of running out of ammo and healing items during the game, but it ended up being too easy.. As someone who has played the previous remake, i would give it 8.5. If i hadnt probably a 9. The graphics are good, but should be better for RE next gen game.

Enjoying it so far but doesn’t have the same giant leap feeling as RE2 Remake did.

Makes sense I guess as its remaking a newer game. Tbh the serious tone is a bit rubbish compared to the beautiful mess that the original RE4 is.

Just hasn’t got the same “charm”.

But yeah the movement is clunky. It's like they still wanted to rein it in to not be completely away from the original. But as I said above, the aiming is as well. Could do with an all round polish in that area.

Once you get used to it though, it's not too bad with the melee/parry system.

Overall I'm liking it a lot now I've got deeper in to it, but we'll see what the castle is about.

I noticed they cut some areas that were in the original. Those werent very good but they didnt add any new ones from my memory. Still im not complaining too much. I just tried playing the ps4 version of game and its pretty hard to tell the difference in graphics from the ps4 version and the ps5 version. Both on framerate mode.

Oh didn't know about the cutting out bit, agree thats it's not big of a deal. I'm pretty sure they've flips areas as well, which is interesting but yeah don't think they've added anything new. Still they've done a really solid job(Shame about the technical stuff)

I'm on chapter 12 and I think it's fantastic so far. All the goofiness and silliness of RE4 is there and also just lots of little details that make 4 such a weird experience.

The amount of cut content has been fine so far, nothing essential has been left out unlike in RE3 (RIP clocktower) and things that i worried about them neglecting are all in there. Apparently you can throw eggs at Ashley too

Btw Ashley is a billion times better. Still annoying in some ways but so much better as a character.

They added tons of new stuff though, so it more than compensated for it. I am on Chapter 13 and personally absolutely love this remake. They didn't cut anything important and expanded on it. I think this just tops RE2 Remake by a small margin which was also brilliant. Too bad RE3 Remake was done so hastily with B team.

I didnt really notice what the new content was apart i guess from the cutscenes and dialogue being a bit different and some puzzles i dont remember being there.

Been playing for about 5-6 hours and I’m really liking it so far. A few things:

One, I think the game looks really good, but I wouldn’t say it stands out. That doesn’t really bother me because I put more importance on how well its runs and it runs really well. At least for me, anyway.

Also, Leon controls like an absolute tank! I’ve got used to it now. I went into the menus and changed some settings to make it all move a bit faster, but obviously can’t change the fundamental moving actions of the character, so there’s still a bit of clunkiness there. But it doesn’t take away from the game that much.

Lastly, this game is a lot fecking harder than I remember it! Some of the enemies have absolutely no fecking chill!

Controls are definitely a bit old school still but maybe that was Capcoms intention. Definitely stick with it. It's a proper challenge too even on casual so don't get put off by the difficulty just don't leave any stones unturned ammo and treasure wise in every single area. That cabin section earlyish on is an adrenaline rush and a half!

I can't say from the top of my head as there are a lot of little things, one that comes to my mind is area behind the church being much more expansive. I mean I am at start of Chapter 13 and I have over 20 hours in the game, that will be much longer that I had in original RE4 when I finish it.

Oh i finished the game at 14 hours. Which is about the same time i spent on the original. But yeah you're probably correct about the added content.

Still game great no doubt.

Completed it. That was a really good game in my opinion and a very good remake. My GOTY so far, ahead of Dead Space. Despite my complaining i'm glad I played it on hardcore as the survival element was ridiculous at times. You just barely feel you're clinging on in each area and it makes it much more satisfying when you manage to get by on the smallest amount of ammo and health. There's so many funny touches and nods to the original game's wackiness; I was surprised at how much actually was left in the game.

Good luck remaking RE5 and making that less stupid Capcom. You'll need it. Would love a Code Veronica remake but i doubt that will happen.

Well they haven't really expressed much interest in doing it to my knowledge despite it being a bit of a flawed classic. I get the feeling they'd rather do 5 if they were to do another remake after this. Personally I can't say i'd be excited for a 5 remake unless they drastically changed just about everything.

Finished off Village yesterday and already up to Chapter 3 in this. Love it. Not really seeing the issue with the graphics although I am playing on resolution mode with the sexy hair. Still performs really well.

It's so good playing through this again as I can hardly remember any of it. Spent far too long on the shooting range already.

Playing on pc? The fps drop was too much in my face to continue on resolution mode after playing on fps mode. Or does your tv has vrr?

PS5. Yeah I think it's called game mode on my Samsung.
Resolution mode is complete viable if your tv has vrr. So perhaps thats why there isnt a fps drop punching you in the face on resolution mode.

Nah, the shooting on this is trash. It's legit making me consider switching to controller so I don't have to worry about it.

Also, for those playing on console/controller, does the boat work ok? It's horrible driving it around on mouse with the look snap (so you can't look around whilst driving).

I think it's more that they are still not as great as should be. The engine isn't all that. However, I still like how it looks overall, there's some very cool little touches too.

I've only just played it again (on VR) so I could enjoy the changes. Overall, so far (I'm still in the village fecking around with the boat), I'm liking the areas that have been kept the same but expanded on. I'm not so keen on some parts now being off to the side though (like the emblem bit when you get the rifle, or the fishing village) as I think it changes the journey flow a bit too much. However all in all, I'm pleasantly surprised how faithful early game is, and even expanded on. This actually feels like a proper remake and not like for like stuff like Dead Space or Metroid Prime (though those are both still great updates and in the latter's case it would be nigh on impossible to reimagine the level layouts tbf).

I'm still hating the magic spawning enemies though, it's just obvious and tedious. But that's a mechanic I've always disliked in games that do it, it's cheap and lazy design that the original does have but nowhere near as much (and it makes more sense, as in they are always coming from somewhere else not just dropping on your head). And of course, the shooting "mechanic" I keep banging on about. I hope they don't keep that dumb idea of bad sway/zoom in so you can crit more in future games. Should never EVER take control away from the player just to add fake difficulty.

But all in all, yep I'm really enjoying it. Which is why I'm trying my hardest not to rush it and look around properly (I'm trying not to use the map to find stuff, the audio clues are ridiculously loud though ).
