Good performance. We attacked with a good purpose, kept the ball well and Herrera looked capable of picking a pass, which would be a really positive thing for us this season. But let's not get away from the fact that Galaxy were shite. The amount of time Herrera, for example, was getting to pick his passes won't be repeated in the PL. But pretty much every player looked like they knew what they were doing, which is already a massive improvement on last season. Overall a good start, albeit not much of a test.
One thing I did notice was the ease in which he escaped the tight situations he got in, such a brilliant first touch and decision making imo.

Instead of enjoying our performance I see lots of bashing Moyes posts. We have a new, thousand times better manager, Moyes isnt our manager anymore, leave him be. Its becoming a bit boring.

To anyone who managed to see the game: Where did Ashley Young play when he came on?! And did the formation stay the same (3-4-3) throughout the whole match?

Ashley Young had more or less a free role up front. He started top left, then switched to the center and right. He was all over the place (in a good way).

It's hard to tell what the formation was because of the 9 substitutions. The one noticeable thing was that Herrera was deployed in a number 10 role, which he excelled at.

Thanks for the feedback!

Was Herrera in a number 10 role in the first half? I would have assumed that was Mata there? Or just for the 2nd after Mata came off?

If the latter, I am pleased he played so well there, but I can't see him playing there much with Rooney and Mata about (Januzaj, Welbeck, Kagawa too)

Herrera played a central midfielder first half for a 3-4-1-2 type formation, mata in the hole. Second half he played more advanced then kagawa but it was more of a midfield trio then 1 specifically in the hole.

As for young, he played as 1 of the 2 strikers, along with nani, both given license to roam and change. First half the two were Rooney and welbeck. And yes, the 3-5-2 or 3-4-1-2 was pretty much the same throughout, just completely different team in the second half, but both played it perfectly.

I recall there was a time in the 2nd half when Herrera was surrounded by 4 players, and he somehow managed to get the ball out without losing possession. That really was something else, insane ball control.

It's funny that americans think soccer is good over there. I remember reading comments like "Don't underestimate us, Roby Keane is in great form and our team is compacted, athletic and has great shape".

People that go to the MLS are past there best and shine, hell they managed to make Ashley young look good, so much time on the ball, a truly woeful league. "soccer"

All 7 goals were scored by English players. When did that last happen?

We are finally seeing the benefits of having a central midfield player who can pass and run and dribble and stuff. Welcome to the 21st century, it's great here.

Also had to laugh at how bad American commentators are.

"When asked about what kind of player Van Gaal should sign next, the commentator says an out and out striker like Diego Costa."

"I wonder what the feeling in Manchester is right now"... I'm sure people are running in the the streets with joy after this preseason friendly victory at 6 am"

'We need that extra firepower''. While Man Utd was 5-0 up."

and then you have people actually trying to tell me that we were lucky and if the MLS were playing their full team it would be very close, do they realise we have just come off holiday with a team missing half of the players?

"God these friendlies are going to stall the growth of the MLS league and people will become fans of EPL teams instead. MLS teams can'r win when they bench their bench players to keep their starters rested because these matches happen in the middle of the season."

Steady down there. We're going to do better and put up a better fight and probably restore some of the "fear factor" as well as unbreak a bunch of records. But win the league? Ambitious right now, our squad still isn't a patch on Chelsea's, as horrible as it is to admit.

I think I'll have to watch the game again. Sober this time
It was great fun but embarrassing for the Galaxy. It was weird that they didn't start with their strongest team to keep it close in the 1st half.

No real need to bash American "soccer". Poor taste.

Does anyone know where to find stats for the game like possession and passes made etc?

Saw the highlights on youtube. Young's goal into the left corner was brilliant.
I personally preferred Rooney's masterpiece. Fooling the keeper into thinking he might actually not concede by allowing him to make the save, only to then pulverize his hopes by expertly putting the ball into the back of the net.

cherry picking. spurs drew against seattle and beat toronto with a late goal. mls is not the epl, no one is saying that.

Liverpool lost against a much worse team and last summer's preseason we were losing against Yokohama Marinos and drawing against a much lower level of opponents.

I missed the game and i've only been able to catch up on the goals, anyone fancy rounding up how the game went? Anyone play particularly well/bad? How did Shaw/Herrara get on? Was our football easy to watch?

i can´t understand fear from fans to admit that we are still no1 in England and the last season was a bad night mare,so stand up and say it loudly that we are one of the favourites in EPL.

thats my attitude an nothing(except moyes) cant change that,LVG is truly winner and he will prove us that

Sorry for my ignorance but who is Reece James and what position does he play? :D
Mainly LB or CM. Think he may have played left wing and right back on the odd occasion although my mind may just be playing tricks. I really like him. Glad to hear he did well when he got his chance yesterday. Assume he played 2nd half in place of Shaw?

Although i agree with your overall sentiment, I think it's only natural how some fans feel it necessary to bring up bad memories, whereby the club went through the most nightmarish 10 months which shocked the world leading some fans to believe that our team was rubbish. Fast forward 13 months, we played like we had not had those 10 months because it appears we are on our way to be back in business. Fair to draw comparison from time to time to prove a point: great managers bring the best out of players.

Not sure about that. I think Chelsea are still quite weak up top if Lukaku goes. Torres is their only backup striker (plus Schurrle I suppose) and I'm not quite sure what to make of Costa myself. I'm sure Mourinho is the manager to get the best out of him but I'm not sure how talented he actually is.

Just watched the game.

Can't really ask for much more than that can we? Herrera was fantastic though I can't help but feel maybe that was just a normal CM performance and we've just been so accustomed to crap ones that it looked brilliant!

Fletcher was good too and I get a lovely little tingle inside seeing him with the armband.

Shaw was clearly a bit nervous but that's fine.

Few worries about us going 3-4-3 but I'll save them for later.
haha - no man it was good. You can tell by looking at other top teams when they played us ;)

Well, I fell asleep, just got round to watching the full match replay after getting off work.

Herrera was sublime, unbelievable.

Also refreshing to see every player, 'played' well, usually somebody out there has a shocker, but everybody played their role.

Unfortunately with Ashley Young getting 2 goals, he will once again start to deceive people of his abilities and most likely remain here.

I've been steering clear all day, and just watched the game. Got really excited by what I saw. I mean, even Young played well. Ander Herrera though, he had a really good game, I hope he is planning on playing like that all season long. Connected well with Mata too.

And Reece James obviously wants to be second choice LB for the season. We should watch how he does in the remaining friendlies, but if he keeps on impressing, we could well take a chance on him. He was quite good consistently when he played for the U21s last season, and if we need to play somebody other than Shaw or James at LB, we have Evans who can do an OK job there for a game or two. With the 3-5-2 system, we could probably use one of the wingers at LWB.

Side note: I think the score prediction thing needs to go higher than 5.

That was the best mls defence we played against. 16 goals conceded in 17 matches, and we put 7 past them in 1 game, very impressive even if it's just the mls

Probably says more about the MLS than our attack, if we're honest. Two of the goals in the first half came from their mistakes, but they were scored against a defence that looked reasonably tricky to break down, so all credit to us there.

But in the second half they truly fell to pieces, offering little to no resistance by the end. When Ashley Young is scoring at will...
