Never said "only" but 90% of SAF's signings were potential! some worked out spectacularly well and some didn't! He wasn't like Jose constantly looking for ready made quick fixes.
My bad. Yes in terms of Jose is more experienced 28 plus, but that only works when you need 1/2 players to complete a team not when you build one.

There is no point going for direct fixes in this team when we are not going to challenge the top 2.

We rather build for 18 months time when the players we have mature and will hopefully be more consistent.

I never get this criticism. What do we want our managers to say? that we will win the league next year? We will go unbeaten all year or that finishing 4th is a failure and the players should be ashed. That's the United way , just say how great we are and lie.

Ole has to deal with the hand he has got. He can put requests in and ask to buy this and that player to improve us but it's not all going to happen instantly, negotiations take time and quite frankly the players who will improve our team have better offers.
I think you are missing the point. Moyes was lambasted for using the incorrect phrases and was never forgiven for it. Fact is that he promised us much more than what he is delivering thats not fiction its fact and it is promises he made to us not the other way around.

I really think Ole has to get a champions league spot this season, whether it be through top 4 or winning Europa league. If he does, he will be allowed carry on the rebuild. If he doesn't he will be relieved of his duties and Poch will get the Job. imo

Think Ole's problem is that he contradicts himself, saying last season that players would be gone after the Everton debacle, but most of the players gone were not involved, and some of the ones who were are still here. Saying if players go they would be replaced. That has not happened, so either it is bad planning or Ed made promises, as he does, that he could not or never intended to keep. How fit he was going to get them, then complains how lethargic they are. I'm afraid Ole is just one of those people who will shoot themselves in the foot when they speak, he doesn't mean to but it happens.

 Comparing him to Zidane and Pep. Well done.

Yeah we better get used to when we hire average managers and then believe they are comparable to Zidane and Pep.

Not 90%, but a significantly large portion.
Didn't remember it like this. Zaha was bloody expensive. Persie pretty high too for being the last year of his contract compared to a very young Rooney. Although inflation is a big factor too. Very much money on Bebe too.

Young and De Gea pretty cheap I think based on what they had done. Jones quite high, but he was young and english.
Van der Sar a steal. Didn't think he was that cheap and that must be our best buy out of all of these. Ronaldo of course a steal too with hindsight.

Not 90%, but a significantly large portion.
That’s quite frankly an embarrassing list to use to prove any point.
How many of those were even bought with the remote idea if the first team in mind?

Let’s play another stupid game:

Nuno Morais (Penafiel) – free
Jiri Jarosik (CSKA Moscow) – £3m
Asier del Horno (Athletic Bilbao) – £8m
Lassana Diarra (Le Havre) – £2m
Salomon Kalou (Feyenoord) – £3m
John Obi Mikel (Lyn Oslo) – £16m
Khalid Boulahrouz (Hamburg) – £9m
Tal Ben Haim (Bolton Wanderers) – free
Steve Sidwell (Reading) – free
Juliano Belletti (Barcelona) – £3.7m
Luis Jimenez (Ternana) – £4.7m
Sulley Muntari (Portsmouth)
£12.7m
Victor Obinna (Chievo) – free
Thiago Motta (Genoa) – £3.6m
Kerlon (Chievo) – free
Goran Pandev (Lazio) – free
McDonald Mariga (Parma) – £4.3m
Sergio Canales (Racing Santander) – £3.8m
Pedro Leon (Getafe) – £8.4m
Hamit Altintop (Bayern Munich) – free
Jose Callejon (Espanyol) – £4.4m
Raphael Varane (Lens) – £8.8m
Diego Lopez (Sevilla) – £3.2m
Marco van Ginkel (Vitesse) – £9m
Mark Schwarzer (Fulham) – free
Kurt Zouma (St Etienne) – £12m
Mo Salah (Basle) – £11m
Loic Remy (Queens Park Rangers) – £8m
Asmir Begovic (Stoke City) – £8m
Baba Rahman (Augsburg) – £21.7m
Kenedy (Fluminense) – £6.7m
Papy Djilobodji (Nantes) – £2.2m
Michael Hector (Reading) – £4m
Marco Amelia (free agent) – free

All managers, even the cheque book ones buy plenty of players with “potential” if you’re gonna try and paint it like that.

And this list of lesser known or punts doesn’t even include Porto.

It's good to reflect on.

I can't for the life of me remember Angelo Hernriquez

Our standard has been dropping since Glazers bought the team. Alex was a miracle worker to win with an aging team. Deep down he probably knows he wouldn’t survive if he stay on for another 2-3 years. I doubt we will win another championship unless we get ourselves another miracle worker who is tactically astute, keen eye for talent as well as good in developing talent. As far Ole has not fulfil 2 of the 3 requirements. The jury is still out for talent spotting. As years goes by, Utd fans would just be like a Tottenham, Everton, West Ham team which will never win any trophies. Sad days ahead.......sigh.......

That's 13 Premier League titles, five FA cups, two UEFA Champions League titles and a knighthood.

Not too embarrassing.

Embarrassing for you to use to show Fergie bought mainly loads of potential.

See my Jose list above, if you believe Fergie bought Greening or Manucho or Hernriquez etc you’re very wrong. It’s standard practice and any manager, Mourinho included would look like he buys mainly potential with this kind of silly list.

We did buy some dross though that just disappeared into the ether.
As I say, standard practice. That’s why you have a scouting network, all clubs buy shit loads of dross based on scouting reports.

I still expect some level of common sense in here but I swear, some would use Jose’s list to prove he’s not a cheque book manager if it fit with their terrible argument.

Not sure what your problem with this list is?

It's sounds like the facts don't align with the whatever narrative you were trying to spin so now your saying, "well the facts are stupid anyway, everyone does that, I wasn't specifically talking about those kind of transfers"

I haven't followed this debate, I saw the one comment and thought it would be interesting to look at SAF transfer history.

I really think Ole has to get a champions league spot this season, whether it be through top 4 or winning Europa league. If he does, he will be allowed carry on the rebuild. If he doesn't he will be relieved of his duties and Poch will get the Job. imo
That should be exactly happens and I will be good with that. If this half of the season continues like the first and we end up in 7th in May should be the end for Ole. But to go into next season while Pochettino is free would be a feck up of the highest order.

Did Real Madrid drop their standards hiring Zidane ? Or Barcelona with Pep?

Not mention both were appointed permanent manager but Ole earned his permanent contract himself tbf. We didn't drop any of our standards hiring Ole. Our standards or expectation were dropped just because we suck and fans gradually get used to it.
If either Pep or Klopp were producing performances that we're seeing from Ole then they would of been out the door at the end of last season. If it was Everton then maybe he could be given more time. Of course we have no devine right to anything but being one of the worlds top clubs raises expectations to another level and contrary to what people believe it is possible to show signs that we are continually improving even under a rebuild.

It’s not SAF’s transfer history though is it? It’s United’s whilst SAF was here.

SAF signed players for the first team squad but obviously has nothing to do with signing Dong from China or dozens or other names in that list who were brought in by the club from scouting reports.

As I say, Jose Mourinho looks like a guy who mainly buys potential if you include all the players his clubs bought for their academy’s and reserve teams whilst he was there.

Or @Lynty, are you actually claiming that SAF for example flew out to Togo to scout and sign Souleymane Mamam from La Semeuse Lomé?

Common sense please pal before wading into a debate.

A huge portion of the players SAF bought for the first team squad were established or top top players, that’s the point and it’s factual.

Next reply from him fits in well here:

When SAF had weaknesses, he’d often fill it with an experienced player and get the cheque book out.
Once he had a strong team he had no problems taking a punt.

He wasn’t a cheque book manager like Mourinho no, but he also wasn’t naive enough to just focus on youth. He’d always buy players to set the standards for the potential and youth.

Regarding the offended comment, no, but I’m so tired of the miserable excuses for our 38% win percentages or the daft comparisons to SAF and Klopp’s start, not only did both have miles better first seasons, they were proven top drawer managers.

The stupidy needs to stop, back Ole to the hilt if you must be at least admit it’s generally done on blind faith alone.
It is pointless as some people have no idea about the United of a few years back. We have been breaking the bank for a long time to get what we want. Robbo before SAF, Pallister the record fee for a defender, Roy Keane then the highest transfer fee, Rooney then the highest for someone under 20, Rio the most expensive British player and so on. So we paid when needed to. The sundries SAF bought were just sundries. He got rid of them and even players like WC winner Barthez when they failed to produce the goods.
As for Blanc and Evra being nobodies? Blanc was the rock of France when the won the WC although he missed the Final. And Evra was making a big name for himself in France. Most of the team SAF had when he introduces youngsters already has the foundation of very experienced players already established. The established players he got were already Internationals before they came to United.

In 18 months, there will be a new manager (unless Ole pulls off a miracle) and we'll be asking that the new manager be given 18 months to prove himself.
This is 2020 and these days managers get 12 months to prove themselves. Moyes only got 10 months!
Mediocrity is now widely accepted in this fan base and it is sad to see. If were to get relegated, I'm sure some fans would claim that this is just part of the process.
LCFC hired a new manager and within 12 months are in the top 3. Who would've thought that if a player moves from LCFC to MUFC, it is actually a demotion (albeit with a pay rise).
Let's wait and see how Arteta does, because my guess is that AFC will be above us in the league, within 12 months.
I am also keeping an eye on Spurs. They hired a new manager and my suspicion is that they will finish this season above us.

It has now become a seriously awkward situation. What if Ole is allowed to bring even more players in, but then nothing improves or even gets worse? Then a new manager comes in, with the right ideas, but really does not rate the lads that Ole has brought in? I want to cry.

We are banking as you say on the youngster become the basis of our team and the ones we buy become even better. What if they don't?

Araenal are only 4 points behind us now @sunama but it wouldn’t matter if we finish 7th with Spurs & Arsenal above us because the “they have better squads” excuse will be out again.
There’s nothing that’ll convince many fans that coaching and management are in fact the most important thing at a football club and can be the difference between 12th (Puel) and 2nd (Brendon).

But that was not 2020?

I don't understand what your point is in the post tbh.

Moyes got 10 months because it was clear that the job is too big for him, he had a pre season and bought Fellaini and Mata. The club were right to get rid of him.

LCFC is a clear example of appointing the correct coach, you don't need to have 2 years of rebuild.

  Ok sure, if you want to look at it like that.

At the end of the day, that was a transfer policy set up, managed and implemented by Ferguson (who also selected his own team of trusted scouts). He was ultimately responsible for both the gems and the turds. That's the role of a manager in every employment sector. I do very little actual work in my job (I'm on here right now); but I set a culture in the work place, select appropriate people to fill intermediary positions to whom I can delegate or trust to facilitate my vision and I do so with minimal front line staff interaction. I'm responsible for the performance of the service area I manage, and poor staff recruitment would also be my responsibility - even if I've never met the offenders before.

I agree with you though, SAF did go out and get the big players he wanted in the positions needed. As the best manager of all time and us being guaranteed contenders for both EPL and UCL every year - we could afford that luxury.

 Comparing him to Zidane and Pep. Well done.

Yeah we better get used to when we hire average managers and then believe they are comparable to Zidane and Pep.
You seem to not even understand what I said. I did not compare Ole, Zidane and Pep. I only compared their appointments.

Could you tell me what exactly Zidane or Pep had done, won, achieved or showed as a manager prior to their appointment to justify it?

I don't know tbh. Zidane wasn't sacked when Real was like 5th, 6th this season if my memory serves me right.

However imo Ole will be sacked if he's the manager of Real or Barca. Their standards and expectation are much higher than us anyway.

Oh I understood. Hiring an average manager who happens to be an ex player results in a lowering of your standards. Hiring a top class manager (or potential top manager) who happens to be an ex player doesn't.

Because he used to play for us. That's it, that's the only reason anybody is defending him and if they say it's not they are lying to everyone or to themselves.

You cannot compare the situation to Zidane, Pep etc, why? Because they actually did things with their clubs to give the club and the fans a reason to stick with them and be excited. Pep changed alot of modern day football as well as winning, and Zidane won a treble of Champions Leagues. Nobody can name anything Ole is doing on this team except 'changing the culture' and continuously playing garbage players like Lingard, but because he's an ex player it's fine, any other club and he'd of been binned off by now, simple as that really.

I don’t think that’s what he’s saying, more the fact that Ole has been a manager for what? almost a decade and proving to be not all that great.

You've changed the direction of the debate tbh. Whether Ole is an average manager or not prior to the Utd job is another subject and we didn't discuss that here.

My point was prior to their appointment Pep and Zidane has done nothing to justify them being a top class manager or even potential top class manager. But did Real or Barca lower their standards by doing so? Definitely no. If Pep and Zidane suck at their job and Real or Barca still keep them then we can say they've lowered their standards. Hiring unproven managers (of course you must believe in their abilities) has nothing to do with lowering standards. Keeping unperformed managers is however lowering standards.

Back to Utd. Ole was appointed as a caretaker and he earned himself the permanent contract with his good results. Did we lower our standards by doing so? Definitely no.

The "we've dropped our standards by hiring Ole" is just bs tbh.

Because they actually did things with their clubs to give the club and the fans a reason to stick with them and be excited. Pep changed alot of modern day football as well as winning, and Zidane won a treble of Champions Leagues
This is after their appointments.

Zidane and Pep actually did things with their squad. Big fecking surprise, Pep had a core consisting of a good chunk of the Spanish EC and WC winners topped off with Messi, Zizou’s situation wasn’t exactly bleak either, with the likes of Kroos, Modric, Benzema, Carvajal, Marcelo, Ronaldo, etc. Who the feck do we have that compares?

This isn’t to take anything away from them, but to lambast Ole for not achieving when he instead inherited a squad of slack mercenaries, youngsters and some mediocre players to make up the numbers... it’s in no way comparable. He also was lucky enough to get a De Gea who can’t even catch a cold these days, and a perenially injured Pogba. How the feck do you glibly compare Ole’s record to Pep and Zidane’s considering all that?

By the way, that’s me neverminding the fact that we had a marvel of a man in charge for 26 years, who had everything humming perfectly for his reign, only to see the winning culture and institutional memory ripped out of the walls by Moyes because he wanted to be his own man.

I am in no way sure Ole is the man to take us forward, but what I do know is that a ton of people on here are not thinking seriously about just how messed up our situation is. Add to that the fact that our name still carries weight, so we are still a cup final for a lot of teams. The fact that this squad is wobbling is perfectly understandable, and this squad is threadbare compared to what Moyes, Van Gaal and Mourinho were working with.

By the way, blanket assertions about what causes people to defend Ole is poor form.

You can call it poor form, but it's not a lie is it? There's nothing else to defend him on

It's true that Pep and Zidane had unbelievable players, cannot deny that at all, but other managers of Real Madrid and Barcelona have had unbelievable players in their squad too and have failed where these two have succeeded, so it's not a guarantee of success is it?

Ole has been a manager for over 10 years now I believe? And he's done what, exactly? Our name may carry some weight but I can guarantee you Solksjaer's does not in comparison, especially if we continue playing like this. We are going to become Liverpool at this rate, if we aren't already there, and I don't mean Klopp's new Liverpool

Could you tell me what exactly Pep or Zidane had done, won, achieved or showed as a manager prior to their appointment to justify them being a top class manager or potential top class manager ?
Nothing. But that's what they turned out to be. It's the difference between your main number 9 being a young unproven RVP or young unproven Troy Deenie. Both may be unknown quantities to many, but standards definitely fall in one of the two scenarios.

And you don't have to have 'done' something incredible to have potential. That's why it's called potential. Pep, like a young Ronaldo/Fabregas, would have been hugely impressive in his ideas and tactical understanding of football not to mention in his small Barca B stint or what have you.
