Ronaldo | Refused to come on as sub, left OT | Axed from squad for Chelsea & fined 2 weeks wages

That's what I'm taking from this, mainly.

ETH was put in a very difficult position with regard to Ronaldo (that's my take on it, from the outside).

And he's dealt with it as well as he could (that's my take on it, from the outside).

(It's what I said months ago, though, basically - he needs to get the team playing well: if he does that, Ronaldo has no leverage.)

Just to clarify, where are you observing this from?

Rashford was downtooling for a year, last year. I think it's way more offensive than leaving with minutes to go in one game, don't you think so?

Has Rashford ever apologized to fans? or do you think that's more acceptable?

'downtooling' is not a word or a phrase so please stop it. You can say a Player has downed tools as in they put their tools down and stopped working. I know this is pedantic but it winds me up everytime I read it. You've clearly picked it up off @VidaRed who's been at it for ages but it's not a thing. Let's not make it a thing.

Saw some Ronaldo stans online say Ten Hag doesn't know how to handle absolute superstars. Well... He handled this situation perfectly. Good stuff.

ETH indeed handled the situation perfectly. To be fair though, what he did with Ronaldo isn't the hard part of dealing with absolute superstars, he axed a washed out Ronaldo that skipped pre-season and who wasn't really appreciated by many players in the locker room. Dealing with superstars acting out while being dominant pieces in your starting team is the hard part.

Just to clarify, where are you observing this from?

Geographically, you mean?

At this very moment I'm observing it from an airport in northern Europe.

Yesterday I was observing it from a cafe further south in Europe, then (later that night) from a hotel room.

Tomorrow, I could be observing it from a holding cell in Asia (if things don't go according to plan).

What's your point?

Maybe.

But I would repeat what I've said before:

It's possible (very likely even) that Woodward/United used Fergie to secure the Ronaldo transfer. That doesn't mean he pushed for it or unduly influenced the actual decision makers at United to go for it.

We don't know how much Fergie has been involved in anything since his retirement. But there is very little evidence that he's been - let's say - consistently influential. As far as I know, there hasn't been a word said by any of his managerial successors indicating that he's been meddling in their affairs. Both LVG and Mourinho have made comments about the club (the structure, Woodward) - but nothing about Fergie being a negative presence hanging over 'em.

When Ole was in charge he dropped Ronaldo at the start of the season for the game against everton. There was media outrage and fergie came out and said Ronaldo must start, or you must start your best players. Ole never dared dropped him again after that.

And lets not forget Fergie suggested Ole to the board as a interim manager and before that Fergie recommended David Moyes to this club.

So I don't think it's a long shot to assume he had a part to play in bringing Ronaldo back as there were wide reports that a personal phone call between the two was the clincher in sealing the deal

Do that to SAF and he won't enter Old Trafford ever again.
So why should ETH be any different? He has done the right thing. Suspended him.

I never said it was.

In fact, I said the very opposite.

To whom? He has probably apologized to ETH and/or team if that was the ask. I am guessing ETH doesn't care about Insta apologies
To the club, the fans by official statement. He disrespected not only the manager, the team but also the club and fans.

'Probably' 'Guessing'? you could simply said nothing it'd be still the same.

Btw you're one of his fans I suppose? Yes/No please.

it’s amazing seeing all the ‘Ronaldo cult’ people in the media! Not sure if they genuinely believe he’s still able to play at the highest level or just like blowing smoke up his backside for other reasons…

This POS would've had a brain aneurysm had someone like Pogba pulled the same thing.

The making of fecking Ronaldo to be a martyr in this situation has to be one of the most insane things I've ever seen in sports.

None of what he's accomplished gives him any right to behave like a hormonal teenager and trying to justify or excuse it by blaming everything else but him is the exact type of unnaccountability that's becoming a cancer in our societies.

Nobody has a divine right to play, sulk and undermine their boss just because of who they are. Skipping preseason while looking for other clubs and leaving the final match early without reprimand was the very maximum amount of leeway you should get.

It’s just collection of the biggest and loudest idiots being loud and dumb as usual. Not much to be concerned with.

Truly pisses me off that the main narrative after one of our best and most comprehensive all-around performances in the league in years has boiled down to Ronaldo's temper tantrum.

It's a farce and I can't wait to get rid of this ongoing soap opera and circus as soon as possible

It's actually worse. The main narrative is the glazers, the club, us fans along with Ten Hag failed and disrespected Ronaldo.

Well done ETH for calling him out, was much needed.

Just going to be an ugly until he leaves now, but ETH seems like he's got him nicely worked out, so don't expect it to distract things, no matter how much the media will try their best to do.

Where was all the uproar in the summer when Ronaldo was being touted all over Europe for a new club after intimating at the end of last season that he was staying.
Its plain to see ETH doesnt like Ronaldo, whether its the way Ronaldo behaves in the dressing room or just down to the fact he doesnt suit his style. Its evident players love ETH, you seen it when he left Ajax, the amount of players that came out to wish him well and followed him to United is testament to the guy. Ronaldo wasnt wanted by anyone in the summer, United probably would have let him leave for free as well to give him what he wanted but still no one wanted him. His ego is the main thing that makes him the machine he is but its also the reason hes not wanted elsewhere.
His pressing and work rate isnt whats needed as shown by the results, we need something more than someone that can score goals, we need a team player that sacrifices for the team and not just themselves.

Exactly what Cristiano wanted.

Never seen anything more fitting. Graemmy Souness writing for Daily Arsehole.

Pathetic person writing for a pathetic news outlet, goes hand in hand..

And that guy which I assume is a cricket player based on what I read here?

Oh my what an absolute jackass. Manchester United social media page putting his cretinous face on a post will be the highlight of his career.

Ronaldo should behave better, but I'm not ready to write him off. He's always been the star so this is a completely new situation for him. His behaviour is childish yes, but let's see how he responds in the upcoming weeks before we write him off completely.

ETH absolutely spot on the way he handled this situation. He's doing all the right things. Nobody is bigger than the club.
I feel like people have been saying similar for like a full month already. The mediocre performances in front of our faces right now also count. We'll play worse trying to fit him, possibly drop points, then he might score a goal one game and it'll be GOAT is back to business, haterz in shambles. That Everton postgame was embarrassing stuff. These people almost had me convinced that goal was for sure going to undo him being 37. Couldn't even wait to see it sustained longer than a half.

I mean, he was a major part of one of the biggest sporting occasions in England in my lifetime, and on top of that won a World Cup, as well as being their 6th all time top run scorer (was 4th when he retired). He’s a bit of an egotistical prick who majorly fell out with his entire team whilst the leader (sound familiar?) but he had a wonderful career.

It's crazy, it really epitomises everything that's wrong with football, I was just reading through some comments on the United Instagram account and seeing tags like freeronaldo and tenhagout. These fans that support him are absolute doses and more worryingly seem to be the majority. Hopefully the club doesn't back down, as they may have done in the past, undermining the managers authority due to some negative social media engagement pish.

Part of me thinks rival pundits are deliberately pushing this bad publicity due to how good we dominated tottenham. Its like they think if they bombard united and ETH with bad press, we'd probably crumble and stop the good progress.

Rooney threw his toys out of the the pram too and was only convinced to stay by SAF and a massive new contract. I know that Ronaldo's act of petulance was public, but Rooney was a mercenary too. Both will always be legends. Just because things don't work out doesn't mean you can't still be a legend. Look at Keane and Stam - both left under a cloud for different reasons. Keane is without question a legend and some would argue that Stam is too.
Rooney was unhappy with United's ambitions because he felt they weren't spending money in the transfer market and buying much needed talent. And at the time, it was absolutely the case. If you see your club being eaten up by termites like Glazers, there is only so much you can do as a player, either display your frustration with the situation behind closed doors to your bosses or leave. I would have done the same if I was in his place. I don't think it is unprofessional to demand from your rich employers.

I'm glad he stayed and the rest is history.

I thank fergie massively for what he achieved here but his spectre hangs over the club heavily. He needs no more say in what happens here in regards to football decisions. That would never happen with Ole, ten Hag is a clean face with no alliances to the ways of old.
While I agree 100% with your general point, I also very much doubt that Fergie “told Ole” to do any such thing. We have no evidence that he’s taken (or been allowed by the board to take) such an active role in decision making.

Woodward asking for Fergie’s help in persuading Mendes / Ronnie seems far more likely. He wasn’t likely to refuse.

Edit: @Chesterlestreet got there three hours before me…

I’m almost sure that Ronaldo did not try to go to the likes of Barca (who had just signed Lewa) and Inter Milan. PSG also seems unlikely since they literally have no room.

The only clubs I believe were seriously tried for by his agent were Bayern and Chelsea.

The only one interested seemed to be Boehly, looks like the rest of the decision makers at Chelsea, including the manager, wanted no part of it despite needing a striker badly, Bayern did everything they could to completely deny that possibility every chance they could, they clearly wanted zero to do with him.
