I’m hoping results go Scotland’s way, they could do with Italy winning here I think. They are going to have to beat Argentina by at least 2 to stand any chance at all though.

I used to have no interest in Women’s football, due to lack of overall quality. It’s getting a lot better now, I hope it continues to grow

Wasn't a penalty that.

Is Marta wearing lipstick? Don't think i've seen a female footballer use it during a game before.

Italy 1-0 down, 40 seconds to go, get a free kick in own half, seemed likely last chance (as it happens, it wasnt). Six players and a goalie in own half/halfway area, four up against eleven Brazilians.

There's caution and there's CAUTION!
Goal difference decided the group. Another goal for Oz, another one scored by Brazil and Oz top the group. Overcautious but the basic instruction is understandable at that stage.

Wednesday is Group D Day:
Japan vs England 20:00 - BBC One
Scotland vs Argentina 20:00 - BBC Four

After two matches everyone still has something to play for because the group looks like this:
Team GD Pts
England 2 6
Japan. 1 4
Argentina -1 1
Scotland -2 0

If Argentina win they're in the next round. If Scotland win, they may go through.

England only need a draw to top the group. The group winner ends up on the France (and probably USA) side of the draw. Japan are playing for first, second or third but are qualified somewhere whatever the result.

erm... with Japan & England both having qualified but not wanting to win - to avoid FRA & USA

that game could get quite interesting, :D

Interesting to see the philosophical consistency between the women’s and men’s game in Italy:lol:

Argentina - England was like that. Argentina were losing 1-0 but were still sat in right to the final whistle.

I think you’re misunderstanding my post. Just saying that reading that the Italian team was being cautious and playing for the result just felt oh so very familiar. Irrespectively of what others team do in this situation.

It's true of most of the teams, the European ones in particular. Spain pass, pass, pass - but could do with more goalscorers. England are learning to pass it out from the back. Germany win games, even when they're looking uninspired.

Inevitable really, coach training will be the same. Some of the coaches will the same. The younger European players may come from clubs like Barcelona that have the same coaching philosophy for all their teams, including the boys and girls youth teams. It's nice seeing the traditional national football stereotypes played out though.

At the start of the tournament, winning Group D seemed to open up a much easier path for England to progress to the later stages than finishing second. The picture seems a little murkier now.

Whilst the Group D runner up gets a much harder round of 16 game (Netherlands or Canada), if survived, potential QF & SF opponents seem less tough than they will likely be on the Group D winner's path.

There's a big disparity between the two halves of the draw now. Italy won the group so now they have Norway - England - USA/France as the route as it stands. If they'd finished 2nd they'd have got Germany but then had a much easier route to the final. Not sure if anyone will play for the easy half of the draw though, I personally would though.

Going to watch Scotland v Argentina, more to play for and results-wise so far they seem fairly evenly matched.

Think I've got this right:

Loser goes home

Argentina win and they progress

Draw and Scotland go home, Argentina probably too unless both New Zealand v Cameroon and Chile v Thailand are draws as well.

Scotland win and they at worst are the 5th best 3rd placed team moving above Nigeria, any draw in New Zealand v Cameroon or Chile v Thailand would then put them through. If teams win both those other games then it comes down to goal difference. Goals scored or fair play could even play a part.

Also the Argies were giving the ref loads of grief complete with hand gesticulations.
