Nothing wrong with a good fun action movie. Even Armageddon, which was possibly the most stupid of all those was still lots of fun.

Everything. I think you and Pauldyson ought to be locked in a different films thread.I watch it from time time. And Independence Day, what's not to like?
Boring. Everyone loves a good fun action movie from time to time, films such as Die Hard, T2, Running Man, Batman trilogy etc fit the bill. Whereas the likes of ID, Con Air et al make you question why you wasted 2 hours of your life. The problem is when you've seen it before...when it's the same template, it then falls well short of being fun and is more of a tedious waste of time.Nothing wrong with a good fun action movie. I guess they aren't as serious as Nausicaa with more added comic relief whilst Nausicaa goes hard with the environmental themes, something Miyazaki returned to later with Princess Mononoke, which for me is his biggest masterpiece. Anyway, they're all brilliant.Paprika if you love the idea of watching a David Lynch-like anime.
In what sense is it in line with SA? Fantasy/surrealism?
Not yet! I will draw up a list.Just one!
Have you watched "From Up on Poppy Hill"?
Laputa is nothing like SA in that sense. They're only really similar in that they're both chase movies with a skilfully created sense of peril throughout.Paprika if you love the idea of watching a David Lynch-like anime.

I think it comes down to preference, I love fantasy surrealism which is why SA is my favourite. I also think it's probably his best in terms of animation and character design. Maybe I've just got a screwed up mind that loves vivid dream-like sequences - Paprika, Miike and Lynch anyone?I guess they aren't as serious as Nausicaa with more added comic relief whilst Nausicaa goes hard with the environmental themes, something Miyazaki returned to later with Princess Mononoke, which for me is his biggest masterpiece. What's steam punk then?Laputa is nothing like SA in that sense. They're only really similar in that they're both chase movies with a skilfully created sense of peril throughout.
Laputa does have a fantastic steam punk vibe to it though. Not really surreal though.
The styling of the world and the technology. The characters and plot are all standard fantasy fare within that. What's steam punk then?
Victorian fantasy techWhat's steam punk then?
I agree with you there, have you watched Meteor made in 1979,I think it is good, I am a sucker for disaster films , I will always watch them.I quite liked Armageddon, because I was into Ben Affleck at the time. But if I ever watch it again, I'll use subtitles, because I found the sound awful and couldn't understand what they were saying a lot of the time.
Deep Impact was miles better.
Some films are just fun though - like Independence Day. It wouldn't win any awards but sometimes rubbish is entertaining.
Id quite happily be locked in a different films thread , I'm sure Paul wouldn't like to be thought of as a pretentious film fop eitherEverything. I think you and Pauldyson ought to be locked in a different films thread.

Wibbs, there's no way Red Steel can ever be fun.
Awww shucks.Id quite happily be locked in a different films thread , I'm sure Paul wouldn't like to be thought of as a pretentious film fop either
Oh god never.Id quite happily be locked in a different films thread , I'm sure Paul wouldn't like to be thought of as a pretentious film fop either
Angel's EggGot more movies along these lines? Have watched a lot of these movies, so would like a list if you wouldn't mind
I couldn't agree more . I like to be entertained and john Cusack films generally manage thatOh god never.
Not everybody likes what I do and if that did it would be boring.
There is no denying I like to watch some rubbish.
On the plus side Steve Buscemi was in it, I watched it with my kids last week (my eldest whose 7 loves anything to do with outer space etc), its fairly lame in all fairness. On the subject of Steve Buscemi I watched Ghostworld a few nights ago and really enjoyed it especially his performance.Nothing wrong with a good fun action movie. Even Armageddon, which was possibly the most stupid of all those was still lots of fun.
I'm easy to please on Friday night when I'm totally stuffed and ready to slump on the sofa with my brain off. That said since my son is a bit older we don't tend to watch films together and I haven't seen a Real Steel or Armageddon type film since.Boring. I think he is an excellent actor, I don't think I have seen him in anything I did not like.On the plus side Steve Buscemi was in it, I watched it with my kids last week (my eldest whose 7 loves anything to do with outer space etc), its fairly lame in all fairness. Cheers. I didn't go much into which studios made them since their animation offer plots that are varied and uninhibited. But the ones by Ghibli have a definite underlying relations which I like.Angel's Egg
Night on the Galactic Railroad
Memorizu
Perfect Blue
Mind Game
Tekkonkinkreet
Barefoot Gen
Neo Tokyo
5 Centimetres per Second,
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
Most of them aren't like Ghibli at all but are trippy as feck.
Agreed.Just watched Silver Linings Playbook. A solid and funny rom-com film no doubt, but how it get nominated for so many awards is beyond me. Must be a really bad year for the Oscars.
It should have been but somehow wasn't. Not an Oscar worthy film in a millions years mind.I thought it was the Crash of depression movies.
