Watched Once upon a time in Anatolia and have been pondering about it for last 40 mins or so.... Not sure what to make of it as of now. Would love to discuss it more here with those who have seen it some time soon!

I think it's probably the best film I've seen this year.

I thought that Clark Gable bit was one of the weaker bits. It took me right out of the film, I started trying to remember exactly what Clark Gable looked like and how similar to him that bloke was, and thinking about how well-known Gable would be in Turkey and whether that was a reference they'd get, and yeah, suspension of disbelief pretty much fecked off.

Sinister

The story is a bit of a horror cliché but it was more scary than your average horror film I thought. It's about a troubled writer (Ethan Hawke) that moves into this big house with his family where some murders took place and finds a box in the attic that has footage of this and some other murders. Some creepy stuff but I can't help to think the movie could have been a lot more scary, especially near the end. Albeit well worth a watch, especially for horror fans. 6/10

Ooh. Though I could do without Cumberbatch.

McQueen's interesting at any rate. I LOVED 'Bear'... shut up Mockney... but thought the hunger strike one was shite.

Strange...if I had to visualize a real Plech, I'd think of Cumberbatch. Probably with a tinny voice and a few moles.

Pauldyson1uk you should have your own thread: Pauldy's (cos everyone seems to call you that), rotten tomatoes. He watches shite, so you don't have to!

I watch the shit, so that when I watch a good film I enjoy it more, I could say that but truth be known I like watching crappy films and crappy SyFy film are a weakness of mine, but The Sweeney is still one of the worst films I have seen this year.

Spoilers about plot and ending
I have been thinking about two bits-

- The one where the sequence of apple falling is shown for about 90 seconds

- The ending where the doctor chooses to omit that detail

What do you think about these two things?

I reckon the apple falling to rest and rot among other rotten apples represent journey of any man in accordance with pessimistic or skeptical take of humanity by the movie. Essentially that is what happens with the doctor in the end, blood on his face bit make it more explicit.

Watched Looper last night. Thought it was crap.

Also watched Up the other day which was class. The bird made me laugh out loud a lot.

I thought it was a nice bit of dark, gallows type of humour that told us a bit about the prosecutor as a person. It was he himself who suggested the likeness so I'm not sure if the others actually knew what he looked like and just played along.

That film was very good, but odd. It started off as a really moving and emotional fim, and then went batshit crazy.

I'd agree with this. The 'snuff' movies were pretty creepy. Good performance from Hawke but my God his wife was annoying.

Like you said, not sure if the 'twist' ending really added anything to the film at all.

Looper is the best movie ever, you idiot. Up was shit though

You happy now, Solius? :D

I'm never happy with you Escobar.

Oh I also watched The Prestige. Superb.

Got an 8hr boat trip so it's movie time.

Watched Le Mépris but I'm not really sure what to make of it. Too much symmetry and repetition for me even though the characters were well developed and the pacing was spot on as always. Brigette Bardot was excellent as the annoying, preening, contemptuous wife. Just seemed like there was too much focus on making it a well-made movie rather than a great movie.

Started watching Nagisa Oshima but there's far too many old man dicks and bushy vags for a boat trip! Seemed a strange movie. Worth seeing through some other time?

The score was the best thing about Le Mépris. Scorsese later used it in Casino.

In the Realm of the Senses, right? I've yet to see it.

I spent the last half hour checking how close the film was to ending and deciding to myself that I was going to Google pictures of Emily Blunt's tits afterwards.

True Romance (1993) - 6

Some great scenes, lots of poor ones. Pretty stylish but just a really silly plot. Not for me.

Had a double bill this evening...

Hellboy - Very good. Set's up the characters and the world well, but it's not quite as good as...

Hellboy 2 - Which is quite brilliant... I would say it's easily in my top 3 comic book films of the past 15 years.

I'm pretty sure about what happens with the end. The night before he just couldn't let go with the prosecutor's story, had to impose his rationalism. The upshot was that he basically ruined the guy's life.

Then at the end he has a choice. The murder is a clusterfeck. One man's dead. The killer was probably sleeping with the wife, and claims to be the boy's father. He's destroyed. The boy's going through the mill. There's the mentally retarded brother who had a hand in the killing. The doctor can add into this the nice little detail that the guy was buried alive. Or he can just let it lie. Having learnt a bit of wisdom in the last few minutes, he lets it lie.

As for the apple, at the time I thought it was just a metaphor for being at the whim of fate, but then by the end I thought it was all about the loss of youth. Which fits into the other point... it's a rite of passage film, the doctor's passing from youth to maturity.

Gayby Minuscule budget and a plot that could have been a disaster but ended up being quite a charming twist on a romcom. No Oscar winner but a reasonably pleasant way to pass 90 mins. 7/10

Flight A great start followed by high level "oh I'm an alcoholic" melodrama. With lesser actors this would be rubbish but the superb cast makes it is worth watching. Just. 7/10

A Christmas Carol (1984)

This is one of my guilty pleasure films, I watch it every Christmas. This version with George C Scott is maybe the best.

7/10

The really old one with Alastair Sim is my favourite.
