So what's next for Sir Gareth Southgate?

I'm old enough to remember 1966. Alf Ramsey was "dreary", "boring" and made shocking selections. Remember what happened?
Just saying!

English fans and media can be fickle. Weve heard terms like golden generation before and these teams fizzled hard. Southgate may have good players to choose from but not good enough to expect world cup success. This England team isnt Spain 2010, Brazil 2002 or France 98 level. Southgate has done better than every England manager for 60 years and has been the closest to realising the lofty expectations of England football fans.

Im also curious as to who woudl replace him? Surely English football is big enough to pick an Englishman. Ive heard Howe and Potter. So basically Graham Potter is the key to the World Cup? The French with Mbappe and Benzema upfront will be so glad he took the Chelsea job so they now have a chance to defend their title.
We will likely never get the draws we had in the last two tournaments ever again.

England probably won't win another WC till it's held in England again. Nearly did it with the Euro's. Euro 96 was nearly too.

Southgate probably goes down as a nearly manager. Very fortunate draw in 2018.

Usually England don't travel to well.

The fact England had the plumb draw to the final, they were at home in nearly every match, played a opponent in the final that had come through a really tough run of fixtures, scored a really early goal in the final to go ahead.

And still ... found a way to lose.

I've said it before, but with Southgate ( and in general ), England's fear of losing far out weights the idea of winning.

I’m not English…but have watched them a lot over the years. Your diamond shoes are too tight.

At one point , you literally had the best players in the world in your squad and were completely shite. No manager maximised that potential. From an outsiders point of view Southgate has done much better with a far less gifted group. He introduced young players and found formations to get the best out of what he has to great effect. Bar sticking with his favourites too often he hasn’t seemed to bow to public option at all and has rarely gotten it wrong.

Also, because of his name, everyone was waiting for him to slip so they could kick him when he was down and bring in someone to play sexier football.

I’m astounded by the arrogance of England fans calling for him to be replaced. No international team dominates for long these days. Italy win the thing then fail to qualify for the next one. England have decent players that excel in the systems of some great managers at club level. Trying to pull those pieces together is going to be a challenge for any manager.

if any manager deserves for a country to stick with him it’s Southgate.
Those people aren’t worth wasting time on. Southgate isn’t going anywhere and nor should he. He’s done a fantastic job on the whole, he just needs to work on his timings for changes to be a little more proactive and it’ll be grand.

Anyone who thinks Southgate is a great manager is an idiot.
Hes fecking shocking and I find it funny he's got the England job. He's totally out of depth and was helped massively by the draws he had.

Be interesting in the world Cup though.

Maguire Shaw Philips have hardly kicked a ball this season and they were massive for England. I'd be interested to see how he navigates around it.

I'm certain we'll finish 2nd in the group behind Wales. Then out in the last 16. Euro 2020 really was the chance of a generation..

The FA have dropped a bollock, should have lined up Potter for post-WC after the embarrassing last intl break. Now that option has gone and can't see Howe leaving Bournemouth. No idea who would be a good appointment now.
Hopefully that FA have more of a clue

Relegated England in the Nations League.

Relegation is exactly what Southgate would achieve were he managing a club in the premier league.

Strange he keeps sticking with the so called 3-4-3 which is really a 5.

Bit like Tuchel at Chelsea at the moment.

Is that set up dead?

There is only so long the club England act can play before it gets stale. Time to go.

Much like we should really have sacked Ole after the Europa League final, we should really be sacking Southgate before the World Cup. It's clear he's reached the end of the road.

But like Utd, England will bottle it and stick with him and we'll have a dreadful tournament.

Sack him and bring someone who can actually manage and coach.

The FA should pay good money for an actual top coach, or it'll be the same again. Generation after generation of poor managers.

If he isn't sacked it's pretty laughable to be honest. Idiotic to go into the world Cup with him.

i believe we’ll have an early exit from the world cup and he’ll go. We have an unearthly amount of top attacking talent atm and are weak defensively and he persists in playing to our weaknesses with this negative defensive dirge

You got to blame the FA and somehow they instilled culture of mediocrity over generations. After the Euros we had Southgate as a hero for gallantly losing in the final to an Italy team couldn't even qualify for the next world cup. In Brazil or Germany there would have been a bounty on his head after that final.

His football decisions looking like he himself wants out. That wasn't even disappointing, just plain boring. Where is the will to take revenge for the final ?

Get somebody who wants to win at all cost for a change.

Thing is he’d play the same system?
Yeah maybe, I'm just thinking he went into Chelsea and in the short term turned them around.

We have a very talented squad and Tuchel is a good cup manager. I don't think he'd want to be long term England manager but he might be tempted for the World Cup.

I just basically think we need to get Southgate out, we can all see he's reached the end.

Just read that only two teams have failed to score from open play in this Nations League tournament. The other is San Marino....

With England you inherit a very strong squad generally. I wouldn't be against Tuchel at all.

Surely we could tempt Tuchel to take over , even if just for the World Cup.
A bit left field but I've for a while been of the belief club managers should be allowed to do the tournaments and leave coaching staff to do the mundane qualifiers they're too busy for. There's simply not enough high quality coaches at international level, it's either managers who aren't good enough or ones that use to be because the one's still bang in their prime by and inlarge want the day to day.

It's why i fancy Germany (or atleast did until I saw the assessment from some of the German posters) or Spain in Qatar, they both have a huge advantage over the rest on the coaching scale.

Are your CBs still passing the ball a lot to eachother so you are still pretending you are playing modern posession based football?

The World Cup has weirdly crept up, I didn’t even realise these games are the last before it.

England are in terrible shape and I don’t even mean 3-5-2.

Genuinely just get Jose as a caretaker whilst the domestic season is on hold. Knows most of the players, thrives in knock out football, won’t give a shit if the press get on his case and will rile up other managers.

Totally out of his depth. Benefited from a combination of favourable draws and in form players during the last two competitions. His luck has finally ran out and it’s time to go.

So, is Shaw the only current United player to score in a major international cup final?

Can't remember if Ronaldo scored in the Portugal final.
No it was Eder, scorer of goals in the final vs France.

Cant remember for the life of me who scored in the Nations League but it wasnt Ronaldo.
