Serious question, what's wrong with China?
Have you seen Brits on holidays? They go to somewhere hotter that's still Britain. They likes what they likes. China is on the other side of the globe, the cultures share few similarites, the language are nothing a like and the actual football there would be a letdown. Not everyone can adapt to this kind of change.

As for what's wrong with China there's a lot. Pollution, corruption, people disappear for speaking against the government. Nothing the average footballer will care about in his bubble.

It's also one of the most beautiful countries on the planet.

You could easily be a typical brit abroad there. Western food, English spoken in your personal bubble.

Fair play if Rooney didn't fancy it but he would be a stratospheric star there. Far and above anything he'd experience elsewhere.

because its a shit hole

what the guy above me said
Calling China a shit hole is very obtuse. It's one of the most beautiful countries on the entire planet.

Admittedly I don't know what club would pay enough money and where they would be based... But it's a huge country and certainly more parts beautiful than it is smoggy and grim.

Doesn't matter how beautiful it is if you live in a bubble. Also, when you're a footballer you don't have much time to see it. You're stuck in a smog filled city with no friends or family.

Tbh we are probably giving China more stick than it deserves. Or we are giving it an unfair review.

I was in Shanghai last year and that is probably the most accommodating place in China for westerners. There are western brands, food, fashion, tourists (not as many as I thought though) almost everywhere. I can't speak for other cities like Guangzhou, Changchun, Qinhuangdao which I'm told are less globalised than Shanghai and Beijing. The weather is also very extreme in many parts of China, especially northern China where some of the Chinese super league clubs are based. I was also amazed at how little the public spoke English or other languages as they are far more advanced in certain aspects than us.

All in all though, if you are a foreign footballer in China and paid as handsomely as we are told, then you will have no problem out there, especially if you are on your own. They will do all they can to make sure you are settled and you will live like a king (whilst a sizable proportion of the population live in poverty)

Rooney with Coleen and the kids will be a tricky one for the Chinese businessmen to settle in to China though.

The pollution is the main thing really. On a bad day you do wonder what the feck you're doing there, I can imagine it's worse when you don't really need to be like Rooney. Whilst he could afford to make where he lives safe (air filtration system etc) putting your kids in that situation and choosing to not have much of a life outside of your apartment is a bit daft when financially unnecessary.

Think the MLS would be a better move for him

You are seriously underrating Everton if you need to ask this question.
Wherever he goes he's going on a ceremonial lap let's be honest.

He'd struggle to get a game at Everton.

If he sidesteps and becomes the biggest star in China there's value there. All of the fanfare and packed airports when he flies in. Ego inflation week on week.

He'll make a career choice that suits himself and his family. Any potential move to China shouldn't be seen as a distant runner up though. It's an obscene amount of money and there are definite upsides.

This would be my biggest concern too. Air quality.

I don't know every team that's throwing money around but to use an awful comparison; playing for a London side and living in Cobham. If there's that kind of equivalence it would be less of a factor.

The pollution is shocking but for me the food is worse. Am never sure it's safe. Thats a deal breaker for me.

Yeah but footy will be in the major cities. Overcrowded, polluted etc. Not great.

We're also forgetting the quality of managers that the money is bringing in. Eriksson, Villas-Boas, Poyet, Scolari, Pellegrini, Magath.

Rate those guys as high as you like but for me they're all 2nd tier managers who've managed great players and won things.

At the very least the clubs are offering big money to managers who will no doubt bring staff, instill a level of professionalism. Players that go there aren't walking into some horror show. People speak of China as if it's at the level of conference teams.

I think he will stay, his wage here is enough for him and even though he will not be playing much, he feels like he is still well respected within the club by staffs and players.

I hope he stays and signs a new "seniors" contract with us. Might not happen but in my ideal world Rooney would stay with us as a senior player that signs 1 year extensions each year at a lower wage.

Why though? Does he really have anything positive to offer even in a subdued role?

He's has put in some good performances of the bench. Got that Hull goal recently. I would love to have a red hot young striker with Rooney being behind him, playing whenever he needs a rest and being a mentor. He's a club legend to me and is one of the few players left from one of our most successful periods.

The parts left alone are nice, the parts that are in cities, where he'll be are not.
It's grim

Not conference but more than likely not even championship level

Don't think it's as easy to get rid of him as many suggest and I won't be surprised if he's a United player next season too.

He has a great contract, and any team would be crazy to get anywhere near that wage. Isn't even worth 70k IMO. Will United subsidise his wages? And even if they do tk a great extent what team would have him that Rooney would want to play for?

Maybe USA, maybe China, but I still believe he will stay at United.

If he has no pride then he may stay but if he has he won't. There's no way he will get a game time next season. Not even in League Cup.
The press got it right when they said "It is hard to imagine Wayne Rooney accepting another campaign next year as a bit part player and with Mourinho targeting his attack for improvement and strengthening in the summer the lure of China or America and regular football will become more and more appealing as the climax to the season unfolds."

Perhaps. Or maybe he backs himself enough to fight for his place. I don't know. But clubs in the big leagues in Europe either doesn't need him or can't afford him.

I'm not saying there's no chance of him going. But I'm not surprised if he's here another year.

Rooney has 3 young kids, I doubt he will move far away and I don't blame him for it. If he leaves it could only be Everton but I don't think they'd want him.

It is neither here nor there for me whether he stays or not but I really get the feeling with the club laying it on thick over the last couple of weeks due to the record that his status is extremely well respected within the club. Especially with Jose's words about him choosing his fate. I am not ruling out the possibility of how Jose wording it but I wouldn't be surprised if towards the end of his deal the club offers him some sort of rolling deal. Depends how rabid Stretford is and whether he wants to up the deal but I really think that last deal had so much intertwined into it (image rights, commercial revenue etc.) that the club with the financial health it exudes will probably have an actuarial outlook on the twilight of his career finishing at the club. He could even retire a little bit early just after the World Cup.

I think he's an important figure to have around, very low maintenance personality for the contribution on and off the field he brings.

Personally I wouldn't totally rule out Man City

I doubt Rooney's loyalty to United, his wife and kids will want to stay in the North East, City are small time enough to do it ("welcome to Manchester" etc), they'd probably want to brag that they have United's all time top scorer, they'll pay him well, if Aguero leaves then Pep may want a 'mentor' for Jesus.

Serious question, what makes you think rooney will be a good mentor to anyone? That guy positional sense is crap

I'm sure the City reserves have enough strikers

Even when he was at his peak, with a host of top European clubs interested, the furthest afield he could envisage himself going was Man City. If he was wants to play for England in 2018 he won't go to China/USA, if he wants to stay in England he's going to have to take a big pay cut and drop in stature, none of the big 6 should want him and he would get about as much playing time as he does here, can't see Everton fans being welcoming, you're basically left with West Ham.

I can see him seeing out his contract at United.

If Rooney stays it could be that he feels that the club will win the league next season and he would like to leave the club as a winner, even if he would be a sub...

I can't even see him getting the 5 games needed to get a medal unless Mou gives him some sympathy appearances, and why on earth would he do that?

Hughes will take him. The Brittania has become a refuge for the unwanted, the previously great, and those with unfulfilled promises:

Arnautovic, Berahino, Bojan, Shaqiri, Rooney, Affelay.

Why has he given him 29 appearances halfway through this season?

If Rooney's still at the club next year then obviously he will still be part of the managers plans. In which case barring injury he will still make 20-40 appearances.

He'll go to the MLS probably. We're only going to strengthen our numbers and Jose will make the situation clear to him in the summer.

If he has Beckham syndrome of wanting to be the England big shot then he'll realise he has to move for regular games. His media team certainly like to portray him as so.

I think he'll leave for another Prem club in order to secure an England place for Russia 2018. The second he goes to USA or China his England career is over.

 - must have just been positional luck to be in the right place to become leading scorer for club and country!
If he had great positional sense he would have evolved into a poacher as his legs deteriorated.
