Only Inter looks like a proper threat besides Napoli and Roma? Give me a break. We would struggle to beat Sevilla, Wolfsburg, Napoli and Roma over two legs and teams like Olympiakos, Zenit, Salzburg, Inter would definitely be very hard to beat too. We've improved a lot since we last played in Europe but we still have to wait and see if our new system is effective against continental teams. It depends massively on the form at the moment the games are played, but I'd say we're not in the top five favourites to win the EL.
The likes of Sevilla and Wolfsburg would find it way harder to beat us than we would find it to beat them.

Chucking in the likes of Olympiakos and Salzburg is just playing up the trope of how there are never easy games and how even the best team is not assured of winning.

We are third favourites. You are plain wrong about our chances.

Have you forgotten how easily teams dealt with Liverpool in the CL? Giants such as that Bulgarian team?

300million spent to get back in since summer 2010 and you are miles behind Rafas era.

We really, really are not. If you think we would be favourites against Wolfsburg over two legs at the moment, you're the one who is plain wrong. Sure, we have a chance because you always have a chance in knock-out games but they are just a better team than us right now. We've been improving over the course of the last month or so but those performances include games against Villa who hadn't scored for six games, a Championship side and a struggling West Ham. When it really mattered against Chelsea, we didn't deliver. Yeah sure, we played well and all that, but we got knocked out nevertheless. I think you're underestimating Besiktas and all the other clubs left in the EL.

I'd put us third favourites behind Roma and Wolfsburg, but that obviously is dependent on us taking the competition seriously. You might put Napoli ahead of us too, but that's about it.

Oh great. Looks like Liverpool have the best team in the world again.

The boom bust cycle this year has a double hump.

What an absurdly negative spin on Liverpool's recent run of form. Liverpool are top of the form table because they're looking solid and dangerous. It may not he enough to win the EL but come on, they should be beating most.

Liverpool have no chance in the EL. Too easy for European teams to deal with their kick and rush PL style.

They struggled against a Bulgarian team who cost less to assemble than Ricky Lambert.
Comparisons with the Liverpool of autumn to now are pretty pointless.

Also, kick and rush?

Everton beat them 4-1 and 2-0 in the group stage.
Only team to get a win at Wolfsburg this season iirc, and they didn't look as good a team back then as they do right now. Like I said, form of the team is very important in the EL because so many teams are (more or less) equally strong and capable of beating each other on their day.

It might sound negative but that's not my intention. I'm loving our recent resurgence as much as the next guy, but the EL is a strange thing. I'm inclined to agree we look like one of the favourites on paper but that's just not how it works. Who'd expect Basel to beat Tottenham in the semis last year for example? There are so many tricky obstacles to overcome and you need a bit of luck now and then. I definitely stand by my view that we have a much, much bigger chance to win the FA Cup than the Europa League.

I agree we have a better chance to win the FA cup, but I'd still make us third or fourth favourites for the Europa league.

Liverpool will lose to Palace (as always) in the next round and I honestly can't see them getting far in the EL. They are on good form and have done well to bounce back from how shite they were playing at the start of the season up until around December but I feel most of the scousers are over estimating Liverpool again. They have some tough fixtures coming up so we'll see.

Well as long as Caf fans are underestimating Liverpool it should be fine. I remember similar posts this time last year...

Yea back when you where 4th and 8 points off the lead.
Your 7th and 15 points as we speak, context.
Similar season to all your others barring the blip last year.

Context indeed...the discussion is framed around the likelihood of 4th this season rather than the league. So it is very similar to last season...relatively speaking.

It's ridiculous that you're in a position that 2 of your 3 best players are at the situation where they could not sign contracts and feck off in 18 months. And I thought our DDG situation was bad...

3rd favorites maybe, but it's probably still like a 15 percent chance, with 6 other strong teams around 10-20% each and lots of meh ones filling it out.

Wolsburg and Sevilla looked phenomenal and decent, respectively, playing on the break against Munich and Madrid this past week, so not sure how much you being "better" will matter.

The point is, that is still a great chance that you should pursue. Thinking that our chances are so slim we might as well pack it in and focus on the league is just wrong.

There's absolutely no doubt they've improved a lot recently. They've gone from looking capable of losing to any side to looking capable of beating any side. However, their run of fixtures is about to get a lot tougher, as pexbo pointed out a few pages back.

If they're still in touching distance of us by March I'll be very worried.

That was a disgrace. Mignolet, Can, Skrtel and Ibe only people to come out with any credit and I include Rodgers in that. They were there for the taking.

I would say mentioning them players would even be a bit of a stretch. Can done some good things but then put you guys under pressure at other times needlessly. He is starting to look very assured in that position though I must say. Ibe started well but faded in the second half. A draw was definitely the right result.
