What's also interesting is that there are studies showing that regularly heading a ball can cause head issues/trauma. Can't be too good for the player where he just suffered a head knock and is back to heading balls again 5 min later.
Yup. It's really not good. People forget how fragile the brain is, and that the skull can take only so many hit.

It's really not built to take multiple hits, which is why so many retired NFL players have problems like CTE:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chronic_traumatic_encephalopathy

Football is really behind in having the necessary protocol, as @Pogue Mahone mentioned. That just doesn't make sense to me.

Clearly, the player's reactions said it all, the panic on all the players as they waved straight away.

Fingers crossed he's okay, given the seriousness on of the injury it could be career threatening.

If the same happens with players feet, thr ref calls a foul. In that case it doesnt matter if the player whos late had bad intentions or deliberately tackle another player or not, nor if the player who gets hit gets injured or not as a result of the tackle.

In this case i agree with the op, this should be a foul agaisnt Cahill. I dont think it should had been a red card tho.

How on earth can Cahill predict his head will clash with Mason, in fact, why on earth would Cahill risk his own injury with his head!

Accidental clash of heads, nothing more. Fingers crossed he's okay.

The mirror reported that Van Persie would never see again after his reasonably minor eye injury last year so I hold hope that this is just a disgusting paper searching for clicks.
Yeah, it would be an absolutely disgusting piece of sensationalism (wouldn't put it past them, though).

Really hope it's not true.

It sounds similar to Cech injury years ago. if true, hopefully it's just an extradural haematoma with no brain injury and that they manage to remove it before causing any brain herniation.

It's not necessarily a worse foul if someone gets injured. Certainly the result of the foul should have zero impact on the refs decision. I've seen blatant, two-footed, studs-showing fouls where the fouled player is fine seconds later and also fair 50/50s that have resulted in compound fractures.

Cahill made an honest attempt to win the ball and was a fraction of a second slower to the ball than Mason. It happens all the time.
Made an honest attempt and now a young man's life is in danger...

I think the logic is that flying in feet first carries almost no risk to the assailant, so it's easy to assume they're either being malicious or - at best - deliberately reckless.

Flying in head first is so dangerous for both people that it's much more likely to be assumed a complete accident by someone who had no idea they would clash heads.
It's much less dangerous for the person applying the force with his head. Especially if hitting a player that's not expecting a challenge.

Not much of an argument imo. In the NFL you had players flying in head first to do the most damage to opponent. That's thankfully been banned now as of recently.

Well this looks like shitty news. Hopefully it's overblown

As a side point, i can see our match Thursday possibly being delayed if it's as serious as the reports

It wasn't deliberate but it was reckless and dangerous play IMO. Mason has the natural position to win the ball and Cahill comes marauding in from about 15 yards away.

Yikes, didn't realise it was that serious.

Let's hope he makes a full recovery.

If false they've crossed the line. It one thing reporting bs transfer rumours and everyday football stories but this is a persons life!

Ryan is in a stable condition and is expected to remain in hospital for the next few days.

Everyone at the Club would like to express their sincere thanks for the excellent and swift care given to Ryan by both the Accident and Emergency department and Neurosurgery Unit at St Mary’s Hospital.

Well, yes.

Do you think it was deliberate?
It was a foul because he misjudged the trajectory of the ball, it's the same situation than when a player kick the leg of the opponent when he tries to shoot. It's not deliberate, it's not a big foul but it's a foul.

Football will become completely non-contact at this rate. Two players going in hard for the ball, no intent to hurt one another just to get the ball and get it cleared/towards goal. It's what football is about and obviously no one wants to see anyone hurt, it's part and parcel of the game and its the risk players take when they step on to the field.

Hopefully he's okay and can recover with no issue.

And I do think Cahill's challenge was stupid. Not deliberate, but reckless and dumb. He had no chance to get the ball.

Situations like this need to be avoided in the future.
