Some quite harsh criticism on Young here. We need an upgrade yes but he’s having a good season.

I'm fine with giving Young a 1 year extension but I hate the old 'he's a great person to have in the dressing room' nonsense that gets wheeled out and repeated every time a player who isn't performing great on the pitch gets a new contract.

It's true for certain players though - In his case he is a very vocal and combative person, I doubt he's afraid to lay into some of the younger players if they slack off and if he helps keep standards high (whilst providing cover across a number of positions) then it's a solid contract extension.

Pretty indifferent news really.

I think we can all agree we need an upgrade at RB, someone like Meunier who can offer an immediate impact while leaving the door open for Dalot / Laird down the line.

I'm doubtful that this'll happen this summer though with CB, RW & CM seemingly lined up to strengthen.

Having said that I do like Young as a versatile backup, and buy into the 'good guy to have around the dressing room' shtick. Seems humble, dedicated - Very O'Shea-esque squad member for me, minus the nutmegs of course.

It'll do for now.

We definitely need specialists in the fullback positions, but this guy always gives 100% and doesn't go hiding when the chips are down. I'm ok with him getting another year.

Ok with an extension tbh, he can stay as cover, with Darmian gone. Just need to get a new first team fullback.

You think that Young is a positive influence because he is combative, but if you look in the thread about Mata you'll see people claiming he is a positive influence because he is so nice. And back when we kept Anderson around for all those years people used to claim he was a good player to have because he seemed fun and liked to joke around. Point is that it doesn't seem to matter what kind of personality a player has, people just always repeat the idea they are good for the dressing room despite that being pure speculation which no-one outside of the dressing room has the first clue about.

Besides which I don't even think think that Young's dressing room influence had any sort of meaningful impact on him being offer an extension. He's getting one because he's still performing to an adequate level and I think that would be the case regardless of whether he was shy or outgoing, combative or nice.

decent back up and our spending will be focused on other areas (CB, CM, RW) and contract renewals

fully expect Jones, Darmian, Rojo and Valencia to go so it really leaves us light at the back - Jones might survive

In fairness, also managers time to time praise the impact some players have in the dressing room. But I agree that you cannot pick someone just because they are nice (Like Ferguson did with Solskjær when he came back from his last injury - not really being good enough for the first team).

Don't see what's funny about that. Everyone knows Young is one of the stronger personalities in the dressing room, he's been here since Fergie, always gives his all, even after being moved to fullback.

Think it's the right decision to keep Young. We don't have the squad depth to get rid of him this year. We are probably going to be 'losing' Fellaini, Valencia, Darmian and Rojo and possibly Jones, Mata, Sanchez and Lukaku. Potentially 8 players, which would be a massive turnover.
Name me one thing that makes young a leader please.
Just one.

I don't see what gain there is to keep Young. He offers no leadership on the pitch, he is a liability in defense and his forward play isn't great. He is also approaching 34. Just sell him and scout for some new players.

Your the one spouting rubbish not me.
In what world is Ashley Young a leader?
People have different opinions. What a shocker. The only rubbish here is your attitude and your post. Have a good night.

Renewing contract is always cheaper than buying new one. Woodward win again

Why do you think he makes a good leader, because in my opinion, I genuinely don't see it on the pitch. Off the pitch, I think I've read that he decides some of the tunes in the dressing room or something along those lines. I would say at best he is well liked, but I don't think that justifies keeping him either. I also think we should not neglect the rise of Pogba and Lingard for off the pitch team morale. I suspect they are very popular players and probably the most influential.

“We’ve had some iconic captains here, all sorts of different types from Eric Cantona to Roy Keane,” Solskjær said. “The important thing is not to be afraid of standing in front of your teammates and putting them in their place if you have to. To be fair to Ash, he’s quite good at that. He’s maybe one of the last of the old-school ones, he sounds like Rio Ferdinand or Gary Neville.”

I understand those that want him out - we need a clear out of the old guard, but i understand why you give him one extra year - plays in both full back positions, good attitude, would be happy to be back up for both and woukd be happy with 10 or 15 games. Big clubs need players like him who have experience and are willing to sit around waiting for there chance. As long as the max we offer is 100k a week, good business for me.

Not too sure why so many harsh criticism on Young. He definitely ain't a top FB but at least offer us reliable backup options for both sides which is great to have. He will be the most senior player if Valencia left in the summer which I believe the club took into consideration. It is all about risk management.

Hopefully the club will look into signing a RB in the summer. Dalot doesn't seem to be ready yet and Young can't be relied on as starter.

At the moment, he is ahead of Dalot and Valencia for the RB role. Happy for him to extend another year. Dalot needs to learn from him and hopefully can push for starter role next season.

The rest will also need to learn from him how to last the whole 90 mins.

No point in letting him go now. He's probably a leader in the dressing room, he covers both full back positions which we have little depth in, especially considering Darmian will leave. He shouldn't be starting for us if we are to improve but he's fine enough. Average but that's fine.

Can someone please explain how this myth that Ashley Young is a great leader has come about? He walked into the captaincy due to simply being quite old and being at the club for a while. The only leadership I see from him on the pitch is when he moans at his teammates after one of his own mistakes.

Despite all that you see people claiming his leadership experience would be 'invaluable'. Where has that come from?

He's been the one left in charge of the music playlist before the matches so that must mean he's great captaincy material... or something?

He's a shit captain, not as shit as Valencia but not far off, but he's still worth an extra year, obviously provided it's more as a back up to whoever we end up signing at full back.

He screams at the others on football pitch, talks a big game on mic so he's become a 'leader' in eyes of many.

I don't mind the extension as long as it's for 1 year and he's strictly a squad player, we have far too much deadwood at the club and it's going to take time to clean it up.

We need 2 new fullbacks but we might as well give Young a one year extension. Don't really care if we do not and end up having to play a youngster instead. We can't go on without buying replacements for these guys forever.

I don't get the hate for him. No, he's not a great fullback, but we know he can do a job in both positions if necessary. If we buy someone in the summer and keep him as backup for one year, where's the harm in that? Better than buying a backup we'd be stuck with for years or be unable to sell.

It's horrible to see Young in next season, but I agreed with the opinion that Young was our best average fullback in this season.

I always liked that Fulltime devils channel. Never really cared about Stephen Howson, thought he was alright.

But dissing Ashley Young publicly as self declared "fans expert" is just a prick move really. No respect to Ashley Young whatsoever.

Hate that guy now.

Yeah. I think he's getting worse defensively but as 4th choice FB after Shaw, the new RB we need and Dalot, who I assume will pass him by the start of next season, I don't mind him being kept around for one more season. Then in 2020 we'll need to buy an LB to compete with or backup Shaw and we should finally have 2 decent fullbacks for each side if both moves come good.

Yeah, people discredit old guards in the team and forgot how many players in 30's Fergie had to deliver us success. We need Young next season.

Keeping him for 1 more year is good. We are likely clearing out Valencia and Damian so having Dalot/NewRB Shaw/Young would be good going into next season.

Taking the next corner instead of Jones!
This dude considers himself a professional...?
I know it's just bants, and I must say I have a lot of time for Statman Dave and quite like McKola and the all the radio dudes but Howson's really turned me off FTD altogether. Just can't listen any more. His agenda biased views on our experienced squad players like Mata and Young make me want to throw up! Knowing that a new generation of young, impressionable Manchester United fans, with their fingers on the pulse of social media networks, will be ready to re-tweet every word literally makes me worry for the future!

Great news, Ashley is a brilliant squad player who provides cover in 2 or 3 positions and is still clearly in great shape.

Feet up at home.
He's been decent for much of the season. Got no issues with him staying another year as backup.

Clearly we need better fullbacks if we want to win a league title. The issue I have is that come August Ashley Young will be starting at RB you can guarantee that
